Starting new thread before we run out of room. Now to link from the old one. Could be interesting

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
LaDiDaDi · 29/04/2010 09:58

Sorry I haven't been on this thread for ages. Aren't all of the babies getting grown up; food, nursery, rolling over!

Had a horrid day with ds on Tuesday, went to the shops as PIL were picking dd up from nursery for the afternoon but he just cried to be fed constantly, it seemed like I couldn't fill him! Even after a 50 minute feed where he was all sleepy afterwards he woke again within minutes demanding more. He's always fed really frequently but I was seriously thinking that I couldn't go on on Tuesday. Yesterday he seemed better but I am still finding it hard going. Dreaming of 2 hourly feeds in the day!

Hi - just back from the HV - asked about the Bookstart pack, apparently she would normally give it out at 7 months but as I mentioned it she gave me ours - didn't seem to mind. So a new read at bedtime tonight - so am all excited about that!

DD today weighs 15 pounds 15 ounces and is 61.5 cms. So that's up 2 cms and 2 pounds 2 ounces in 6 weeks since I last got her weighed! She's now on the cusp of the 75 centile. Am sure her growth will even out once she gets on the move and gets burning those calories - I know she was little when born (5.10ozs) but even so, that sounds quite dramatic... hope it's ok - the HV didn't say anything.

GS - I really hope the jabs were ok today for you. You're right - no more jabs for ages now!

AmazingBouncingFerret · 29/04/2010 16:12

Went to the weaning meeting thing at the early years centre that I was invited to. It didnt really tell me anything I didnt know and I was pleased that they were really stressing the waiting till 6 months unless on advice of HV.
Got some great recipe ideas for different mash-ups.
Only downside they made us taste test jar foods. It was disgusting!
Heinz banana delight has only 16% banana in it! Can you believe it??
Am really looking forward to weaning now and having her sat at the table with us.

GoldenSnitch · 29/04/2010 16:51

Catherine's jabs went well. She didn't cry at all when the first one went in but screamed for the second (nurse did say that one stings though) and the third wasn't much worse. She stopped crying quite quickly though and was even smiling at the nurse before we left.

There was a little girl in the waiting room afterwards though that asked what the thing on it's head was!!

Mother was suitably embarrassed and told the girl that 'it' was a little girl and she should say 'she' and I calmly explained that Catherine's mark was a birth mark and would fade and be hidden by her hair soon. There was even another Mum there who's little girl had a strawberry mark in almost exactly the same place. Made me a bit sad though as she sounded so repulsed as she said it

Counting my blessings though that a silly strawberry mark is the only thing 'wrong' with Catherine. It could be so, so much worse and she is still totally beautiful to me. I tell DS that her birth/beauty mark is so big because she is extra beautiful

Klerka · 29/04/2010 17:16

GS - Glad the jabs went ok for you both. Sorry about the comments by the little girl - I suppose she didn't know any better and I am glad you and her Mum seemed to deal with explaining to her well.

Holly has three strawberry birthmarks. Two tiny ones on her leg and chest. The biggest is on her neck and about the size of a fifty pence piece. (you can't see it all the time as it's hidden by chins . People have asked about it to whom I explain but I haven't had any less than polite questions or had to deal with a child asking like that. Sorry you did ... Interestingly, I read some interesting things about the marks about smaller babies and the placenta being an possible reason.

I am with you on the beauty part... I call them her special strawberry kisses.

GoldenSnitch · 29/04/2010 17:47

Catherine's is a bit bigger than a 5 pence piece but it's just inside her hairline right on the top of her head so it's really obvious.

There are pics on my profile if you'd like to see.

Apparently they're most common on Caucasian girls and something like 90% are gone by age 10

Klerka · 29/04/2010 17:59

You can just see Holly's on the photo of her in her nappy on my profile too.

I read that they are more common in low birth weight babies and some studies link them to a piece of placenta imbedding in the skin (probably more technically written than that!). Also all I have read leads me to believe that they will shrink and disappear by age 5ish. For now we also have to be careful that they don't catch them as they would bleed.

GoldenSnitch · 29/04/2010 18:06

Ah yes. She's such a cutie You'd have to know it was there to notice. At least while she's tiny and many chinned

Catherine was 7lbs 1oz at 38+4 so she wasn't really low birth weight. She is tiny now though. It wasn't there when she was born either. Started as a tiny pink blob at day 2, I thought I'd caught her with a nail or something, but then it grew.

Klerka · 29/04/2010 18:16

Awww she's beautiful too. It's a very neat mark! Holly's is a weird shape, keep wondering what country it looks like!

I hope you have a good night - we're off for a bath now, some naked time and a look through our new books. Did you all get your BookStart books yet?

AmazingBouncingFerret · 29/04/2010 19:46

Snitch your DD is beautiful.
The strawberry marks are very common in little babys, I see them all the time on little ones at work. Have never seen one on an older child though.

sparklycheerymummy · 29/04/2010 20:09

dd and ds have them in the nape of their neck..... sort of splodgy ones. can't see dds as she has long hair..... will prob be abe to see dss as he will prob have short hair but who cares.....xx

GoldenSnitch · 29/04/2010 20:24

Which bookstart pack is it Klerka? We've had the one in the fabric shopping bag, got that at the 6 week check. I thought the next one was the one in the book bag at the 2 year check?

Catherine went straight down for her sleep tonight so maybe she'll sleep through. Jabs have just left her a bit clingy, she doesn't seem poorly. I was just glad she went to sleep without a fight tbh, she really fought it yesterday and we ended up with hours of screaming at bedtime. Shes always been so good at bedtime and I was worried we'd reached a new phase.

DH got his new car today and has just taken it down to show his parents It's a Passat and they have a 7 year old Passat so he's gone to show off. It has an automatic handbrake! - so that's me breaking my nails as I go for a handbrake that's not there! and no key! You shove the whole keyfob thing in a hole in the dashboard while pressing the clutch!!

I'm never going to be able to crash it cause I'll never be able to get it off the drive!

Klerka · 29/04/2010 20:57

Oh - well old news then . My best friend said that she got her Bookstart pack whilst still in the hospital and when we didn't I wondered. So when I asked the HV today about it and she said she normally gives it out at 7 months, I did think and looking at it earlier, I obviously have only now received the new born pack with the cloth bag and 'Look - There's a Baby', and 'Where, oh where is Baby Bear'. We are still very happy with it though.

GS - Your DH's car sounds right snazzy! Am glad Catherine went off to sleep ok - bet she'll be right as rain in the morning.

GoldenSnitch · 29/04/2010 21:45

Our bookstart bag had "Lullaby Lion" and another book I've forgotten the name of. I think they vary from year to year and place to place. Definitely a different set of books to the ones DS got.

On her home visit our HV saw the shelf full of books in the lounge and was asking me about my education level. Apparently, as I have a degree, she'll be expecting DS and Catherine to be quite bright and will make sure she acts swiftly if they seem to be falling behind. No pressure there then!!

The new car is a company car so it's even better for not having cost us anymore than we were paying for the old one. We're lucky that DH's work give him free fuel and also allow unlimited personal miles so his cars get flogged as he has an hours drive either way to work every day and we use them for visiting my family which is a three hour drive away. It's huge though, I'm quite scared of attempting to drive it.

GoldenSnitch · 30/04/2010 07:23

Well I hate jabs but loved the effect they had last night. Catherine went to bed with no arguments at 7.30 last night, I woke at 2am with the 'she hasn't woken me for a feed' panic, she winged a little at 3am so I brought her into our bed for a feed but she fell almost immediately back to sleep and then she got up at 7am this morning!! Pity DS got me up at twenty past 6.

Still, that's the best nights sleep I've had in ages

Klerka · 30/04/2010 09:57

Glad you got a good night GS!

We did too somehow - DD went down a little fussy at 7.30 - then I woke with the same panic as you did at 4am! She was fine - stirred a bit at 5.30 so I fed her a tiny amount, she fell asleep in my arms so I put her down and she woke at... 8am!! WOW - I feel like a new woman.

GoldenSnitch · 30/04/2010 10:01

When did those twitter and facebook buttons appear?

AmazingBouncingFerret · 30/04/2010 10:06

Heh wonder what my HV thought when she saw the shelves of MCSE, sharepoint and server books at my place!! "You must get that child on a computer at once..." lol

Baby free day today. Dont know what to do with myself!

Had to have words with DS's teacher at nursery yesterday. He didnt want to go because another boy has been mean to him and made him sad (his words not mine)
She was really pleased I mentioned it though she's going to get Jake to point out the boy and she's going to have a little chat about being nice to others etc. Was really chuffed with how she handled it.

GoldenSnitch · 30/04/2010 10:21

Maybe she asked about my education level because all the books in our lounge are children's ones.

All my degree texts are in the loft. Not much call for Ergonomics or materials engineering as a SAHM

DS has him own log on on our computer. We bought some software called Kidesktop which makes it all super simple and can be locked down so that he can only access pages we allow. It can be a bit annoying at first as it won't even let you go to other pages on a website unless they've been allowed. It took a few weeks of finding that we couldn't watch the videos or print anything from Cbeebies unless we went back to the parent screen and allowed them but it's sorted now and DS loves it.

Glad your nursery was so good about the bullying ABF. That must be very reassuring.

I'd kill for a baby free day! We're off to soft play which will be no where near as relaxing. Very

Klerka · 30/04/2010 10:23

I noticed those buttons this morning but was worried they had been there for a few days so didn't like to mention it!

Really glad the teacher dealt with it well ABF... that's really important. I can't imagine how your heart felt when he said that somebody made him sad . I'm a very protective person at the best of times... let alone with DD - it's something else entirely!

We must be raising the next Escoffier at our house then with all my DH's chef books. Maybe I should wean her with foams, glazes, souffles and the like.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 30/04/2010 11:26

Oh no, I only have a paltry few childrens books in the living room, mainly the peekaboo type ones and touchy feely things. She must think im a heathen!!
All his story books are in his bedroom within easy reach for his bedtime story.

Yes hopefully nursery today will be happier.

Claire236 · 30/04/2010 13:04

Not sure I want to inflict my CIMA books on my poor children. A chef in the house would be much better than another accountant.

Glad you both had good nights GS & Klerka. ds2 was late going to sleep last night because ds1 kept getting out of bed with loads of rubbish excuses & disturbing him.

No idea when the Twitter & Facebook buttons appeared. Could have been weeks ago for all I know.

OP posts:
LaDiDaDi · 30/04/2010 13:21

Pleased that you had a good night's sleep GS. DS woke up twice again but he had a relatively short night for him (9pm-7am) so he had a nice nap whilst I was at the shops this morning!

I don't have the time or concentration to twitter and facebook and mumsnet so I doubt that I'll be using the new buttons.

We have no books downstairs now, apart from the one currently being read, as I moved the bookcases upstairs to accommodate the Xmas tree and I -can't- -be- -arsed- -to- -move- -them- -back- have dicided that they are better in the spare room.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 30/04/2010 15:38

I have my wall of bookcases which im very proud of. All thanks to good ol Billy from Ikea.

Twitter and facebook happened sometime this morning im thinking about 10ish because when I tried to post a comment round about then MN went all weird and when I refreshed they suddenly appeared!

Jake had a better day today at nursery so hopefully the nasty behaviour from the other boy was a one off.

Elizabeth has slept through 3 nights running.
But shhh I didnt tell you because I dont want to jinx it!

GoldenSnitch · 30/04/2010 15:47

"Maybe she asked about my education level because all the books in our lounge are children's ones." I wondered whether she thought that was my reading level

We have 1 shelf-full. Like you ABF, it's all the simple board books or the ones with magnets or the ones with the exciting stories that aren't suitable for bedtimes.

All the bedtime type stories are in DS's room.

We have tonnes of books though as I love them and my sister works for Waterstones. All my books have been relegated to boxes in the loft or garage. One day I'm going to have a house with a study/library

Catherine's definitely a bit grotty today after the jabs and she felt really hot earlier. I must remember to get some of those Calpol sachets as we were at softplay when she got hot and I had nothing. DS has run himself ragged there so I'm hoping for a quiet afternoon so she can get some rest.
