I'm sorry - I couldn't last out. Welcome to the new thread.

no heat here - I am off to devon for a week - and it looks like rain...bring it on I say...

see you in a week (hopefully)

buzzybee · 22/08/2009 11:39

Arcadie - not sure what to say about your friend. So so unfair. I'm not normally a worrier but the thought of leaving my DC does occasionally give me sleepless nights

Great news about your scan though. You too DrSkid!

Clara - great to hear you've landed safely (so to speak) in the Carib. Not hot here either but we have had one of the best Augusts ever - clear sunny days with little wind and temp around 12-14 degrees (sometimes up to 18), which considering Aug is usually the worst winter month is amazing. To make up for the sh*t May and June we had though! Only 2 weeks to go now until we go to Queensland for a week in the warmer sun there, can't wait!

Devon sounds lovely though cazzy, I really enjoyed exploring down there when we lived in London.

SQ, I agree with DrSkid - I would start toilet training now if DD had better language. She is currently quite interested in the potty (sits on it with her nappy on) but I think you really need to have enough language to at least have a conversation about sitting on the loo without a nappy etc and maybe also some concept of rewards for success (I used a jellybean for DD1 but she was almost 3 before I tried!)

I have taken delivery of my new car and its great not to worry about the next thing that might go wrong (with the old one). Also enjoying having 4 doors for the first time in 10 years - missing the big boot though!

I hope you're all well. Fingers crossed we seem to have survived winter without contracting swine flu - and in fact its not really in the news much any more so I presume its on the decline here. The last few weeks of fine weather should have helped.

Arcadie · 22/08/2009 12:39

Weird... it's winter down there..... Never was much cop at Geography!

Clairey - ha ha at your dc's playing in the dirt with a stick. My two spend half the day getting in and out of a cupboard. It's amazing what they will find to do with themselves when their normal amusements are not available. Unfortunately I think they are a little spoiled as I did tend to take them out a lot when we were at home - as much for my sanity as theirs. Also, I really really miss having Sky +, Playhouse Disney, Cbeebies etc. We do have dvd's but they can only watch them either on the laptop or our portable dvd player and they just end up fighting over it!!

Potty training: dd2 is showing a lot of interest and yesterday told me she was about to do a poo and then promptly did a pee in the bath, so I guess she is getting there. Unfortunately her potty is in our air freight which is yet to be delivered. But once we have it we can at least try sitting her on it. I am not going to start formal potty training for a while yet.

Although I don't want any more children I am very of you ladies with your new bumps. However I still can't understand how you can face all those sleepless nights, sore nipples, colic, 3,000 nappy changes a day etc

claraquack · 22/08/2009 18:36

PS I haven't seen so much rain in a long time!

claireybee · 24/08/2009 11:32

ds has pulled half the keysoff my laptop typing is difficult...

Arcadie · 24/08/2009 14:38

Grumble Clairey.... meant to ask - How's DH?

OP posts:
claireybee · 24/08/2009 17:10

Hi arcadie, things aren't too bad thanks. Better than they were anyway.

Are you feeling pregnant yet//

DS has just learnt to do forward rolls, is very proud of himself.

Have come online to try and get recipe ideas, feel like I'm stuck in a cooking rut atm. We only have £40 per week groceries at the moment too so that doesn't help, it's lentils and pulses all the way!

Arcadie · 24/08/2009 19:17

Hi Clairey - glad to hear it. DS being the one born in Dec 07. Can do somersaults?

And no, don't feel pregnant. But that's a good thing. I don't feel very nice when I'm very pregnant.

claireybee · 25/08/2009 11:01

What no MS or anything? Lucky!

Anyone else at the screaming in rage and frustration everytime they can't do something/reach something/someone else has something they want stage? The toddlers that is not the mums! I am usually fairly patient when it comes to children but the minute I hear that scream I want to throw things! Can't remember how long it lasted with dd but I can't wait til ds stops it.

suey2 · 25/08/2009 15:30

hello all,
have been away on hols; just back this week; have been lurking.......
very of you pregnant ladies. I have been off the pill since april and no sign yet, although since i am so irregular I cannot plan and frankly DH has been working so hard that it would be a bloody miracle! I am also trying to be positive and make do with what i have in case i am not successful- 40 next year and the old eggs must be drying up. 2 of my NCT lot are PG and I am glad i'm not yet in some ways: both of my physio staff are leaving and ideally i would like to have everything stable at work before I fall PG.

Clairey - millie has just figured out a forward roll, too- and isnt she pleased every time! Except when she rolled off the side of the bed on holiday....

Sorry to hear about your pal, arcadie. It puts everything into perspective, eh?

I second the DVD player joy- and Milllie has got used to earphones so I don't have to listen to it- i have grown a very limited tolerance for Dora in particular! The other item which has been a godsend is the ipod touch. I am slightly embarassed to admit that i got one for her after she repeatedly used my i-phone and kept making calls by accident. I have downloaded a whole load of preschool programmes on there as well as some tv programmes. Very useful for long haul travel and if i'm out for lunch.

suey2 · 25/08/2009 15:33

oh- and i had to take the sides of the cot off since M can now climb out of the cot. Not a lot of sleep since, so have just put up one of those side things from mothercare.
Poor wee thing- gets pretty distressed when she falls out of bed! she eventually fell asleep on the floor last night at one point

claireybee · 26/08/2009 14:50

Hi Suey good to hear from you

The forward rolls are funny aren't they, ds still looks mildly surprised then beams with pride every time!

LOL at Millie having her own Ipod touch

Arcadie · 27/08/2009 13:00

Morning all

Just told DS ( 3 1/2) about baby. General interest as long as it's a brother.

DD ... is trying to snort snot out of her nose onto a library book. Don't think she's quite understood the enormity of the situation.

OP posts:
becklespeckle · 27/08/2009 15:06

Arcadie - at your DC's reaction to new sibling news! Sorry to hear about your friend though, it is heartbreaking to think of her poor DH and children, one of my biggest fears is leaving mine .

Clara, glad to hear you are safely abroad! DD also stood up in the bath the other day and announced she needed a wee, then did one - DH says he's never seen the boys move so fast (as they jumped out the bath so as not to be infected with 'girl wee')! She will often tell me before she does a poo and always afterwards. I still have absolutely no intention of starting her potty training yet though, I'm far too lazy to be bothered with the hit and miss of it all at this age. I'll start her in the spring I think, it was a good age for DS2 and he grasped it all very quickly so fingers crossed...

DrSkid at scan! Ouch at your friend's uniform fees though - I think I probably kitted both boys out (including the sodding stationery) for less than that (and I thought ours was steep!).

SQ, lovely pics of your hols, your DD is very beautiful and I'll agree with the others that she looks much older than she is, I think its all her hair that does it!

Cazzy, hope you are having a lovely time in Devon (although I may be behind enough that you are back now ). Sorry to hear of your Uncle, cancer is such a nasty disease, its how I lost my Mum and I know so many people who are/have been fighting it.

Buzzy, for the new car! You'll soon get used to having less boot space, it sounds like everything else makes up for that though! I'm glad to hear that the swine flu has not been too bad your way, perhaps that gives us hope here. I am terrified a little worried about the children going back to school next week as 'they' seem to think the number of cases will significantly rise and we'll get the dreaded 'second wave' - arghhhhhh! I am a bit of a worrier...

Clairey, I'm glad things are a bit better for you at home, it must be very hard for you. I hope things continue to improve. I am very impressed at DS's forward rolls! Evie has just mastered jumping with both feet so I'm hoping it'll be a while before she moves onto gymnastics - she's too much of a daredevil as it is - no fear! Thankfully she doesn't scream too often when frustrated, she can usually climb or bash things until she gets what she wants anyway - she's a sturdy little thing!

Suey, congrats on your DD's forward rolling too! She'll soon settle into her bed, I remember when DS1 went into a bed I ended up putting the chest of drawers to the side of it at the bottom and a bed rail at the top so he felt secure and couldn't roll out - made my nights a lot less disturbed! I need to get a rail for DD's bed although she is still happy in her cot - I asked her if she wanted to sleep in her bed the other night and she said "no, cot!". As for falling pg, I think sometimes our bodies know when we are ready for it (even if we want it sooner!), I am also very irregular but when I do fall pg it tends to be at times when everything is running smoothly in the rest of my life. I'm sure it'll happen for you once everything else is in place. (oh and at DD having her own ipod touch!)

Well I now have 3 ex-battery hens living in my garden They are fantastic and the children love them, I haven't let them out the run yet though so it'll be funny to see how DD reacts to them when they're wandering about! We have been lucky with eggs so far too, they've laid 9 since Sunday when we brought them home! We weren't expecting any for a few weeks due to the shock of rescue, the boys love fetching the still-warm eggs

Doctorskidaddle · 28/08/2009 14:42

hi everyone, especially suey!

Just posting quickly so I know where I am - back soon to catch up. Hope everyone's fine

PS Just been away for three nights and DS did a poo in the bath every night (has never done it before) - do you think it was because he was missing me? DH said he has never seen DD jump so fast

buzzybee · 29/08/2009 10:33

Beckle, you are the queen of long posts! How long did that take to compose?

Hi Suey, I'm in complete agreement with Beckle - both times I've got pregnant its been when I'm in a very calm space mentally and fit(ish) physically. Good luck!

Arcadie - well its Spring now really, or at least we are all hoping it continues to stay this warm and doesn't hit us with a final dose of winter. We had a real jolt of an earthquake on Thur night, very close to Wellington so we really felt it. It was at 2am and I didn't get back to sleep again until 5am so was rather shattered at work on Friday.

DD2 has only done a poo in the bath once and like you say DD1 was out of there like a shot! (not that I blame her really)

I've just ordered a bed for DD2, should be here in about 4-5 weeks. My neighbour is due a baby very soon so have offered her the cot, so will be no going back.

Have just had a fab time dancing around the living room with DD2 to Mamma Mia - she is such a show-off and tries to copy all the moves Hopefully she'll sleep really well tonight and even give me a wee lie-in. We've had a busy day going to a friend's 1yo birthday party.

BouncingTurtle · 29/08/2009 14:46

Hey all, been at the inlaws caravan in the Yorkshire Dales, had a great day on the Tuesday, down at Blackpool, DS kept walking on to the glass panel in the Tower, the 'walk of faith' and chuckling at all the people staring at him aghast lol.
Unfortunately I managed to sprain my back!!

Saw some sad news on FB, I think it maybe fifisboys, who has just had a m/c. Poor thing, hope she is ok

Arcadie · 29/08/2009 15:49

Hey, Fifisboys if you're lurking. So sorry to hear that and hope you've got a lovely Antenatal group and a supportive TTC thread to help you along. Very sad for you.

OP posts:
Arcadie · 30/08/2009 09:00

OK Having stopped the thread in its tracks....

DD has croup. I know this because she sounds like she's on 50 a day and barks like a seal rather than coughing. Poor little badger. It got so bad that I phoned NHS direction last night at 11. 2 hours later and we'd chatted to some lovely nurse and fab on call doctor, had sat in a steamy bathroom for 20 minutes and then sat outdoors for 5 minutes at midnight..... DH was on call last night til about 3:30 so is sleeping it off this morning. I feel a little as though a train just hit me because DS and DD proceeded to wake up a couple more times in tag team for the rest of the night and DD thought that 7 was an ok wake up despite having lost 2 hours of sleep.......

Any other suggestion for soothing croup?

OP posts:
buzzybee · 30/08/2009 11:22

No real suggestions Arcadie, just sympathy. DD2 hasn't had croup but did make a couple of trips across town to after hours with DD1 late at night, not fun. Only thing I can say is that both times by the time we arrived it had subsided quite substantially - seems the cold air does help quite a bit. So, maybe a drive around the neighbourhood for 20 mins?

suey2 · 31/08/2009 21:09

No suggestions for croup I'm afraid.
DD has nits. Hundreds. Well, hopefully not any more. Lots of conditioner and combing later..... Fingers crossed.
LOL dh seems to think he has caught it all over: is particularly paranoid about ahem down there!

claireybee · 01/09/2009 21:38

Poor fifi

Lots of sad news around at the moment it seems.

Eek at nits suey, I am TERRIFIED of dd getting them-can't even get a normal comb through her hair let alone a nit comb. DS not so bad, he has a lot less hair and it's finer. She starts preschool next week though so it's bound to happen soon.

No experience of croup arcadie, hope she is better soon

Doctorskidaddle · 02/09/2009 09:31

arcadie - if it's not too late, run a hot bath, close windows and door and the steam is supposed to be really good for croup. DD had it a couple of times and this really seemed to help. It is awful though, you poor thing on top of being pg as well

BT - I saw that about fifi too really sorry fifi if you're lurking

clairey - DD is starting preschool next week too - am feeling slightly nervous about it - are you? Especially as you have had her with you all the time until now. I'm sure they will both be fine, can;t believe this time next year they'll be at school, our little babies....

suey - eek I am also paranoid about nits but neither of mine have had them yet. LOL at your DH though - I'm sure he will be safe unless he's been wandering around with no pants on close to DD's head!!

claireybee · 02/09/2009 10:47

Skid I didn't realise our dd's were the same school year, thought your dd was a year ahead because she seems so much older! I'm feeling ok about her going, she is really looking forward to it which helps. The bit I am dreading is dh is insisting on coming with us on her first day and I just think it is the wrong thing to do for so many reasons...

  1. It will make it an issue out of it
  2. DD will want to stay home with daddy 3)It's not how we've talked about it happening
  3. DD will think me ds and dh are going to do something exciting without her 5)He is likely to do his show offey look how clever dd is and what a great dad I am thing which will make me want to run and hide and never face her teachers again

etc etc

Am glad you said that about sueys dh, I thought it but didn't want to say it
