Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
evie2000 · 02/10/2008 12:01

my dh is always kindly suggesting I record things but then when I haven't watched them immediately he has a massive culling session saying well you'll never watch that delete...arghghgh I think men and sky plus is just an extension of remote heaven for them! He seems surprised that I haven't had timne to sit and watch tv whilst he's out at work!
Hope you're recovering -how is the friend in labour?!!

fitnfortyone · 02/10/2008 14:00

completely the opposite in this household, most of our unwatched stuff is my DH's or things we both want to watch so I have to wait until he's free to clear it from the planner. Mind you, I did install a larger hard drive to cope with all the cr@p we (erm, I)watch.

LO has picked up his first bug, at the tail end of his first cold. So now we have the cold back again, lots of snot, a bit of vomit overnight and lots of nappy changing. I particularly liked this mornings which went out the nappy, down his leg and all over me. He's generously given it to me as well, so it was all I could to to stop throwing up at that point. DH managed to sleep through most of it of course.
Had a lie in then MIL phoned and woke me up, followed shortly after I'd got back to sleep by my dad wanting to know what to do with his Trojan

Ewe · 02/10/2008 23:38

Arrrghhh, DD has had this awful cold for SIX weeks, yes SIX! Every single night she wakes about every 15mins in a coughing fit. We have tried - humidfier, saline nose drops, snot sucker, karvol capsules, olbas oil, vicks, medised, calpol, tilting her mattress... Anything I've missed? I'm really struggling with the no sleep + full time job combo!!!

Oh and I weighed the little madam yesterday as I haven't been to the health visitor in months (bad mummy) and I have realised she is only on the second centile. This is for both height and weight so I'm guessing she is just petite but for reassurance can you all tell me what your LO's weigh? I think I will probably take her to HV next week but as anyone who is on my FB can see she is a little chubster really. She eats really well and is FF so I know she is taking on enough.

Haven't had much of a chance to catch up with everyone... WBPA, hope you are continuing to recover well, lots of positive vibes heading your way - as ever! Shhhh to whoever mentioned the clocks, nooooo, I hate it when the clocks go back.

My SIL's waters broke Wed at 2:30am so she is currently in hospital being pessaried etc and starting proper induction tomorrow, really hope hers is better than my awful induction! Sad that DD isn't going to be the baby of the family any longer though

iwantasecondone · 03/10/2008 08:03

Ewe- my little chubster has stopped gaining weight so have stopped weighing him. Too scary. Last count was 8.1kg and 70 cm. That's a long time for a cold. It didn't start at about the same time as solids, did it?

wontbepreggersagain · 03/10/2008 10:11

SHE'S HAD THE BABY!!!!!

Baby Jack Reuben arrived at 10.12 pm last night weighing a healthy 7lbs 12oz.

I'm more knackered today than i was after giving birth to twins

HolidaysQueen · 03/10/2008 10:29

Ewe - was just about to ask like iwaso if the cold started when she started solids. May be an intolerance - cold like symptoms can be the sign of one apparently.

On weight gain, I would try not to worry - I'm trying (but failing) not to My DS was 9lbs at birth (about 80th-85th if there was such a centile on the charts) and then fell to 50th, then 25th and then this past month has fallen to just above 9th. He's about 2kg less than where he was predicted to be given his birthweight . He has 5 bf and one 260ml (!) bottle per day plus two meals and a finger food tea yet he seems to find it very hard to put on weight... According to the HV, despite her commenting that he is clearly very happy and healthy, I am now supposed to give him 3 carb and protein rich meals plus 2 snacks and all his milk feeds per day, but at the same time the carbs can't be very gluten-based as she wants me to take that slowly as there is a history of coeliac in the family... I don't know where there is enough time in the day to think about food for him and fit all the feeding in!

HolidaysQueen · 03/10/2008 10:30

Ah, well done wbpa (and best friend. of course!)

wearehipsandmakers · 03/10/2008 11:00

I have been a very bad mother this week...
On Tuesday, after a full and frank exchange of views about the merits of randomly chucking stuff around the room, I said I wold not only put DS's toys in the bin, I would also put him in. Small pause for thought and then he announced with an air of smug triumphalism that he was too big. And then, and then, I said that he would fit if I chopped his legs off. Stunned silence followed by wail of 'well I'll just sit here and not play with anything then'.
Yesterday, I confiscated his strawberries after telling him for the 20th time to stay on the pavement and he complained that I was only telling him what not to do, and not what he could do, which is true.
Today the wee cherub had to go to nursery in wellies as we could not find his shoes anywhere.

And now I realise I haven't had DD weighed for 2 months! I have no idea what size she is, I just figure she's about right cos she's in 6-9 month clothes.

Ewe · 03/10/2008 12:18

DD still fits into some of her 0-3 month clothes! Mostly 3-6 months however.

No the cold started a few weeks before solids, just as I was reaching breaking point she managed to have an ok night! She only woke up a couple of times. Hurrah!

Oooh congrats to your friend WBPA - my SIL still has nothing, she is being put on the drip today!

Zebraa · 03/10/2008 14:24

"and then, I said that he would fit if I chopped his legs off." hahahaha!

I can't wait for DS to start yapping back at me!!!

MarchNowFebMum · 03/10/2008 17:17

am on week 5 of v snotty cold so feel your pain, ewe

fitnfortyone · 04/10/2008 14:45

grr, phoned NHS direct re LO's d&V as i thought the vomiting was more related to his cough than the bug, and they've agreed it sounds like it might be upper respitory chest infection, so have to traipse off to out of hrs surgery later. They've said to make sure we've got a bottle or 2 for him as there's likely to be a long wait even though we've got an appointment.
Hopefully me and DH's stomach's won't play up while we're there, DS has managed to pass his bug onto granny now too so I guess DH will be taking Monday off as LO prob won't be going to nursery. Damn and blast. Still, better to be checked over.

fitnfortyone · 04/10/2008 19:35

update after GP, no chest infection, but if runs don't clear up by tomorrow to give stool sample for analysis. Lovely. Still more concerned at him vomiting up 3 of his milk feeds today and screaming for ages afterwards but got the wonderfully reassuring "it's all part of the virus" spiel with no practical solutions.

merryberry · 04/10/2008 22:07

ooooh poor babe and poor you i just keep mine in my bed and stay awake beside them almost the whole time when they're like this. i need to hear them getting along, and I hope that being so close gives them comfort. i think with screaming after feeds, it is often a case of shock, rather than pain. not that that helps them any, thinking that. and not that i'm diagnosing, i'm just speculating.

last time ds1 (older than ours now, 2 years or so) had a GI upset our gp tutted at me for giving milk, on the grounds of indigestibility and ordered me to give water instead! go figure. what did yours say about that for younger babies? it would be my way forward for aiming for hydration, again, i'm disclaiming any actual proper knowledge of your baby here! but middle of the weekend with a sick baby, and it always feels like the NHS has decamped to outer mongolia, doesn't it? if you worry about his hydration, start weighing his nappies on the kitchen scales before and after they go on and keep note how much he's passing by urine and/or faeces. check his fontanelle to see if it sinks a bit inwards = dehydration, also obviously his lips will show wrinkles. if he loses more feeds, consecutively, ask nhs direct about water instead? or do you actually have an out of hours gp?

and after all that worrying sounding stuff remember who they bounce back like spacehoppers, sooner than we do! wishing you all peace through the night xxx

fitnfortyone · 04/10/2008 22:58

ta MB, he isn't dehydrated, all coming out normally apart from the runny bits iyswim. NHS direct advised to feed and give milk as normal, along with water if necessary - they said latest advice showed that withholding milk didn't actually make symptoms clear any quicker so no point in denying them the nutrients as they'd get most of it even if vomiting up afterwards.

Suspicious though that he threw up tonight's bedtime feed within minutes after another bad coughing fit, but an hour or so later I fed him some carroty puree thing and he coughed but didn't vom. Either he was put down too flat too soon earlier or he may just have a prob with milk at the mo, my money's on the latter

We do have an out of hours GP - news to me! Only thing she found on quick exam was wax build up in one ear and practically tutted at me for allowing it. No advice whatsoever on the cough. But can't fault the service in getting seen quickly since it was non-emergency

merryberry · 04/10/2008 23:03

ah, sounds good. well as i just told ds1, found sitting bolt upright in bed, only half awake, as i checked before i go to bed...night night sleep tight...etc...

iwantasecondone · 05/10/2008 07:26

Morning all. Off to Canada today after a night of finding DS three times screaming blue murder because he woke up crawling. Again. Argh...how long do they sleep crawl? I'm very tired. How am I going to eat when he's on my lap and I'm by myself?

skidoodle · 05/10/2008 08:25

iwaso have a great time in Canada. The trip there is going to be a challenge, but if anyone can manage it, I'm sure you can.

I haven't flown with DD for two months now and in that time she's changed a lot, but I would definitely make sure you have a soother for take off, landing, and turbulence. Even if he doesn't normally have one, it can make all the difference.

As for the rest of you, I'm sure it's of absolutely no consolation, but hearing about all your early wakenings is a huge relief.

DD has always been a great sleeper but in the last while (a week? two? I can't remember anymore!) she has started waking in the night again. I've been feeding her, but it doesn't seem to be entirely hunger related. There's no predictable pattern other than that she wakes at least once and is very hard to settle back again, which has not been the case since she was about 2 weeks old or so.

She also has a cold at the moment (Ewe and MNFM you poor things 6 & 5 weeks ) too, so that's not helping.

It's very bad of me to be complaining having had months of normal sleep (is getting up at 7am normal? NO, NO I say. Why must she take after her aunts instead of her parents? Why?) but like you Ewe I'm finding the night waking and working full time a bit of a grind.

How are you finding it being back BTW?

I'm doing all the night wakings because DH doesn't seem to wake up . As frustrating as this is, he might as well sleep because I just can't seem to sleep at all if I know she's awake. Some weird maternal instinct I seem to have going on despite myself

Take care all, here's hoping for some sleepy babies tonight.

fitnfortyone · 05/10/2008 19:48

iwaso hope you have a fab time and the flights all go/went smoothly!

skidoodle, I believe all DHs are the same, unable to hear their beloved child cry unless thrust under their nose and/or vomited on. Whereas I hear mine cough with both bedroom doors shut before the monitor picks it up.

Going back to work tomorrow, think it might actually seem like a rest since most of the day will be wasted when none of my logons work and IT won't sort it until lunchtime. Tried my phone number today and it wasn't working so that may have changed in the meantime.
Think LO will be ok to go to nursery, no d since Sat am and no vom today as we kept him upright after feeds for a good while. He confused us about 2am by sounding like he was crying to settle himself then coughing and waking himself up. This went on for a good 45 mins before we thought to try him on a bottle and as if by magic the tears disappeared. Would have tried it sooner if he hadn't had so much already yesterday even with the vomiting!

Am narked to have had a letter from the clinic where i had my 4D scan in Dec, they forgot to bank my cheque and have asked for a replacement one, but failed to even include an SAE or bank details. Buggered if i'm paying for a stamp to send it, so they'll have to wait until I get paid at the end of the month then do an online transfer.

MarchNowFebMum · 05/10/2008 20:13

hello all. am so tried i could cry. day 456 of waking a million times a night - am now convinced its mostly teething as there was fever last night and much ear pulling. the copious amounts of mucas coming out of her nose may be more teething than cold as well. good news in that i am hoping she'll return to her previous sleep schedule some day (wishful thinking but i am broken so let me have it!). bad news is i can't see any teeth yet. i fear sleep deprivation makes me very hard to live with, frightful both in terms of mental and physical state - poor mr marchmum.

totally agree with the not being able to sleep when she's awake. dh offers to take the morning/afternoon but i find it hard to calm down after a screaming session with her or when she's screaming in the other room. we have too small a flat.

need cheering up. does anyone's darling do something to indicate they want to eat/nurse? i had heard about babies opening shirts and banging on chests so i was prepared for this but mine puts her face really close to mine opens her mouth wide and tries to swallow my nose. it's hilarious. thank god she's cute.

skidoodle · 05/10/2008 21:05

so cute MNFM

DD has a particularly unattractive noise that is sort of like a cough that she does when she's hungry. Ach, ach, ach.

If I'm holding her she'll bop me in the boob with her head. Quite direct and to the point

Still makes me laugh to think of the doctor with the big round spit stain on her lovely cashmere jumper where DD tried to have a go to see if she'd get lucky.

This bit is hard, isn't it? You're right, thank God they're cute.

noolia · 06/10/2008 09:20

MNFM - poor you! I was feeling quite smug about DD 'sleeping through' but now she wakes once or twice in the night, I give her quick bit of booby and she goes back to sleep. I hope I'm not making matters worse by feeding her to sleep.
Hope work is okay FN41.
Any other bfers little joys started nipple twiddling? DD pulls away and kind of rolls the nipple in her fingers while gazing at in wonder, very funny, if rather painful!

evie2000 · 06/10/2008 12:50

oh dear the sleep deprivation - really sorry for all who are suffering. Sounds like there are a lot of colds around too - grim. Teething issues here - now has top and bottom teeth making the bf pretty uncomfortable and as for the nibble twiddling - his favorite past time at the moment but I am on him like a hawk cos I know what happens if he stops twiddling and just starts holding on - it hurts!
hope everyone sees light at the end of of the tunnel soon.

skidoodle · 06/10/2008 13:52

Just logging in from work to wish FnF1 the best of luck back at work today. I hope it all goes well and isn't too traumatic. Quite a toughie having to start back when LO is under the weather.

I found the first day BY FAR the worst. After that it just seemed normal to be back and I started to quite enjoy it and was easily able to compartmentalise home and work lives. It's hard work to keep it all going, but I'm not constantly missing DD or anything.

LOL noolia and evie at nipple twiddling. DD hasn't started that particular trick yet. I might try to nip it in the bud if she looks like developing inclinations in that direction

iwantasecondone · 06/10/2008 17:09

Another nipple tweaker here. Ow. When mine is hungry he just lunges for boob. Anyone's!
MNFM You sure it isn't an ear infection?
Just to say...flight to Vancouver delayed by 5 hours. Spent first hour of it on plane, then carted off and told couldn't have pushchair(thank god i packed the sling in carryon) and made to wait in cold lounge for 4 further hours. Then had 10 hr flight. P behaved beautifully but I dont think I did.
Hope everyone's cold and teething probs clear soon!
