Hi Kalo and welcome! Your LO seems fine, i wondered about the hand thing too, my niece has autism and cerebal palsy and she does it (she's 7 though) but my ds does too and so do lots of babies apparently. As the others have said babies do things at different rates, my ds seems to do everything last!

He's 81/2 months and got first tooth yesterday! He can only roll one way and doesn't do crawling. He has learnt to wave tho which is soooooo cute!

Had better go am on net in classroom and students are back from break!

sarahmikeharryandrosie · 22/09/2008 16:00

well donde on tooth toby and ginger!!!!

Rosie is waving too it is so sweet- i am sure she said mam too!!!!! (could be wishful thinking,)

off to work soon so must get dinner sorted out, where is everyone???

Egg · 22/09/2008 16:06

ARRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH

I came on here this morning, I wrote one of my mammoth posts, I clicked on "preview message" and my computer froze and I lost the whole darn thing .

I basically said how gorgeous leesmum and sarah's little lads look in their school uniforms, and then went on to answer in-depth to Kalo (hello Kalo and welcome to the gang).

I will attempt to recreate my post!

Kalo - I have twins who are 8.5 months old (born at 36.5 weeks). Neither of them babble at all, although both can form the "ma" sound when whingeing and about to cry, which turns into "mama" if they say it enough! But they dont say dada baba gaga mama etc in a babbling form.

DS1 who is 2.6 never babbled at all, not even saying "maaaaaa" like DTs do, until he was nearly a year. He talks a lot now and we have had 3 comments in the last week from strangers at swings about how good his speech is [proud], so I dont think it makes any difference in grand scheme of things if they do not babble early (despite it being one of the things they ask about at 8 month check).

Neither of my DTs do arm flapping or hand twisting, but DS2 does attempt stomach crunches and DS1 did the same. DS1 had a friend who used to arm flap alot from about 7 or 8 months and I met him again a couple of months ago age 2.6 and he seems developmentally normal (to my untrained eye but also his parents have no concerns).

No dairy allergies here, but princessllama is the queen of that one! Both my twins are having problems with finger food though, they were ok at first but now gag about 50% of the time they eat anything like a rice cake / breadstick / soft fruit / bread / biscuit etc. I have lost the will to bother trying now as they literally gag and then throw up what appears to be their entire stomach contents (usually whole milk feed or solid feed or both).

Poor sleep - I think about 90% of us on here have suffered with this one with our little ones! Some are still suffering badly now. I had a night nanny in for my DD and I am proud to say that the night nanny took 11 nights to "train" my DD to sleep better and it has never taken her more than 5 with any other baby ever in her 8 year history .

Both DTs do respond to their name, although will also sometimes respond to each other's names . They also sometimes completely ignore me even when I am a foot away from them calling their name. This is usually when they are watching DS1 or the television is on...

NEither of them point. Don't think DS1 pointed at this age either although cant remember when he did.

Neither of them sit very well, although they can sit if placed carefully in a sitting position! DS2 can sit for a while but often does try to fall forwards and puts his arms out to get into a crawling position. DD just falls like a weeble type thing to the side...

DS2 can crawl and has been for about 2 weeks. DD cannot crawl and doesn't look like she will for a while. She did try briefly but has decided it is not worth the hassle.

They can now both clap, and DD can wave, but they only do this when they decide to and not "on demand" ie dont copy me when I do it. When i say clap, I mean bring their hands together, it is not really clapping!

Sorry if this is long winded and a bit dull, but hope it helps! I must admit I was always worried about DS1 and autism (for no particular reason) and so read websites etc which had things I had never thought to look for and so got myself more worried. He is fine as far as I can tell.

I am a lot less worried this time round, although DH and I do mention that DD seems about 2 months behind her twin brother in a lot of the physical things, but she is also a lot smaller than him and seems perfectly "on the ball" otherwise.

We have our 8 month check on Friday so will report back after that! Not sure what on earth I am going to do. It is at 11am and 11:45am (two babies / two appts) and I will also have DS1 with me. My mum, my MIL and nursery are unable to look after DS1 that morning so it could be a horrendous experience! Esp as it will be lunchtime for DTs and they will undoubtedly be yelling the place down (could not choose appt was just allotted a time...).

sarahmikeharryandrosie · 22/09/2008 17:07

fab post egg- you are always so informative,

Good luck with appt on friday!!!! not had ours through yet but won't imagine my lovely but dippy hv is organised enough to get it sorted!!!!!lol

must go bath dd before i go to work, c u later

gingermumi · 22/09/2008 18:53

Had a look online for info on autism and one thing i did notice is that whilst it can be detected in babies all the places i looked said that typically autistic behaviours are seen in 'normal' babies too. Didn't see anything about tummy crunches. DS does this a lot, hadn't thought anything of it TBH. HAs anyone else heard of this as a sign for autism?

gingermumi · 22/09/2008 18:56

Have just googled stomach tummy crunches and autisn... nothing? Not sure if thats anything to worry about Kalo, i think thats just normal development. Have to go am teaching in a mo (yes... evening class!!!)

Egg · 22/09/2008 19:33

I always thought tummy crunches were just the babies trying to sit up!

Ginger I think you are working too hard... evening classes! You ought to be at home with a glass of wine .

Sarah I called my HV a couple of weeks ago and left a message asking about 8 month appt as was not sure if they contacted me or if I needed to make an appt. Two days later I got a letter in the post with the appt date so I think I reminded them it was time!

princessllama · 22/09/2008 19:38

we had a brilliant party thank you. will see if i can get a picture of dd in her robin hood outfit on the computer. have put up a few pics of christening-finally breaking my cover(well except for a few of you).
poor ferd has been ill with a virus all weekend. the night after the night we went to a and e his temp went up to 103.2 a bit unnerving but we held it together and it went down again. i think a tooth must be close because he's beside himself and can't put him down really. he is almost almost crawling. in the morning he moves himself across our bed one pace with both knees together then flops. we have almost cut out the 10pm feed (sigh). tonight he will have only 1 scoop of milk and 7oz of water. so far he hasn't noticed and just drunk it all. hope he won't get too cross. still waking twice a night and more.
am out at my book group tonight . not much talk on the book (why would we want to talk about the book!) it's just an excuse to drink wine and have a laugh. no blokes though, as every time one of us (at least) kept raising an objection to possible members as had a previous moment with them (ahem ).
Kalo-have some experience with autistic kids from being an osteopath for kids. as you fear, everyone will say you have to wait, nothing can be conclusive for sometime yet. hard to know. one of my friends is worried about her ds who is nearly 2 and it's still impossible to know. poor you, not a nice thing to be worrying about. my kids are both cow's milk protein intolerant. ds does a tiny bit of babbling when he's in a good mood and generally saves himself when he falls but lots of times doesn't.
lovely school uniforms ladies

CountTo10 · 22/09/2008 19:43

Hi all! Hope everyone'sok. It's been a manic few weeks here plus no internet for a bit so trying to catch up!!

Kalo - saw your post, welcome. Ds2 babbles but its more noise making more than anything else. He can sit up fairly well and when he falls (which is quite often!!) he never puts his hands out - I think its a while before they can do that. He also does the stomach crunching thing which ds1 also did - think this is about them training and developing the muscles to enable them to go on and move to sitting and getting up etc on their own. Does lo smile a lot or make faces etc or enjoy interaction with other people. I think its defo good to have the 8mth check with the hv and explain your worries as they can then discuss it with you.

Well a bit of a cold chill in the air and of course everyone's ill!! Ds1 started with a cold and cough midweek, ds2 got it by the weekend and now I've got it!! Poor ds2 has got it worse and has got antib's now as it's devped into a bit of a chest infection so hopefully that will clear up as he has this croupy cought that just breaks your heart when you hear it. Ds1 was such a nightmare in the lead up to being ill though, god his behaviour was awful so glad he's over it now as he's back to his old self.

Finally sorted work. I start back Dec 8th and am doing Mon, Tues & Wed which is exactly what I wanted so I'm really chuffed. New job role sounds great so all in all I'm looking forward to going back. Ds2 will do 2 days at nursery while ds1 starts school in jan (scary) and do some nursery plus they're with my mum one day so all sorted!!

Ds2 hardly putting any weight on at the mo and he's never been big so he could do with getting on a few pounds!! His eating was going really well but now what with teething and illness we're really struggling to get anything in him. Have put him on follow on milk though so hoping he's at least getting sthing!!

Did you guys ever do Bicester?

rozzyraspberry · 22/09/2008 20:05

Hi everyone.

Great post Egg! I always try not to compare babies but must be really difficult not to when you have 2. I'm sure it'll all even off and she'll do some things before ds2 and vice versa.

Ginger my lo is not rolling at all yet. I put it down to the fact that I've spent a huge chunk of the last 7 months carrying him around as it was the only way to keep him blooming happy. I'm not really concerned but I am starting to think really he should be doing something by now! He is really good at sitting up though and has been saying mamama this weekend.

Count I go back to work that week too although I'm only doing that week then off until 5th Jan. Part of me is dreading it and part of me is thinking it'll be nice to have some more adult company.

Illnesses here too. Went swimming on Saturday and lo nearly fell asleep in the pool (and he's never been a baby who would fall asleep anywhere). His cheeks were hot but back of his neck seemed fine so thought it was maybe just teeth pain. But when we got home he was really sick poor thing. Hasn't been sick since and is alert/bright etc but a bit grumpy. He's got a rash all over which I know is common with viruses but if it's still there tomorrow I'll take him to baby clinic just to get some reassurance. Luckily he seems to be eating ok now and wanted to bf a lot on Saturday so was getting plenty of fluids which was a concern.

Well done on the party princess! Off to look at your piccies now.

Hope everyone is doing ok.

sarahmikeharryandrosie · 22/09/2008 21:39

princess your pics are lovely, such beautiful hair!

Glad your party was a fantastic sucess,

off to bed up most of the night, with one thing and another,

night all

leesmum · 23/09/2008 07:59

Princess the pictures are lovely, it's nice to meet you! You and your hubby are a good looking couple Your Ferdie does have it rough doesn't he? Poor thing, all these viruses etc will make him as strong as an Ox when he's older i'm sure xxx

Rozzy hows Ds3's rash this morning? it probably is just a virus but you can't help but worry. Ds1 had loads of rashes when he was a baby and i became an expert at glass rolling!!! I hope he's ok xx

Egg, hi not "spoke to you in ages" when is the Dt's 8 month check? i must ring our HV up, its so nice to have a male HV for a change, he's lovely. It made me smile when you said the twins answer to each others names aaahhhh. Me and my sis still do it now, if i hear either Paula or Lisa i instantly turn round lol

Count you sound relieved to have sorted out work, are you looking forward to going back? I must admitt to loving being with the Girls for a few hours and having a good laugh with them all, its good for your mind And how is your Ds2? aahhh another poorly baby, i blame it on the strange weather at the moment.

Ginger, you do work hard love, and Horray for Tobys first tooth. I have only just bought ds2 his first toothbrush even though he got the bottom ones at 5 months but he seems more interested in the teething ring at the bottom of it! got it from Morrisons and he loves it (well as a toy that is) How are your girls doing ? are they both at college/Uni? Take Care xxx

Hey Sarah stop bragging about why you are up all night some of us are using our beds just for sleeping in you know!!! x

rozzyraspberry · 23/09/2008 10:09

ds3's rash not too bad this morning but took him to clinic anyway. As I thought she said it was just a virus. Good news is that after not gaining any weight for 6 weeks he's put on 4oz in the last week so pleased with that. He's been up since 5am as well as being up at 2am - teeth and virus I think - so am shattered but he's sleeping and other 2 are at school/nursery so I'm relaxing instead of doing my usual rushing about trying to get stuff done.

Lovely day here again today

sarahmikeharryandrosie · 23/09/2008 10:57

leesmum- i wish!!!!! but reading back i see why u misunderstood my message!!!!!

Glad to hear your resting rozzy i foolishly asked a friend and her 2 boys over for lunch this afternoon but feel dreadful (lack of sleep due to bed wetting ds and teething dd, plus think i have a cold on the horizon) and really wish i hadn't now!!!!

hey ho it will be lovley xxxx

have a good day everyone xxxx

gingermumi · 23/09/2008 12:06

Leesmum

dds are fine, dd1 back at uni and has own flat now. DD1 just back at college and apart from a minor row over 'too much boyfriend, not enough help at home' she's cool too.

Am doing eveing class to save on child care and i also get to spend an extra afternoon with ds. It seems to be working out ok at the mo. I leave when he's had his tea so i just miss the last hour before he goes to bed. Work not too bad but not much marking as yet. Am still trying to catch up on reading though. Was trying to do it yesterday and fell asleep on the sofa .

better go and check on chap servicing the boiler!

sallyforth · 23/09/2008 16:11

Hi everyone,
please can everyone post a lot so we are onto a new page as Sarah's description of "pancakes filled with banana, choc sauce and cream" makes me really hungry each time I open this thread!!!

sarahmikeharryandrosie · 23/09/2008 17:06

lo sally!!!!!

sarahmikeharryandrosie · 23/09/2008 17:09

sorry should have said lol Sally!!!!

lljkk · 23/09/2008 19:09

Oooh clapping, we have clapping! Real clapping, too, he does it to get the sound.
Don't be , if your baby not clapping yet, btw, DS chose to reveal his new skill around 2am this morning (for an hour...).
ZZZZzzz.....

Kalo12, your baby sounds totally normal for the age. Hand-twisting is normal, DS stared at my hand and not what I was pointing at today, too. DS3 didn't point until 16 months, his brain is wired up a bit differently, mind (left handed and slight speech delay). But nothing I'm worried about.

lljkk · 23/09/2008 19:12

Oh, and no babbling here, either, although we get comments -- like if he's fussing, and you give him a chip, we get a grunt noise meaning "Okay, I'll give that a try, at least you're responding to me now"

Egg · 24/09/2008 13:21

lljkk that reminds me, a friend whose MIL is a special needs teacher said that the majority of autistic children are left handed males.. (disclaimer - this is only what I was told, no idea if it is true). I remember watching DS1 like a hawk seeing which hand he preferred to use. He used to use both but now seems to swing to the right!

rozzyraspberry · 24/09/2008 13:25

That's interesting egg I hadn't heard that before. Ds2 is a leftie and definitely no problems there - gets it from his daddy. Apparently left handed people are more artistic and creative and that's definitely true in my little family!!

Was thinking about you yesterday egg - knew you watched neighbours and thought it was v sad yesterday - am still a bit over emotional/sentimental I think!

Egg · 24/09/2008 13:33

Oh god I always "watch" Neighbours with my MN mate Squonk and we text each other during it with "witty" comments. We were all over the place yesterday as it was so obvious what was going to happen. I did feel a bit sad thinking how awful it was but it is such a crappy (but great) programme that it never quite gets me the way some things do, like Hollyoaks a couple of years ago when they had a cot death when DS1 was still a small baby was dreadful. I was in tears every episode .

I am left handed too [proud]. So is my mum. Left handed people are extra special!

I keep wondering if one of my DTs will be a lefty and one a righty.

rozzyraspberry · 24/09/2008 16:31

We're waiting to see if ds3 is a righty or lefty as he has the casting vote! 2 of each at the moment!

miniandme · 24/09/2008 17:25

IT's meeeeeeeeeeee!!!
