Well it's the day before my little boy's first birthday. Except it has been 365 days today, so he is already 1 A year ago today I remember waddling down to the co-op which had just re-opened after refurbishment and was filled with balloons, which I hate. To add insult to injury they were playing "see how far up you can blow it without it popping" behind the counter - my favourite balloon related game.
So I stood at the counter having a huge contraction, but I slightly exaggerated the doubling over so I didn't have to see the balloon games. They didn't even notice I was in labour as they were so busy . I got a free bar of fairtrade chocolate to celebrate the reopening - that detail has stuck in my mind.
Anyway, after a false start on the early hours of the Friday morning, I spent Friday morning having quite severe contractions, and we went to hospital at 3pm. After a quick and straightforward labour Tristan was born, and don't let the Bounty picture on my profile tell you otherwise, he was beautiful. My favourite memory of being in hospital: when I went for a shower after labour, the MW said she would settle DS in his cot. Up until then I had been holding him, so I spoke up on DH's behalf and asked if he could have a hold (yes...I asked permission ). I imagined he would be all fingers and thumbs for about 10 mins and then hand him over in relief to be settled - when I came out of the shower an hour or so later he was still sitting, holding T so naturally and talking to him and he didn't really want to let him go.
My parents turned up after I'd been in the shower, and my mum fell into the room in tears!
Despite being up at 7am, showered, dressed and bags packed on the Saturday we didn't go home until the afternoon when both sets of grandparents came to visit. We drank champagne and talked about how lovely he was.
And he's continued being lovely.
He isn't walking yet, but has recently started walking (holding on) in preference to crawling where possible. He says mammaaammmaa and Da-daddy, and we realised today he also says "CASH" meaning crash when his cars crash into the wall. He loves Top Gear, Feeder and Metallica and plays a mean game of peek-a-boo, giggling behind his muslin because he's fooled us
DH still enjoys his cuddles, except they have now evolved into 2 hour long naps at the weekend. He can break my heart when he cries, and make my day when he wakes up, sees me and smiles.
