July 2007 - yet starting in June!

Well, I can't see a post natal July 2007 thread, so will start this, even though Charlotte, my DD was born 4.5 weeks early in June. I'm sure the other July ladies will be along soon enough.

Have had 2 nights at home now. Yesterday afternoon was fairly distressing as Charlotte wouldn't latch on, and if she did she wouldn't suck. But have got loan of electric pump from hospital, and support from midwives and now managing with comination of breast, expressed and formula milk, sometimes all three in the same feed. Finding it quite emotional, with all the issues associated with feeding one's baby, but trying to stay calm as found out yesterday that getting self into a state doesn't help anyone.

Dh has just gone out to get some things we're still missing, and I'm putting my feet up for a bit. Phil & Ted has just arrived so we might try a stroll down to the ante natal class tonight!

Any how, hope there are lots of lovely birth stories to come from July ladies, and that we can swap advice, give each other moral support etc over the coming weeks and months.

I seem to be getting somewhere with the daytime napping routine. Basically, when DD has been awake for about 2 hours, she starts rubbing her eyes and pulling her ears - that's when I put her in her cot for a nap. sometimes she protests and I stick a dummy in - other times I leave her awake and she just drops off! She only goes down for a max of about 45 mins, but still - it's long enough to clean the bathroom - or get onto MN!

It's interesting reading about the night routines/feeds. We dream feed DD at about 10.30pm and she usually goes through to about 4am. I think I am being too quick to jump up and put a bottle in her mouth, rather than to try to settle her, because when she wakes up at 7am, she's not interested in food until about 8.30am. Maybe if I try not to feed her, she'll drop off again and then drain a bottle at 7am. Maybe....... Who knows!

Jennster - thanks for your long haul travel experiances! We are only going for a week, so just as DD's getting used to the time difference, we'll be off again!!! Did you immediately try to get your LO's into the new time zone, or just go with the flow? I was thinking that instead of letting DD sleep for longer than an hour at 2pm local time (which would be her normal 7pm bedtime) should I try to rouse her and keep going until 7pm local time? She'll probably adapt better than me and her Dad!!!!

By the way, I seem to remember that Firststar used to chat lots on the ante-natal thread - I havent seen anything from her on this thread (although haven't caught up on the whole thing) - hope everything is okay?

Jennster · 04/10/2007 10:40

Wasn't it JAM with the longhaul advice? I'm confused

catstar · 04/10/2007 12:04

Whoops ! So it was Jennster. I seem to get everything confused these days.... thanks JAM!!

Never mind them being awake, jetlag in adults is horrible, you'll probably be awake too.

Jennster · 04/10/2007 17:48

First time I had it I thought I'd drink through it. Bad idea. I just got very drunk, very hungover, and then very tired.

Hi All! Don't get to come on here much but its nice to read how everyone is doing!

Quick question for those of you who are B/F- how often is your little one waking up in the night? Just wondering if anyone BF is getting their little one through already? Seren still wakes up a couple of times in the night and she seems to think 5am is the perfect time for getting up in the morning!!!

I've given up trying to get her on the bottle- she is just not having it. Won't even sleep feed with it now!! Grrrrrr so frustating!! Oh well- not long before weaning starts!

She nows weighs 10lb 11ozs at 11 weeks old so still quite diddy. Nice though cos it means she'll be in her 0-3 month clothes that bit longer!!

Hi, I also dont come on here much - I do read up quite a lot but always seem to run out of time to post.

But, both my boys are sleeping and DH is out and I've got a nice glass of red wine in my hand .

Princess - I'm BF and Theo wakes once or twice a night and also thinks that 6am -ish is a good time to wake up properly. Which is really annoying as by the time I've persuaded him to go back to sleep DS1 comes in to my room - Grrrr. I'm not sure if that is the norm or not but I remember DS1 BF through the night for quite a while.

Justaboutmanaging - I had nipple thrush and Theo had mouth thrush 3 times in the early weeks - mind you in hindsight it was the same bout but we just kept re-infecting each other. Anyway, you really have my sympathies - I know you say it hasn't moved to your nips yet (and fingers crossed it doesn't), but if it does, you can get relief quite quickly from Daktarin or Nystatin - just stick with the treatment. It finally went and now BF is a doddle and I've got no pain at all.

We also took DS1 to the States when he was fairly young and as I think has already been mentioned, just try your best to keep them awake until as near as possible to the right bed time, but just dont stress yourself too much. I definately got too stressed about it at the time and wish I just went with the flow a bit more. Try to sleep in sync with the baby even if it means you are out of the right time zone for a day or two as you being tired wont help much. Good luck!!! We are off to Centreparcs in the Lakes on Monday so not quite so exotic, but still it will be my first holiday with 2 LO's. . Hope it will still be a holiday!

Chooster · 04/10/2007 21:22

Sorry - that last bit was for Catstar!.

By the way, I've chatted to Firststar quite a bit on another thread and all is well with her and her little boy, Ty. I think she just struggles with finding time to post!

Cyee · 04/10/2007 22:14

On the bf'ing/sleeping front and depending on your view of 'nighttime' [I still consider 6am night!!] my LO wakes twice on a good day, and three times normally. So the other night she went down at 8pm, and fed at 3am and 6.30am. Last night she went down at 8pm and woke at 12pm, 3.30am and 7am. Also finding it hard to settle her to sleep after her nighttime feeds. She's sooo grunty!

dorisofdevon · 04/10/2007 22:58

Hi i'm also lurking lots but always have dh saying "go to bed" so never get round to posting

LO is still bfing and normally wakes once but if dh gives her a late bottle of expressed milk she can go through to 6or 7am -to those bottle feeding how much on average do your little ones take each feed ( ml as I can only work in new money)??? As I never know how much to give and as it's so easy compared to the boob she down's whatevers there in one.

We've also stopped swaddling and put her in a grobag (found them absolutely brilliant with dd1 as once she started moving and dislodging covers, it stopped me getting paranoid about her being cold in the night)

Princess- we both have diddy ones dd2 was 10lb 1oz at 12 weeks but she still above the red bit on the chart and gaining every week (71/2oz last week)

Had another CF clinic appointment today it's 6 weeks since the last and they're pleased with the weight gain and her last cough swab didn't grow anymore bugs so no extra antibiotics for the moment yeah!!!! Feel like I've passed another little test! Can now contemplate visiting the family "up north" ( well isn't everywhere from devon!!!)

To those going on holiday and flying it's so much easier with a baby (just can't bear the thought with DD1 who is now 2) just make sure you either have breast or a bottle ready for take off and landing) Travelled quite frequently (on my own)with DD1 as I was living in Gibraltar and quite enjoyed the journey Good Luck and go with the flow (didn't have to face the jet lag thing tho')

Right really must go as tomorrow morning can only bring more cries of "mummy need wee wee/ poo poo" from DD1 as I'm mid feed with DD2 what joy potty training is but that's a whole other forum!!!

Sorry for the epic post but once I get going there's no stopping

Best wishes

Doris

Hi all,

Typhoonsmum.. re the cold.. Lee has had one for a while now.. I put vaseline over the bridge of his nose and just round his nostrils.. it seeps in and loosens the snot.. so hat it can run freely and you can wipe away. I have done this with with all three of mine.. and it has worked..

When Lee was weighed at 8weeks he weighed 11lb 2oz.. so had gained4+lbs.. great going considering he was so ill and practically starved for 2weeks....omg how big would he have been!! lol.. He sleep from between 9pm abd 10pm till 7am.. which is great.. he has a bottle then goes back to sleep till 9-10am then another bottle then sleep.. till 1pm.. wakes up for a bit has a bottle.. back to sleep.. till 4pm then stays awake.. come 7pm he feeds nearly constantly till bed time..

Get him weighed again on the 16th Oct when hew goes for his next jabs..

Is anyone thinking of having a nother baby yet!!!!!!!

Jennster · 05/10/2007 10:13

Ha ha ha ha ha rofl 2+1. This time after 1st I was raring to go. This time I've had enough I think. I'd need to move house too so ask me in 8 years. I can see a late baby on the cards.

Thanks for all the flying advice - I'm sure it'll all go fine..... . It's really nice to have something like that to look forward to. When we get back it won't be long until "My First Christmas"! I've turned into one of those people that wants to dress their baby up like a reindeer or something - for photographic reasons of course!!!

DD has turned into a TV addict! Sometimes when I feed her and the TV is on (Jerry Springer or Maury usually ) she turns around and is captivated! I've now invested in the Baby Einstein DVD's and would definitely recommend the Mozart/Beethoven/Bach ones - much better for her than American chat shows.

As for another baby, I'm coming round to the idea! After the birth, I was adamant I couldn't go through that again, but time heals...... I think DH would take a lot of convincing - and it would be for another couple of years. Thing is, I'm 35 tomorrrow so I hear that clock.....

Hope you are all experiencing the same gorgeous weather!

typhoonsmum · 05/10/2007 13:21

NO MORE BABIES EVER! even going to ask about steriliation.

James is concerning me. He started to get funny wth his bottles at the beginning of the week and we discovered he had thrush in his mouth. That has since cleared up but he is still funny with his bottles. Take this morning for example I fed him at 10pm last night hoping he'd sleep thru. He woke at 4.30 am and I tried to get him to sleep without a bottle but it wasn't working. I gave him a bottle but he only took 3oz and put him back down when he filled his nappy twice (which is probably what woke him not being hungry)Tried to give him another bottle later as he hadn't finished the 4am one and he didn't take it. He didn't take his 10am one either. He has pretty much slept since about 10.30. He doesn't have a temperature and doesn't seem ill. Could it just be as simple as he wasn't hungry at 4am and as I tried to feed him then and at 8am and 10am (All of whichhe took 1-2oz max)he isn't hungry now or could it be something else!

MelissaM · 05/10/2007 13:25

Sorry - had bad day on Wednesday and busy day yesterday so haven't had chance to read posts let alone reply to any!

Princess - I'm bf'ing and prior to her 12 wk growth spurt Evelyn hadn't wanted to wake for a feed at 10.30pm, so we left her. She is fed about 6pm and settled in bed by as near to 7pm as I can - usually 7:15pm. She was then waking between 2.30 and 3.30 for a feed then going through to 7/7.30am. Wed night/Thurs morning she didn't wake up until 4.30 am, and last night she woke for a feed at 10.30, then went through to 7. She did stir several times in the night, but I left her to settle herself thinking that she will cry if she is actually hungry. Btw she is 12 wks 5 days. She was weighed yesterday and is now 13lbs 2 1/2 oz (she's put on 21 1/2 oz in 2 wks!!!

2+1, yes we've been talking about no 2. Although I have pnd (but not too severe thankfully) I think I would like a 2nd quite close to DD as this stage is so hard and time consuming, I don;t think I will want to go back to this once DD is 2 or 3 and we can start to do more. Ideally I would be 6 mths pg by time go back to work so wouldn't have to be there too long b4 being off for another year. Not sure that it's likely to happen that way though. My cousin had her two DS's within 11 months!

DD has a cold too - seems to have been hanging around for ages - I've changed her 2nd immunisations app to next week in the hope that it will have cleared by then.

Good news re cf checkup Doris

Typhoonsmum - how old is James now?

MelissaM · 05/10/2007 13:27

Typhoonsmum - how old is James now?

typhoonsmum · 05/10/2007 13:30

he is 8 weeks tomorrow. Has had two biggrowth spurts and is weighing in at 11lb 9oz last week.

MelissaM · 05/10/2007 13:33

He could be tired from all that growing he's been doing. Or if he has just had his jabs, that could make him sleepy.

typhoonsmum · 05/10/2007 13:35

his jabs are next week. just nipping to the shop now before he wakes.

pulapula · 05/10/2007 15:06

Doris- I was wondering how much other LOs were drinking too. DS has 230ml EBM(8oz) at 6.30pm, and a further 180ml (6oz) at 11pm, and if we give a bottle in the day then we usually give him 180ml. But he never leaves any milk in the bottle, and now after his 6.30pm bottle, he quite often takes whatever is available in both breasts, and this is after a full feed at 5 or 5.30pm too! He is never sick though, so assume he is genuinely hungry.

We have stopped swaddling at night for 3 nights running but he still cries out a lot in the night but is usually asleep/sleepy and its just his hands annoying him. Is this something he will get used to?

He has also been really unsettled in the evening for the last week. He seems to be having a lot of green poos (or purely liquid poos) which seem to be disturbing his sleep more. Anyone else have this? Maybe I should keep a food diary to check what could be irritating him, as we have had a few spells of green poos and windiness.

As for more babies, we talk a lot about this, but usually agree that we don't want any more (2 seems plenty). I am 36 in Jan so feel a bit like if I want another then we should do it soon, although we were very lucky to conceive both LOs in the first month of trying.

PS Am I the only one not to have done the deed with hubby since having LO (who is now 14 weeks)? We are both still too tired and we haven't sorted out any contraceptives yet either, although my periods didn't return last time until 4 weeks (to the day) that I stopped BFing.
