A new thread for those of us that are now in the post-natal phase: somewhere to chat about feeding, sleeping (or not) and all things newborn!

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Welcome and congratulations to all the new arrivals! My little one is now nearly seven weeks and has put on 2kg already. She’s gone from tiny to chunky really fast - good work boobs! Does anyone’s baby have any sort of routine yet? Mine doesn’t, just seems to want to be awake every time I need to eat or shower!

Mine is sleepy too so I have to wake him. Sometimes he stirs between the 4 hour intervals but I'm not supposed to let him go longer than 4. He was having breathing issues when he was born so got transferred to ICU, but they still don't know what the cause was, he's on antibiotics in case of infection but they don't have the cultures back yet. He doesn't need oxygen any more so that is great but he's still struggling to regulate his body temperature so he sleeps on a heat pad with an actual mountain of blankets and a folded muslin around his head like a hat! It's so weird because SIDS guidelines usually have you keeping them cool but he literally needs all of this or his heart rate drops. I've been doing some kangaroo type care with him too and even DH noticed his body temperature adjusts to support him.

Selfishly it's horrible as well because it means this room is really stuffy and we aren't able to open the windows! The other baby I'm sharing with is in a normal cot now rather than a heat pad.

Congratulations and hellos to the new people on the thread. I agree with fourplusonemore about the newborn anxiety thing. I told myself not to stay up all night watching the baby breathe, but the night she was born, it was all I could do. I've calmed down a bit now, but still wake with a start in the night and check and give her a squish if she's been napping for a bit in the day.

@Gem173 i noticed that the newborn dummies were really big!!! Those first 10 days i really was glad to have the mw calling every so often in fact i was really i was really sad to see her go as she felt like a bit of a safety net for the reassurance i was doing the right thing if that makes sense
@birdy1978 i had a bit if a routine going but the past too days my lg has decided she no longer needs sleep unless she is so tired shes falling asleep!!
I found the first week my anxiety was with her feeding was she getting enough was she having enough nappies how many feeds it was awful but i put that down to she kept losing weight until she was nearly a week old

Gem173 · 23/08/2018 18:25

I find the cherry dummies are better for Lincoln as they are bigger and round so he can clamp his chops round it and it will be quite hard to come out. He also has mam dummies but they are quite flat and he usually just shoots them out across the room 😂
Been out for my brothers 18th at a expensive restaurant. Lincoln was very good slept most of the way through, but nappy changing time proved difficult when he started screaming and crying and everyone just turned and stared lol
He was settled in the end tho and I had quite a few compliments off of some ladies about how cute he is. So job well done 👍

Hope everyone’s day went to plan :)

birdy1978 · 23/08/2018 20:03

We were out at a smart restaurant today as well Gem173! Our tenth wedding anniversary and my little girl slept like an angel through most of the meal. Little old dears having lunch on the next table were smitten. Less so with my noisy unruly three year old! None of my pre-pregnancy dresses fit yet so I had to emergency purchase a smartish top I could feed in without flashing boobs!

Just as I feel we're getting nowhere with feeding, and I'm revisiting my plan to pump, it seems he's going to surprise me. I mean, I wish it didn't have to be 2am that he picked, but I'm glad he seems to want to turn it around?

somersetsinger · 24/08/2018 14:00

Good news, Bertie. 2am is a classic baby witching hour, isn't it? Both of mine revel in the 2am-4am slot.

Gem173 · 24/08/2018 16:12

Lincoln wants food at midnight then 3am (takes an hour to feed and change and burp) then again at 6am 😂 I swear my body feels like crap

somersetsinger · 24/08/2018 22:03

Gem, do you definitely need to change him after a feed? I can get one nappy to last all night if it only has wee in.

lmx0 · 24/08/2018 22:08

Ohh check you ladies out fancy restaurants!! I don't the confidence just yet for that type if outing 😂 i change before i feed therefore she falls asleep and i plonk her into bed

Gem173 · 25/08/2018 10:28

@somersetsinger
Oh I usually change him if I know he’s weed. Don’t like leaving him in a wet nappy 😂

lmx0 · 25/08/2018 11:01

I change her if i know shes went which during the day is normally typical as soon as clean nappy on but at night shes normally good n if i do its the quickest n gentlest nappy change ever n hope she doesn't wake lol

Gem173 · 28/08/2018 20:52

It’s my official due date tomorrow and we are spending it registering lincoln at the registry office. So unreal that he’s been here 16 days already and oh will be going back to work next week leaving me and the baby on our own! Time is just flying by !

lmx0 · 28/08/2018 23:22

Oh wow what a lovely big step i remember getting my lg registered it was like making her that little bit more real how are you feeling about him going back to work?

Gem173 · 29/08/2018 21:53

@lmx0 bit nervous tbh, the baby is actually pretty good but still scary to think he will depend just on me. How about you?

lmx0 · 30/08/2018 12:21

@Gem173 i remember the week before my dh went back to work it played on my mind but it was grand me and the lo just pattered around and by the time i realised what time it was dh was nearly home once you get the first day over with you sort of fall into a bit of a routine (well as much as you can with a nb!)

Bibijayne · 30/08/2018 23:00

Hello! Baby Henry is two weeks today (he was due 7 September but arrived early). Hubbie, Henry, dog and I ventured out this afternoon for a short walk in the park and light lunch.

Baby boy is pretty small still - but very strong. Trying to work out when he wants to feed. Yesterday he wanted boob pretty much all the time from 6pm yesterday to 7am this morning (shattered mum and dad). Though he seems to be on a better schedule today. Tomorrow is another day though!

Emmasmum2013 · 02/09/2018 04:27

Do I still get to join even if mine tipped into September?
Currently sat in hospital bed staring at her. She's fast asleep.
She was massive, 9lb 4oz!!! Can't believe I did it. And with no pain relief other than a bit of gas and air and that seemed to do naff all to be honest.

somersetsinger · 02/09/2018 08:56

Hello Bibi and Emmasmum. Congratulations on the babies. Also, 9lb 4oz?!? Flippin' heck. It doesn't bear thinking about.

lmx0 · 02/09/2018 15:11

@Bibijayne its so hard when they want boob constantly isnt it!! Good on you for venturing out it can be hard!! I still struggle going anywhere
@Emmasmum2013 course you do!! Oh WOW 9lb4oz well done you and no pain. Relief how on earth did you manage?!

Emmasmum2013 · 03/09/2018 12:11

@lmx0 I really didn't have time for any pain relief. I was admitted when I was around 5cm. About an hour later I was crying for an epidural and I thought I still had hours to go since I was only 5 not that long ago. Turns out I was 10cm and midwife told me to go for it and push! It was absolutely crazy fast

lmx0 · 03/09/2018 13:50

@Emmasmum2013 oh wow that was quick!!!

Emmasmum2013 · 03/09/2018 16:38

Did anyone else feel like your whole mid section, like post partum tummy and ribs etc are destroyed after labour? I don't remember feeling like this with my first but it's like all my stomach muscles are totally loose and everything is really like a lead weight on the front?

BertieBotts · 03/09/2018 21:58

I had that a bit to begin with but it seems to be improving. But there is always a chance of distasis recti so you really must try to take it easy as much as possible - don't strain yourself too much.

However the overriding sensation there on day 2/3 was the muscle ache from the hours of contractions - is it that do you think?
