Babies born July/August 04

Hello everyone. My DS2 was born on July 4th and I have been waiting for a "Babies born in July" thread since then, but none has appeared! (at least I don't think it has). So I thought I should start one, I didn't have Mumsnet for DS1 and I wish I had. I thought it should be July/August since almost all of the July babies were/are late! How is it going for you all?

I didn't use to have any routine with Thomas but I am now using a few Gina Ford ideas and it has made my life much easier, more predictable.
8am wake up
8am porridge feed + remainder of milk
10am nap
11am little snack (fruit, yoghurt), 7 oz bottle
1pm nap
2pm 7 oz bottle
4pm nap
5pm dinner
7pm 5oz bottle and to bed

I don't wake him up in the morning (as opposed to what GF suggests) so sometimes he sleeps a bit longer and the schedule shifts a bit. My basic rule is: feed and sleep every 3 hours.

MrsEvs · 17/01/2005 18:57

Have got into a routine with Phoebe now too, she seems to like it and it does make life a little easier, planning your day etc.

8am wake up - takes about 5-6oz bottle
10am - nap
11am - baby rice mixed with fruit, 2-3ozs from cup
1pm - another little power nap
2pm - snack of fruir or veg and 5-6oz bottle
4pm - nap
5pm - 5-6oz bottle
6.30 - dinner
7pm - bath
7.30 - song, story, 6oz bottle and bed

Bought her one of those doorway jumper things at the weekend. The first time I put her in she didn't seem to know what to do, but today she got the hang of it and was grinning madly as she bounced up and down. I think they recommend you only let them be in them for a certain amount of time - does anyone know how long? Is it like 10mins at a time or something?

sweetkitty · 17/01/2005 22:37

good to see other peoples routines although we don't have as many naps - well I could do with some more power naps anyway

I got the bounty progress pack today and it was filled with follow on milk samples, some cow and gate jars and some sachets all but one had added sugar

Sponge · 18/01/2005 11:55

Welcome Lexy.
You could try giving his milk before each meal so he has some first. Otherwise try incorporating into the diet in other ways - cereals made up with milk, yoghurts, cheese etc -this all counts towards the daily pint.
Harry's on a bit of a routine. Wakes at 7am with us, feeds roughly 3 hourly with 2 short naps and sometimes one longer one a day. Still wakes up for a night feed.
We were starting him on solids but he's been quite poorly, puking and diarrhea since Thursday, so I've stopped for the time being until he's better. I'm off work with him today as he can't go to nursery.
He does roll a lot and now he can choose he mostly sleeps on his front. He's also just learnt to blow raspberries which he thinks is hilarious - and he's right .

Sponge · 18/01/2005 11:58

Littlerach, I'd hold off giving anything wheat based until at least 6 months. Introducing it too early can lead to intolerance. Meat at about the same time I think but only because it's chewier and harder to digest than veg and fruit.

LexyB · 18/01/2005 13:40

Have tried giving Stanley bottles mid- morning and mid-afternoon and he is taking a lot more, so i'm happier now. Interesting to see other peoles routines - fairly similar to what we are doing now although he is one of the younger babies. I'm surprised how quickly he adjusted to it.
He has also learnt to blow raspberries recently - and yes it is funny!

littlerach · 18/01/2005 14:02

Thanks sponge, not long until 6 months now, it has all gone so quickly.

cricket · 18/01/2005 16:25

Hello, I'm new to Mumsnet too! Wish I'd found it sooner. Sam was born on 12 August 04 (a week early) and is now just over 5 months. Anyone got any tips on daytime naps as Sam seems to refuse to sleep unless rocked in his pram and then only for 20 mins at a time...

dinosaur · 18/01/2005 16:31

Hello cricket and all other newcomers!

Wish I had the answer on those daytime naps - Blake (5.5 months) is a dreadful sleeper at night and by day too!

MrsEvs · 18/01/2005 20:30

Welcome Cricket, Phoebe usually has 3 naps a day but at least two of those are only 20-30 mins (and the third is usually only about an hr if I'm lucky!), I also have to rock her off for all of them, although in my arms not the pram. Maybe that's all Sam needs?

A friend of mine has a 2 year old who has never slept in the day after about 3 weeks old, but she always slept well at night so she didn't worry. Some babies just need less sleep than others I think?

Sorry, no miracle cure , but if it doesn't seem to bother Sam I wouldn't worry. The only thing I can suggest is try making his naps at the same time every day, and then he might come to expect them and resist less?

Quacks · 18/01/2005 20:37

Hiya, I've found daytime naps this time much harder! DD1 was a true gind ford baby. DD2 is a bit more rocky. I have beent rying to 'fine tune' the lunchtime nap but I think I'm going to put it down to all babies being different! I put her in her cot for her sleeps, same routine everytime, then if she wakes after 40 mins I do the same, put on the night mobile, kiss, tuck in and say 'bobies time'. She'll now go off again, but that's it then. I get 1.5 hrs now at lunch time, some days if I'm very lucky 2 hrs, but that's if she;s been out and swimmimg or something! Today just an hour as she was desperate for her milk for some reson!
Anyway, her routine:
7am - wake and 7oz milk
8.15, brekky and remaining oz
9.15 - bobies
10.30 - extra milk ( I know!)
12 - lunch
12.15 - bobies
2.15 - 6oz milk
4.15 - quick bobies
6 - bath
6.30 - 8oz milk
7 - bed
So basically GF, but a bit more flexible. I was very strict with DD! and although I got 3 hours sleep from her per day, she was SO inflexible!

Harrysmom · 18/01/2005 20:53

Following (more or less) GF too. Is anyone starting to indroduce the protein lunch and savoury dinner at the moment?

Tried the tier feeding method but DS was having none of it so Ive just switched over from bottle first / food after to the opposite.......and he cried all the way through his lunch and dinner until he got his bottle

hermykne · 18/01/2005 21:04

harrysmom just about to start the protein lunch and ds gets a savory dinner presently, with fruit puree etc for 11/11.30am.

how are the night routines going? i am following gf too with the naps and feed times however ds still having a feed at 10.30/11 and then at 2or 3 am depending and then anytime form 6am to 7am for first morn feed?

quacks with all that milk does your baby sleep well at night?

LexyB · 18/01/2005 21:13

Anyone else trying to get pregnant again? Been with me dh for 6 years now and as we both had children from previous relationships for a long time we were sorting out all the problems that step-children and ex-partners have on a relationship and for ages he did not want any more children but evenually we decided to have one together ( which is why there is such a big age gap between my other children and Stanley ) I was sure I would be happy with one, plus worried about my age ( 38 ) but now he's here I am desperate for another one. Partly because I want Stanley to have a playmate more his own age within the household but also because I'm enjoying him so much. And to a lesser extent I would definately stay at home with 2 little ones. The nearer it gets to me having to return to work the less I want to but unfortunately I am commited to return or pay back maternity pay, although our circunstances at the time I made my decision were very different and if I knew how our situation would change I would have left.

Harrysmom · 18/01/2005 21:18

My DS has been having savoury at 11.30 for about a month now, with rice and fruit puree at 6pm. Have just started to give protein lunch and savoury dinner...seems not to be fussy with food, just seemed to protest when I switched from bottle/food to food/bottle.

The nightime rountine is ok touch wood. he has a milk feed at 7pm (ish) then sleeps through to about 6am.....although last night he woke me up ar 3am, not for food but to let me know his nappy had leaked and he was soaking.

littlerach · 19/01/2005 09:40

So what is this protein lunch etc? I must confess that I read GF with DD1 and though No Way!!! Too regimental for me, but maybe it is what we need!!!

cricket · 19/01/2005 09:44

Thanks to Quacks and MrsEvs for the daytime nap tips. I've just rocked him to sleep in my arms for a change (don't do this often it kills my back now that he's 20lbs plus!)and he has eventually gone off. Let's see how long he stays asleep....It is weird because he is so good at going to sleep at his bedtime - he will go straight into his cot and go off to sleep by himself but during the day it's another story...Anyway, back to the protein lunches (am intrigued too)

sweetkitty · 19/01/2005 13:39

welcome newbies

Well Abbie is officially 6 months tomorrow, where has the time gone??? Got her weighed yesterday and she is 15lbs 9ozs still small and following the 25th centile but she still looks chubby I think she is just meant to be petite (much to my mothers disgust who thinks she should weight more than that).

I've started giving her cows milk in her cereal, yoghurt and cheese this week and she's happy with them all. She's a little devil though because she gets fed up of the veg half way through but always manages to eat her fruit afterwards (bit like her mum sweet tooth). I'm holding off meat for another month I reckon but am going to start wheat etc next week theres no allergies in our family so I think she should be ok.

sweetkitty · 19/01/2005 13:41

oh on daytime naps if she's out in the pram she have 30 mins in the morning and between 30 mins to 2 hours in the afternoon. I've tried routines and try and put her down the same time every day but she suits herself.

Harrysmom · 19/01/2005 16:10

Protein lunch:- just adding a bit of protein to diet, ie: fish, chicken, lentils etc....according to GF, best to do this at lunchtime meal.

Sponge · 20/01/2005 16:21

Weaning still on hold here as Harry still has a very runny bottom although the puking has slowed.I'm doing the closest thing I can to the BRAT diet for his tummy bug at the mo - baby rice and mashed banana. Let's hope he settles down soon - it's been a week now poor little mite.
Still he's perfectly happy despite it all so I'm not too worried. It's just a pain.

Eshay · 20/01/2005 16:27

Sorry, I need to let off some steam. Today I had an interesting experience in Superdrug. I pushed my pram into the store and started making my way down the back as that is where they keep their baby things. There were two women kneeled down, looking at make-up, and I stood there for a few seconds, hoping they would notice me and move out of the way. They didn't notice me so I said 'excuse me' but they ignored me. I had to say it twice more before they took notice of me. They stood up but still blocked the isle so I pointed out that I had a pram and didn't want to run over their toes. Then one of them told me to back up and go down another isle. Of course I refused to do this. I think I'm lucky that they did move at that point - they seemed like they would have enjoyed yelling at me some more.
I know people don't like mums with prams very much but usually a polite 'excuse me' and a big apologetic smile makes even the grupmpiest of old ladies make way. These two managed to upset my mood for the rest of the day.
Wow. Typing that has made me feel a lot better.

Harrysmom · 20/01/2005 17:01

Some people eh? Get this...when I was 9 months pregnant and sat on a packed bus, a mum and new baby got on, and no one offered her their seat...except me! She said oh no, are you sure, so I said loudly none of these other "a" holes are moving.

Chickpea · 20/01/2005 17:02

Hello all.
Eshay - My dh takes great pleasure in catching the back of peoples heels with the puchchair then when they turn round to see the cause of their bleeding feet he just gives them a grin. Perhaps these two girkls had runinto my dh before they came across you!

Space cadet - I am due on 18th August and DD will be 13 months too!! Did I count right will this be number 6 for you?!?!

Your routines are very impressive. Martha has a routine but the length of her sleeps varies from 30 mins to 3hrs. She is going to bed really well at night in fact she nearly always has done which has been a total blessing but she wakes once in the night for a bf. Occassionally she sleeps through. Is anyone else bf still?

Quacks - you seem to have it all so sorted.

cp

dinosaur · 20/01/2005 17:05

chickpea and spacecadet - wow at you two!

I'm still breastfeeding a lot - Blake is just not interested in solids - in fact am breastfeeding as I type.
