I had DS on the 5th - couldn't see an October thread yet. This is dc2 for me, I already have a 2 yo DD. Feeling ok but knackered - DD been good with the baby although bedtimes haven't been easy, I think she is jealous of the baby being in our room/not going to bed. DH is back to work tomorrow, am dreading it a little...anyone else out there? How are you getting on?

How did the 6 week check go?

dotladotla · 01/12/2015 22:51

Thanks ladies. She slept on my chest last night and I put pillows around us so I got some sleep myself. I'll see how we get on this week but if she still seems sore I'll get that second opinion-thanks for the help ladies.
How did your six week check go Nocta?

Nocta176 · 02/12/2015 12:04

All good thank you - she is perfectly healthy. I just need to make the time for a blood test to check my iron levels - had to have a tooth extracted today though (ouch) so won't be sorting that out until I've recovered from that!

How were your check ups?

Nocta176 · 02/12/2015 12:05

Glad you got some sleep Dot

katsnmouse · 02/12/2015 17:37

dot glad you got some sleep. it is the only way i get any, unless i 'break the rules' and put her down on her tum- she sleeps for 3-4 hour chunks instead of 10 minutes that she would do on her back. Soon the gaviscon seems to possibly be helping, but her poo has gone waxy Confused, and now she seems constipated. we've also been referred to see about her possibly having a tt so i'm hoping the reflux is secondary to that, and having it snipped will solve everything! wishful thinking :)

dotladotla · 03/12/2015 01:15

Kat-that's why my doctor said her didn't want to give DD gaviscon- because it makes them constipated. Bloody nightmare...surely someone has invented a baby reflux medicine that doesn't cause constipation Confused
Our six week checks went fine. I got prescribed dioralyte to make me more, ahem, regular in that department. Waiting for my iron blood test results but I suspect it's low and I'll need tablets.

DH is currently downstairs trying to get DD to take an expressed bottle to get her used to it but I can hear her crying (she's not taking any at all) and it's breaking my heart. She took one on Monday but not last night or tonight. I didn't give her one for the recommended six weeks because of b/f but now she won't take a bottle or a dummySad

Besides that I'm just enjoying her smiles now. Such a nice stage! I'm sad to be putting the newborn suits away though, it's passing so quickly.
How's everyone else getting on?

SoontobeMommyof2 · 03/12/2015 02:07

I must admit mine sleeps on is tummy and I get decent amounts of sleep. If it works go for it.

Currently got any type of feeding refusal :( he has a bad cold and just doesn't want anything. Keep offering him small feeds and he having little sips. Heartbreaking as there is nothing he can have.
6 week check went well.. I'm still on the iron tablets :( been on them since 33 weeks and still not very high.
They aren't babies for long :(

dotladotla · 04/12/2015 14:13

Soontobemummy - that must be difficult, and heartbreaking that he's not eating. Is he all bunged up? Apparently asda menthol baby bath is great when they are stuffy. Poor wee thing Sad
DD has now refused 3 bottles and taken one so its not going well!

SoontobeMommyof2 · 04/12/2015 19:06

Yeah fully bunged up.. he's fed a bit better today having small amounts but better than nothing. He's usually a good feeder.

I'll send DH to have a look thanks :)

What bottles are you using? Keep trying I'm sure you'll get there.

dotladotla · 05/12/2015 09:03

I've got Tommee tippee bottles that we tried her with water then having been using a NUK one with the latex teat that is a bit more nipple like. I'll try her with the tommee tippee with the milk and see how that goes. Also just bought a Mam anti colic one to try.
Last night I just had the one glass of wine instead but it was the best glass I've ever had after 9 months of no boozeGrin. I sound like such an alcoholic but I assure you that I'm not!
I hope you had a better night and the wee one is feeling a bit better soontobemummy x

SoontobeMommyof2 · 06/12/2015 03:56

I've got the tommy tippee ones.. some take slightly longer to take to the bottle. Is she feeding ok otherwise?
He's improving.. he's got thrush now but the walk in clinic gave him some gel for his mouth which has helped massively.
Oh I can't wait to have a glass of wine too.. got my leaving do coming up so I shall have a couple of glasses then. I hadn't drank since Christmas last year lol. X

dotladotla · 09/12/2015 14:46

Yes, she's feeding great on the boob. The health visitor today said to just persevere and she'll take it eventually. Hopefully before Christmas!
She was measured and weighed today and she's doing well. 50th percentile for both.
I hope your wee boy is feeling better soontobemommyof2

SoontobeMommyof2 · 09/12/2015 20:52

Thank you.. he has improved now but they have weighed him and he's dropped below the 50th centile so they need us to go back to be weighed again next week. Got his 1st injections next week :-/
That's good and fingers crossed so you can have a Christmas glass of wine

dotladotla · 13/12/2015 06:28

Soontobemommyof2 - DD has got injections on Wednesday... I'm dreading next week Sad

Is anyone struggling to get their baby to take a dummy? I know that some people might think them not taking a dummy is a good thing but my sister is a dental nurse & says that dummies can be better than thumbs or tongue comforters because they can be taken away by the time adult teeth come in, whereas a thumb can't. DD has taken to sucking the side of her hand, so often the side of her suit and it's all wet and yucky!
I also feel that my DD might settle more with one and it could help her soon when we try to wean her off sleeping in our bed. Anyway, enough of trying to explain myselfWink
How do I get her to take the dummy? She's 8 weeks old now and just pushes it out with her tongue (unintentionally I think). I had been told to persevere and hold it in/push it back in but we've been persevering for weeks now...any tips?

SoontobeMommyof2 · 13/12/2015 19:32

Yeah we have injections on Wednesday not looking forward to it at all. Do you have to take the baby's temperature and give calpol ha

SoontobeMommyof2 · 13/12/2015 19:33

*half an hour before?
Dummies my first never would have one but she grew out of thumb sucking at 2 xl

Nocta176 · 15/12/2015 15:14

Interestingly we're in a different european country at the moment and here babies have their vaccinations at 12 weeks, 20 weeks and one year, which is much more different to the UK than I was expecting - fortunately we should be able to fix it so that she has all the injections here rather than trying to mix and match with the UK! And they have a 6-in-1 jab rather than a 5-1 jab.

Hope all your injections go fine this week.

dotladotla · 16/12/2015 00:06

Nocta176 - what's the extra vaccine/dose for in the 6 in one?

Soontobe- yes, the pharmacist said calpol just before them and after too. good luck for tomorrow!

Merlin333 · 18/12/2015 05:13

Dotladotia have u had any luck with dummy? I tried my lo back a while ago as she was using me as one!! She took it a couple of times by me putting it in and rubbing her cheeks but the rest of the time wld just scream if i tried so i gave up! In rhe last couple of wks she has been wanting to use me as dummy again so i retryed so after i knew she wasnt hungry i laid her on my lap on pillow and put it on her cheek and as she tuened her head jyst held it still rather than put it in so sge played wirh it then wgen it did go in she used it properly and fell asleep :) but atm im trying not to use it too much cos am now worrying what if sge keeps waking in the night cos it falls out!!!! Grr its so hard knowing what to do for thw best....has yr lo taken a bottle yet? Xx

dotladotla · 18/12/2015 07:51

No luck so far Merlin - she didn't seem to realise that it was her tongue pushing the dummy out so it wouldn't stay in no matter how long we held it for. She has taken to sucking the side of her hand instead this week so I tried it again twice but she gagged both times. She is trying to suck my finger or her hand or my shoulder regularly so I'd much prefer her to take the dummy. Maybe once she's used to a bottle she'll take a dummy.
A bit of success with the bottle. She has now taken 2 bottles out of the five we've tried her with! The last one she took was with the tommee tippee variflow teat that is meant to be better for breastfed babies. We keep forgetting to try her with a bottle every night though. Will make a conscious effort over the next week before the festivities!
She had her injections on Wednesday, which have made her super sleepy and also oversensitive-she cries even if you put her into a different position and won't let me out of her sightShock I'm hoping that the clingyness to me will pass because at the moment I can't even go for a shower without tears.
I suppose it's no wonder that she's like this with so many viruses inside her wee body-what a shame. She was pretty brave getting them done, just short lived crying.

Merlin- has your little girl been taking the dummy by herself since that? DD will usually take it if I hold it and keeping putting it back in but not by herself, we must have held it for hours and hours now (not in one session!).
Has anyone found car journeys a mission? DD used to be fine but the last week or two she has screamed anytime we take her in the car. Any tips?

katsnmouse · 18/12/2015 08:09

DD had her jabs yesterday and has been super sleepy/sensitive too Dotla. Even if she moves in her sleep she is crying out :( It is horrible but i know the results of not vaccinating could be much worse.

I'm wondering which dummy to try next too: we had the mam ones which she took initially but now can't hold them in her mouth. She has had a TT divided and also has a really high palate so i'm hoping sucking a dummy for short periods in between feeds may help flatten her palate?!

Merlin333 · 18/12/2015 18:12

If shes upset she definatly wont tske it but if not she has done a couple of times but then today she just played with it and kept pushing it out and then grinning lol she has taken aboit 3 bottles now and tomorrow nite im going to a xmss meal so leaving a bottlw with my mum...im looking forward to going as will b first time but also a bit worried thst she wont take the bottle!!!! But im only 5 mins away so can always come back x

dotladotla · 21/12/2015 09:04

My sister gave me a clear tommee tippee dummy yesterday that she'd get for my niece in the early days because the teat bit is smaller so I'm trying that. No gagging so far but it's still not staying in Confused. I'm not sure if that would help you though katsnmouse because it's very rounded so won't help the palate. The mam ones are much flatter.

How did the Xmas meal bottle feeding go Merlin333? My DD has still not taken any more bottles, she has just been screaming and blank refuses. So it'll be a one drink Christmas for me this year Xmas Sad.

My DD has slept for almost 6 hours straight at night time the last few days-is anyone else's little one doing that? I woke her the first two nights to feed because I was scared she was going too long. Am I ok letting her go 6 hours without milk? She cluster feeds before bed.

She is still sleeping on my chest and not in her own crib but when I'm awake in the morning she's happy lying next to me in bed if she's on her side. I just keep an eye on her. When can I put her down in the crib on her side? I'm wondering if that could help the transition when she starts going back into the crib.

Nocta176 · 21/12/2015 11:44

dot - the 6-in-1 vaccine has the one that they get separately in the UK (I can't remember which one that is - meningitis?) rolled up into the one vaccine. Having Googled it, they use it in Ireland and Canada too (but on a different schedule!)

I was going to recommend the clear Tommee Tippee dummies - they're the ones we are using - although DD doesn't use it much, it does calm her down a bit when she's crying because she's tired or windy.

According to the book I've got, they apparently should feed every 4 hours until they weigh 5 kg or more - but DD regularly does between 5 to 7 hours at night, so I'm taking the approach that she'll let me know if she is hungry and that surely sleep is just as important as food for growth and development! And she's not far off 5 kg now anyway.

dotladotla · 23/12/2015 10:14

My DD must be almost 5kg so that's ok. She hasn't actually slept as long the last two nights so I obviously jinxed itHmm!
She took the dummy for a wee minute in Tesco yesterday so I managed to finish the shopping- trying to build it up. It's like climbing a blooming mountain!
I'm so excited about her first Christmas but at the same time a little aprehensive about so much going on and if it will put her all wrong. We're at my in-laws on Christmas Eve then also popping there on Christmas morning before heading to my parents until the 27th. It's going to be a busy house so my main priority will be trying to get her to nap. Fingers crossed Smile
