Is it worth taking an iron supplement red? Could be anaemia? xx

KitKat1985 · 09/01/2015 15:41

Oh and Jessica needs feeding and cuddling to sleep still. Anyone got any tips on help to teach a baby to self-settle? x

Inbl00m · 09/01/2015 15:44

Red do you have low blood pressure? I do generally so if I get dehydrated or something else makes it drop (standing up too fast, heat, aeroplanes) then I feel like that.

What's everyone's views on daytime napping in the same place as at night? I've read that putting them down in their cot for naps is good because they associate it with sleep, but am worried that dd might start to associate it with shorter naps rather than sleeping through. I don't want to jeopardise our good nights!

FATEdestiny · 09/01/2015 15:52

If you just let them feed whenever they want overnight do they just feed from the same side all night?

Shouldn't need to. But there will be one side that is easier than the other. Depends on your boobs. Mine are massive Blush. So if baby is on my left, baby can feed from left boob if I am lying on my back. Because the boob drops around to the side (lovely!). If I lie on my side, then my right boob is the 'top boob' and baby can feed.

Breastfeeding groups will def talk to you about this and have tips. We spent many hours talking about top boob and droopy boob when I was at my breastfeeding support group. I found baby got getter feed from 'top boob' (regardless of which side of me baby was) but I found co-sleeping better from 'droopy boob' with me on my back.

KitKat - I am not entirely sure you can teach a baby to self-settle. It just happens gradually over time. Full tummy and dummy in works for us.

I will see the doctor if it continues but tbh I thought it was a one off yesterday. I went to post a letter about 10 this morning and it struck me again after I got home. So it was too late to consider getting an appointment today anyway (not to mention getting there whilst I feel like this isn't exactly easy as driving wouldn't be the smartest move). DH will be around tomorrow so I'll see how I feel over the weekend.

I have some iron tablets left from when I was pregnant so I've had one of those to see if that helps.

I don't think its sleep deprivation, as although I'm pretty tired atm and in need of an early night, DS does sleep through and I'm actually sleeping better than when I was pregnant.

I'm starting to wonder if it could be viral, with DS vomiting so much yesterday and being so clingy. He's gone extra sleepy on me this afternoon. He's been asleep for 2 hrs now, after waking twice and going straight back to sleep. He only ever does 45mins during the day. Having said that, I feel completely fine otherwise. I'm quite thankful I stuck a DVD in the machine earlier now!

I hadn't thought of that. I don't think I generally have low blood pressure, but it does seem to be happening when I stand up. We have a home monitor somewhere so I might get DH to check it when he gets in.

I've read that putting them down in their cot for naps is good because they associate it with sleep, but am worried that dd might start to associate it with shorter naps rather than sleeping through.

That sounds like needlessly worrying about "a rod for your own back" far, far too soon. With my first born I came to realise that trying to avoid The Rod in fact created The Rod.

Bear in mind that your baby will be having daytime naps for a long time, through the baby years and into the toddler years. The reading you have done will be in relation to much older babies.

When you are down to just one lunchtime nap a day (from around 12 months old through to about 3 years old), then it would be important to ensure that is established as happening in a 'place for sleep' (ie cot) so that the sleep/place association develops.

Until our babies are about 6 months it is worth remembering that they are still tiny and young babies. They aren't making associations or bad habits yet. They just need their needs met. Baby needs to sleep - anywhere and anyhow. And full tummies - anyhow.

So if daytime sleeps in the cot works for you - it is convenient having baby in a dark, quiet room - then that is fine. But don't be doing it with any worry about The Rod.

Inbl00m · 09/01/2015 16:54

Phew, thanks Fate. Everyone goes on about 'The Rod' so much (especially mum and MIL) and I keep telling myself to totally ignore it but it can be hard...!

RedToothBrush · 09/01/2015 17:09

Fate I do have to say its helpful having someone on this thread who advocates 'anything for an easy life' at this stage. Its exactly what my thought process is!

Thank you fate

I'm a nursery nurse and some things are coming very easy to me but the sleeping through the night I have never experienced before so it's great to have all of your support through this unknown times.

When Elijah wakes at night he sometimes will self settLe, e.g I have gone to make a bottle and I come back and he is asleep. He usually falls asleep on the bottle at night and bottle or dummy during the day.

If I put him in the cot awake he will be fine for a while and then just start whining then get cross. If I give him a dummy at night or awake in a cot during the day he spits it out repeatedly. He is so fussy with his dummy!

A couple nights ago he woke at 1 and took 5 oz then woke at 3 so I cuddle him and he went back off.

Oooh another question can you still see/find your baby's soft spot?

RedToothBrush · 09/01/2015 18:32

How much would I LOVED one of these!!!

OP posts:
cookielove · 09/01/2015 18:37

red that baby looks freaked out

RedToothBrush · 09/01/2015 18:44

He was posing for the photo!

OP posts:
cookielove · 09/01/2015 19:06

Oh yes your right! Silly me Grin

FATEdestiny · 09/01/2015 19:23

That baby looks petrified!

Cookie, if you have ruled out other stuff and figured his reason for waking is hunger, then maybe getting more feeds in the day would stop hunger at night?

I can't feel/see DD soft spot anymore.

Red - I so wish I'd been more chilled out with my first, life would have been much easier. I worried about everything.

Honeybear30 · 09/01/2015 21:23

kitkat I'd just like to congratulate you on starting a 'discussion of the day'!!

Inbl00m · 09/01/2015 21:24

holls Yes! It's mad here, it feels like our house is going to blow down and the baby monitor keeps picking up the windGrin

Is anybody else moulting? My hair is falling out like crazy, I'll be bald before dd's first birthday!Shock

holls2000 · 09/01/2015 21:41

bloom me too it's really scaring me for some reason!!

KitKat1985 · 09/01/2015 21:47

Haha thank you honeybear! I only started it as a bit of a joke - didn't expect it to get picked as a discussion of the day! x

FATEdestiny · 09/01/2015 21:47

I love mega weather. None of this half-hearted "breeze" when you can have gale force wind. No "showers" when you could have torrential rain or overcast when you could have electrical storms.

If the kids are ever up when we have some extreme weather, we go out in it Grin

I saw kitkat's thread earlier. Didn't want to reply to it and seem like Mrs Knowitall with talk of getting organised in the mornings being easy and straight forward when you have school routines to deal with. It seems to have got a bit heated on the thread. I'll stay away for now I think.

FATEdestiny · 09/01/2015 21:48

Oh hello KitKat. Didn't mean to speak like you weren't here. I didn't see your post.

misog2000 · 09/01/2015 21:56

Yep I'm shedding everywhere! I wasn't sure if it was my lurgy or post preg so I guess that answers my question.

Emily has developed a habit of taking out her dummy with her hand when she's nearly asleep, then I have to persuade her to give it back cause she's crying! Contrary little bubba!

She is sleeping really well now, last feed at 10ish then DH does a dream feed on his way to work at 4.45, then she sleeps till about 9am.

I'm back to work on 26th so not long, I will miss Em loads but I'm also looking forward to being me again for a bit. I'm only going 3 days a week to start with and she's going to family all 3 days, so she will have a fab time. Anyone else back to work soon?

KitKat1985 · 09/01/2015 21:57

It was a x-post I think - we both just happened to post at pretty much the same time!

I also love a bit of extreme weather. Gutted that so far we haven't had any decent snow down south (I know this may not be a popular opinion with everyone)!
