Old thread here.

We seemed to be running out of space (again) so I made us a new thread.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
SoYo · 21/08/2013 20:19

Weaning is good fun WD! Mini-Yo has just had a load of spag Bol cut up & plonked onto her bit of the table & had a whale of a time with it. It's definitely not for the clean freaks though!

How are you both Eco?

KFFOREVER · 21/08/2013 20:46

eco glad to hear that they found nothing serious and that mini eco is being monitored.

Im off too zzzzz body cannot cope with 4am wake ups.

WingDefence · 21/08/2013 21:21

SoYo I did the usual spoon feeding with DS last time round and yes I'm not sure about the BLW mess!

We waited until DS was 6 months last time as he looooved his Aptamil but I may start a bit earlier with DD as I'm still BFing her (apart from one bottle of ff a day in the evening) and I think I'll probably stop when she is fully onto solids. But it makes my brain ache just thinking ahead!

KFF DD woke up twice last night at 1:30 and 4:20. Very unlike her and it made me feel sick with tiredness today. Hope she does better tonight and has one of her sleeping through nights and that mini-KFF sleeps better too.

ecofreckle · 21/08/2013 21:51

Hello again. Eco baby asleep and fed well. She's had a bit of a funny day. Yawning all day but fighting sleep. One minute crying and next grinning. After one and half hours of trying to get her to nap I gave up and drove to view a little life back carrier that I'd seen on gumtree. The drive did the trick for her And we got the carrier! Result.
Rest of day bit rubbish as was trying to prioritize lovely girl whilst trying to clean house, plan food and change beds. MIL was already as far as Suffolk so couldn't be put off. I even made a Jamie dinner early, before Dd's bath as they have all gone out now. The house is clean, quiet and all mine. I watched terrible tv and ate chocolate buttons.
Eco baby's temp was normal the one time I checked. HAve tried to resist being too paranoid. SHe seems well enough and is eating. Maybe tomorrow when she knows what time of day it is she'll be less erratic. Am tempted to sleep in nursery though.
Thank you for checking in on us. Sorry for the drama. It's nice to have you ladies around.
In bath now. Going to press on with baby led weaning book despite MIL exclaiming that she managed to fledge two good eaters without these modern ideas
Sweet dreams everyone.

WingDefence · 21/08/2013 22:05

Glad to hear your day was a relatively peaceful one eco :) Which BLW book are you reading?

ecofreckle · 21/08/2013 22:20

Gill rapley and tracey murkett. Also have their recipe book. Would you suggest any others wing?

Plonkysaurus · 21/08/2013 23:07

Oooh spag Bol SoYo? I think that'll be on our menu soon, we have mince in the fridge and I do love making sb. I'm going to try DS with some leftover roast chicken tomorrow.

wing I'm 50/50 purées and 'finger food'. I'm absolutely loving weaning, and just stick an old duvet cover (a relic from dp's uni days) under the highchair. Never read any books about it and ignored the health visitors silly food group chart. But the mango, apple and pear purée I made tother day is so yummy I've taken to having it myself with yoghurt Blush

Eco love the notion that blw is modern rubbish. The baby seems pretty happy to lick hummus from a pitta, and I'm certainly not going to spoon hummus into him Grin. Glad to heat all is well with your dd, and I think it's totally understandable to sleep in her room (unless you're on bare floor). I think you need some proper rest lady.

Now, tell me about this little life carrier.

LaLaLeni · 22/08/2013 00:02

Eco glad all is ok Shock

I'm still in new home chaos here, and it's extremely hot and noisy which is taking some getting used to.

My current list of baby achievements at 20 weeks is thus:

Rolling both ways and pushing up
Giggling when tickled or when anyone claps
Smiling but equally bursting into tears spontaneously
Fake coughing!
Smacking his heel down on the mattress when going to sleep
Touching mummy's face gently before smacking her in the eye
Toe sucking
Gorilla sitting
Funny whispery sounds and shouting
Banging things with hands
Putting hands straight down into poo whenever nappy is take off before grabbing the wipes out of my hand
Chewing my finger
Doing the dramatic back of hand to forehead when eating (glad others have this too)

No:
Crawling
Solids or purees yet
Sitting unaided
Sleeping through (getting worse if anything!)

KFFOREVER · 22/08/2013 03:35

wing we are on our second wake up and ive been up since 12ish. I cant sleep. Im going to be like a zombie tomorrow especially as ds wakes up 5/6am. So no lay in.

Re BLW. Im scared to try it but would love to it sounds fun and much easier than purees. DM has got it into me he will choke. I dont think they did blw in 80's.

Leni an impressive list. Moving is hard never mind with a 5month old baby so you are doing great. Seems like the obsession for willy has begun here too. Oh joy.

KFFOREVER · 22/08/2013 03:36

soyo hope you are fast asleep.

SoYo · 22/08/2013 03:38

No chance KFF, I'm here with you! 3rd wake up here but 2nd feed. I didn't get to sleep until gone 1 so I'm pretty sure I'll be a crazy woman tomorrow too.

pudtat · 22/08/2013 03:46

Hi ladies! First wake up and feed here too, must be growth spurt as not usually up this early but he's been fussy/ hungry / not hungry for past couple of days, having said that actually it's probably teeth...

pudtat · 22/08/2013 04:09

At 5m 1wk we have:

No full rolls, though he is the flippiest baby ever and I am sure is having to put more effort into holding the 3/4 on his side position than he would to just let gravity finish the job.
Supported sitting is good, eg on a lap or in bumbo.
Spontaneous smiling
Anticipation of events when certain games are played, songs sung etc
Giggling at tickles, having neck washed, mummy eating apples etc
Coughing - hadn't occurred to me it was fake but dh was convinced it was just another noise in his arsenal and you would seem to suggest he's right!
Great reaching, grabbing, passing from hand to hand to mouth etc.
Good head lift and raising on arms when on tummy now.
Problem solving - he has a toy which vibrates when you pull a string. He reaches to hold it if you hang onto the pull cord, but isn't string enough to do it himself, UNLESS he hangs on with both hands lying on one side and then flips to lying on the other side! I was very impressed by that one.
Grabbing backs of thighs during only pooey nappy changes and therefore causing mummy to have to develop 8 arms to stop hands from then going into mouth while still holding feet/bum up etc.
Reasonable sleep routines most of the time (obv not tonight...)

We don't have:
Rolling -see above
Sitting, even like a gorilla. His feet are too fascinating, so he starts to reach and grab at them which flops him forward... Cue getting stuck in a yoga pose face between his knees and crying.
Babbling which isn't just really cute gurgling.
Food. I haven't started weaning yet but the 2 occasions I passed him something off my plate to try cos he was reaching for them (banana and pepper) he sucked them briefly but showed no real sign of interest, so we will keep occasionally offering until 6 months when we'll start doing o more regularly.
Crawling - though can do good virtual swimming! Smile not sure he won't be a bum shuffler though, think the thought of not being able to see stuff might be off putting.

ecofreckle · 22/08/2013 04:18

We're awake too. Whole house must be after the wailing. Must be one of those nights. First in a while we've had 27 degrees.
Plonky the little life if a structured back pack carrier. Sun canopy and rain cover included. Suitable from six months so not tried it with Eco baby yet but will let you know when I do. Forty pounds second hand.
May the wake ups for you all cease and peace reign again.

ecofreckle · 22/08/2013 06:19

More feeding. Wonder if it's because she's poorly or because of a growth spurt. Is there a five month one? She goeS much longer than this in the day. And that's when she's using energy wriggling like a crazed thing. And to think just a few days ago she'd go 12 hours no problem! They keep us on our toes these babies.

WingDefence · 22/08/2013 08:27

Well we had two wakes at 1:30 (ARGH) and 4:20. Both times because DD rolled over and squished her face up against the bars of the cot (fed her after that one) and the second time she'd also got her arm trapped through the bars and that time I stubbornly didn't feed her and it took me about ten mins to get her back to sleep.

I can't be doing with feeding her twice a night!

We're off to Blackpool Sandcastle water park today with my DPs. Hopefully it'll knacker her out so much she won't have the energy to roll even in her sleep!

WingDefence · 22/08/2013 08:28

Oh and I'm having the coil fitted tonight (finally) but I'm really nervous about it. Anyone else had one? What can I expect? Thanks

KFFOREVER · 22/08/2013 08:43

It must have been a full moon outside as a few babies were up last night.

wing i had mirena coil fitted about 2 months agoish. No pain felt during fitting but had some cramps after and irregular bleeding which is very annoying. They say it takes up to 6months for the bleeding to regularise. Other than that ive had no problems.

ecofreckle · 22/08/2013 09:00

Wing, unsure if you had sweeps with either of your labours but soyo said coil fitting not as uncomfortable as that. I have my initial consultation for mine soon.
And as for rolling as an interim measure we have tightly rolled bath towels under sheet each side. That has worked for us.

SoYo · 22/08/2013 09:55

Oh my word. She went down at 8.30, up at 9 but down after quick cuddle, up at 12 for feed (I didn't get back to sleep until 1.30) up at 3 for feed until 4 then up at 5.10 & couldn't settle her so at 6 gave in & co slept where she just grazed on boob until 8 but wailed if the boob moved. I'm shattered & have woken up sweaty, achy and with a very sore throat. Boo! We were meant to be going on a trip to the seaside today but that's off now. All in all, not the best start to the day.

WingDefence · 22/08/2013 16:32

Blimey SoYo. Have you started weaning - could it be that?

eco and KF thanks for those words of advice. I haven't had a sweep but you've reminded me that at my consultation appt the dr told me to take two paracetamols beforehand so I must remember that.

I've gone for the non-hormonal coil so not the Mirena as I've been pill-free for 2.5yrs and also I've reacted badly to various pills in the past (migraines, depression, spots) so I don't want something I may react to and have to have removed.

Thanks for the rolling tip too eco. We did that when we took the sides off DS's cotbed to make it a bed but I didn't think of that for DD.

Hope you feel better soon SoYo.

SoYo · 22/08/2013 18:33

Ah thanks Wing. Feel much better. Managed a long, hot bath & a nap thanks to DH.

As for the coil fitting, I found the speculum a little uncomfortable just as I do for a smear bit barely felt the coil fitting & had minimal period pain & spotting. I always take 2 paracetamol & 2 ibuprofen 30mins before & take a sanitary towel with you so you don't end up with one of the hospital mattress ones!

I'm off out for dinner with friends this evening (don't really feel up for it but its taken an age to find a day we can all do) & as we're just going down the road I'm leaving DD for the first time! DH can always bring her down if all hell breaks loose. It means pushing her bedtime back which might not be well received but I need to leave her at some point for my sanity!

Rainbowbabyhope · 22/08/2013 18:43

soyo most of our nights have been like the one you describe since DD was 4 months old (and quite frequently before then too). She has never slept through but every night I go to bed hopeful that it will be the night! It's got to happen one day! The downside to this is that no one seems to understand how tired I am because I appear absolutely fine during the day so everyone assumes I have just got used to it! Hard to not to sound constantly moany by pointing out that I ache from tiredness most days. Tbh I am sad about this because I actually feel it takes away from my enjoyment of having a baby. So much so that I will definitely never have another (and am seriously considering sterilisation if DH decides he can't go through with it himself). Love DD to bits and wouldn't change her for anything but think I would have to be seriously unhinged to go through another bout of self-inflicted sleep deprivation like this ever again. I also hate it when people tell me I will 'forget' this and any bad bits - I don't tend to look back with rose tinted lenses!

On the other hand BLW is going brilliant here now. DD gets excited any time anyone has a plate in front of them and will literally eat anything! On the menu today was avocado and cashew pate on toast with peaches for breakfast, goats cheese, sundried tomato and artichoke pannini for lunch and ravioli, carrots, broccoli and plums for dinner (accompanied by some breastmilk in a doidy cup). I am amazed at her natural ability to handle food and we have had no gagging at all for over a week. VJ the way I handle concerns expressed regarding choking is to ask what age they think the risk goes away and why - no one has been able to really answer that because the truth is at some point babies have to develop food handling skills in their mouth and the relevant muscles - choking risk still exists at 9 months (and some argue more so because gag reflex moves further back in mouth). Tbh I was a bit sceptical about blw before starting and was preparing to do a mixture but seeing how well DD feeds herself means that it would be counter intuitive to now feed her ourselves. Plus my mum keeps going on and on about how I wouldn't eat lumps for years (she perversely uses this as an argument again blw) and seeing how DD chews and swallow chunks of bread and fruit already reassures me that we are unlikely to have that problem - plus I am too lazy to blend and puree for years!

Rainbowbabyhope · 22/08/2013 18:46

Sorry just realised it was kf who mentioned blw choking concerns from relatives - something I battle with constantly!

Anypants · 22/08/2013 18:57

Ah soyo - our lives become parallel once more. I too am leaving DD with DH for the evening while I go for a meal with the girls at the pub! First time i've done so since she was born so hope she doesn't play up for him (or do I? Grin )
Enjoy your evening and have a bit of time off - it's the least you deserve Wine Wine Wine
