Me too. Memories of DSB still raw too.

BabyGiraffes · 27/04/2013 10:25

Mous Hope your journey this weekend goes smoothly.

ClimbingPenguin · 27/04/2013 10:34

good luck mous

I have survived my first week at work. So far it nice, but I still don't know how to do anything. I can't MN from work like I used to, so one disadvantage of leaving academia Grin. I am liking the fact that none of the females (except a HR lady) wear make-up so don't feel under pressure on that front. Am enjoying wearing nice clothes.

I was quite knocked by the news too. Me and DH have now resumed conversations about wills and life insurance. It got put on hold as we couldn't agree about who would have the kids.

BabyGiraffes · 27/04/2013 14:15

CP Meant to ask how your first week went Smile. How have the children adapted to being back in nursery? Dd2 did a full week last week for various complicated reasons and she couldn't have been happier. So glad she is having a good time.

stoofadoof · 27/04/2013 14:56

glad to hear first week going well CP

safe travels mous

I too have been having a sob for family sotu :( terribly, terribly sad.

ClimbingPenguin · 27/04/2013 15:45

A mixed week for the childnre. Unfortunately they had to have a long day Monday (normal is 7 hours). They enjoyed it that day, but the next day DD realised it wasn't going to be just a one day a week experience, plus they were tired. Tues night DS came down with a 39.9 fever with DD following the day after. Her fever spikes were at night so she went to nursery, drugged up. Nursery are happy to have them if they respond to drugs and are happy in themselves, which DD was. They are also happy to dose them while there. DH had to take Wed off as I felt I couldn't in my first week, but it meant he had to cancel his 3 month probational meeting.

Next week DH is away just one afternoon/evening, so they will have a week of just 7 hour days.

InmaculadaConcepcion · 27/04/2013 20:28

Glad work went well CP, sorry to hear the DC have been poorly. I hope they're okay now xx

Yes Mous hope it goes well for you x

sotu thinking of you so much....

It seems a bit inappropriate in some ways, but I'll share anyway: we had a nice surprise today from DD (although, this week various things have been leading up to it...) - she basically did her first ever day perfectly potty/toilet trained, with only minimal encouragement from us. The initiative was hers, helped by the motivation of wanting a "big girl bed" and being told she can have one when she's doing all her wees/poos in the potty or toilet (because her friend got a proper bed when her parents realised she needed to be able to get herself out of it easily to use her potty first thing in the morning).

For the last ten days DD has been more and more business-like about doing her poos, although still insisting on wearing a nappy. But the last few days she's only worn a nappy to poo and has wanted knickers otherwise and been very good about using potty/toilet (including a few al fresco wees using the travel pot). Then today when we could see she was "getting the urge", DH asked her (as we always do) if she wanted to use the potty/toilet or have a nappy and she chose the toilet. In the past when she's done so, she's panicked and asked for a nappy, but today she just got on with it. Result!!

I'm not going to assume we're home and dry (arf!) yet, but it's hugely promising! I'm also not going to make the mistake of starting to scale down DD's medication just yet either. But if she continues in this way for a few more weeks, that's when I'll start reducing the sachets of Movicol.

In fact, DD is noticeably more confident in every way now - since the wind phobia was conquered, she's been much more cheery, energetic, obliging, adventurous (including trying new/previously refused foods), sociable and independent. I think it's a combination of getting over her anxieties about the wind and about nursery and the work they've been doing with her at the Montessori.

that must feel a relief IC

InmaculadaConcepcion · 27/04/2013 20:37

Definitely CP!

And incidentally, DD's swimming stuff arrived today. She was very excited and insisted on wearing her new goggles and arm bands in the bath.
We're going to do some prep stuff with her - playing "swimming" games etc. and perhaps take her and DS to a pool earlyish next Saturday. We'll see how it goes.

IC, great that your dd has made such progress, well done x

CO, glad your first working week has gone well.

Mous, hope your journey is going ok.

Survival, no words just hugs Thanks

Same to SB and LBH x

rainbowweaver · 27/04/2013 23:37

My first days at work after uni I remember I really struggled to stay awake after lunch, so you're doing brilliantly cp

Have just seen sotu's posts Sad still having trouble taking it in. But glad there's a lot of support rallying round.

StoneBaby · 28/04/2013 13:43

IC such a great news

CP I guess your kids may catch quite a few bugs as they'll be longer at nursery. Fx their immune system will cover them

ClimbingPenguin · 28/04/2013 14:20

A combination of Easter and staying at my mum's meant they have haven't been to a local playgroup in nearly 4 weeks, so I guess they lost their exposure to the local germs. They weren't too bad, but now I am very achy.

About to enjoy a nice bath with DD

BabyGiraffes · 28/04/2013 16:30

CP it sounds like you had a tough first week. I'm sure it will all settle down after a few weeks of your new routine.

I wonder what goes on in dd2's head when she dreams. She woke up shouting at 6.30 this morning and demanded to have chocolate and a duck (a real one). The mind boggles.

Hugs to anyone who could do with one...

ClimbingPenguin · 28/04/2013 16:58

well DD almost had a big tantrum last week because she wanted to be a pig, not a pretend pig that I tried to offer her. Grin

bg it was still loads easier than being at home with them full time.

maybe they might sleep through tonight [hopeful]

StoneBaby · 28/04/2013 19:00

DS woke up this week wanted to put his socks in his mouth. When I gave them to him he told me he wanted his small ones!! Result a massive meltdown when I told him we did only have normal ones!!

InmaculadaConcepcion · 28/04/2013 19:55

Ha ha ha at the toddler dreams!!

We hadn't decided to go for it quite this quickly, but semi-spontaneously decided to take DD swimming this morning - early, before the pool got busy. DS fell asleep in the car, so DH elected to stay there with him and tackle a pile of marking he had. DD was rather nervous in the changing room (but did use the potty before she was ready to go in the pool). She took one step into the pool then decided she wanted to get out again, but I brisked her into getting back in and was helped by an array of floating/squirty/pouring toys in the baby pool. These got DD interested and in the end we were in there for an hour - only sitting on the steps, but playing and laughing and splashing and DD was visibly getting more confident with it as time went on. In fact, she didn't want to get out and has been saying today that she wants to "jump in" now. So we'll take her for a few more early Sunday sessions and hopefully, little by little, she'll get her confidence up.

Bit of a setback with toilet/potty training today - DD was startled by her poo making a splash in the toilet (which splashed her bottom a bit) so went off the idea again. Damn. Hopefully it won't take her too long to get over it. Ah well. I've got mountains of pull-ups to use, I suddenly had visions of them being left stacked in the cupboard for 2 years until DS gets to that stage. At least they're more likely to be used....(trying to find silver lining...)

OP posts:
StoneBaby · 28/04/2013 20:46

IC great news on the swimming. I'm sure you could sell the pull-ups on NCT or ebay (or any local baby / toddlers groups); that's what I did with DS's

ScienceRocks · 28/04/2013 22:55

IC, good work on the swimming.

I have started dd2 at a swim class. It is at a local school that happens to have a teaching pool, so it is lovely and warm and she can stand all the way across. The teacher is great, and some of my friends have put their kids through her classes, so it feels right. DD2 loved it, beamed the whole time Grin Very proud of her.

My head has been full of survival's news all weekend (I was at a wedding on Friday, so didn't find out until Saturday morning) Sad If you are reading, survival, please feel my arm around your shoulder and know that you and your DSs are in my thoughts x

ClimbingPenguin · 29/04/2013 22:14

just checking in to send teamsurvival some well wishes.

hoping tonight DD will stop her run of 6 wakings.

BabyGiraffes · 30/04/2013 16:16

dd2 had a massive tantrum when I collected her from nursery. She wanted to go back in.... Hmm
