geekette it took me four days, and the midwives told me to spend at least half an hour in loo after morning shower, & breakfast, to relax and not strain. I had a maternity pad against stitches and was dosed up on lactulose for poo problems anyway Blush

ham yes, Minipop grunted groaned & strained solidly fur ages trying to poo & fart, think it's then learning to use muscles & bowels etc...

Congrats to new mummies, I have been having a bit of a nightmare with Minipop & his tummy, not helped by doctors overdosing him on ranitidine by nearly three times the amount Angry

hope you are all having a great bank holiday.

I have been Mummy-mattress for Minipop fur most of today, but he did just manage a 4 hour sleep Grin

hamncheese · 27/08/2012 07:10

I think the world knew DH was going back to work today as last night sandy only slept for 3 hours :( officially spending the day in bed!

susiegrapevine · 27/08/2012 09:52

Hey everyone ham you are right it does get better. Hoping jacob will settle into some sort of routine before dh goes back to work as I have ds1 and will have to rise from my bed no matter what once dh goes back! Jacob seems to be feeding roughly every 3 hrs at the moment so am getting some sleep but when he woke up at four this morn I could not get him to settle back for an hour and a half normally an hour has passed by the time he is changed and fed.

Poor ladies who have stiches to contend with. Going for a poo was not so bad for me this time but with my 1st even tho I had no stiches it still felt like everything was gonna fall out when I had my 1st poo but it was all fine just don't hold back if you need to go or you will get constipated and that's the worst!

Whoever was asking about latching my best tip is if it hurts too much (obviously it will hurt a little until your nipples harden) don't be afraid to take baby off your nipple, break the sucktion using a finger, and try again. Don't forget its always nose to nipple and make sure baby's belly is facing your belly. Hope this helps.

Hasn't even been a whole week for me but it feels like little jacob has been here much longer love him sooo much.

Oh yeah and his cord came off last night thank god it had been grossing me out for the last couple of days so glad its gone!

capecath · 27/08/2012 14:32

geek recommend dried apricots :)

DS2 is feeding like a dream. Looking back now, would have gotten more breastfeeding support with DS1 - didn't know it could be this easy! Would go with susie's tips. Am also thinking that it seems to vary so much from baby to baby - not doing anything differently but bf is so much easier this time!! Hang on there all, sleeping and feeding will get better, it really will...

hamncheese · 27/08/2012 15:49

Question... Are any of you using/have used with other DCs dummies? We never thought about it but resorted when he started getting colicky and all he wanted to do was feed but would come off after a minute over and over. I was worried it would confuse him or mess up feeding but it seems ok and really helps settle him to sleep. I feel kind of guilty for using it though for some reason...

Weighed today. Was 7lbs at birth now after 3 weeks 4 days... 9lbs 3oz!! Porky sandman :)

Going to try and get him to sleep now so I can nap, going out for dinner with him and DH for our anniversary tonight... I'm having rare steak!!

susiegrapevine · 27/08/2012 16:52

Well had jacob weighed after 6 days and they are supposed to loose weight but jacob has gained 2oz!! The midwife was very surprised! I have a very fat baby!

capecath · 27/08/2012 17:11

ham don't feel guilty about using a dummy if you decide to. Some babies just like to suck more than others and dummies really help with that. We used one with DS1 for a while, then started weaning him off it once it looked like he was becoming too dependant on it (about 9 months) for sleeping (he'd start crying when it fell out) and that wasn't as hard as you might expect either. They can be really helpful.

susie great! you must have magic milk :)

Loislane78 · 27/08/2012 17:34

ham i'm thinking about a dummy as LO likes to use my nips as one sometimes :). Only reason I haven't yet is waiting until we get desperate so I still have something up my sleeve to try :) Read about nipple confusion but equally lots of peeps say it worked for them.

Mine has started doing what Sandy does re. the straining/groaning, assumed trapped wind (? She's not good at burping) or just digestive system getting used to milk? Gave a little infacol last night as she seemed in pain, few large farts followed he he :)

Thanks for all the bf support on here, help to hear others tips/tricks :)

Loislane78 · 27/08/2012 17:36

PS - health visitor coming on Weds - what do they talk about? Do they weigh babies and stuff? Haven't seen a MW since Weds as was discharged so just wondering the difference.

The3Bears · 27/08/2012 18:41

Hi everyone, glad to hear all the LO's doing well.

Lois I have my hv coming on Thursday, from what I remember with ds1 they're very helpful let you know of any baby groups in the area, when the clinic is open to weigh LO and they talk about how your feeling and how LO is doing, Cant remember if they weigh LO or not.

Bf is still going well here Noah lost 2 1/2 oz on day 5 and by day 9 he had put on 7oz :)

ham Noah has started groaning and grunting when feeding but usually when he stretches his legs out etc so I think it's because of that, he does groan a bit when pooing aswell but doesnt seem to be in pain he just forces it all out very fast, the little monkey has poo'ed and wee'd on me lots already Grin
Does anyone else's LO who is bf spit up milk quite abit ds1 never did this but Noah seems to do it 1-3 times a day ? Wondering if my milk is too fast for him or something.

I have his tounge tie appt at hospital tomorrow and have been in tears about it today can't wait to have it over and done with but hate the thought of it hurting him :(

Also ham is the moby difficult to use by yourself and tie etc? Im thinking of getting one as Noah loves to be held close to me with his head on my chest to go asleep but I could do with having my hands back :)
Hope you have a nice annniversary dinner tonight aswell.

susiegrapevine · 27/08/2012 19:04

3bears my lo spits up milk a bit I think its when the milk comes out a bit too quick and he just gets rid of some out the side of his mouth while feeding if that's what you mean. If its after feedihg they can sometimes posset a bit of milk if there tummies aren't big enough to have that much so nothing to worry about tho I do feel wet a lot from all the milk everywhere!

ham do not feel guilty about a dummy as long as its not in there mouth constantly and is only for soothinf to sleep its fine. Its just if it is in there all the time it can hinder speech development and you should just take it away before they become too aware of it. Am resisting myself at the mo as baby seems to be very sucky but still only young and do not want to hinder bf. Instead I am using my little finger to settle him and he seems happy enough to suck on that when not hungry but needs to settle plus as soon as he is sleeping a can gently take it out.

Sorry being a bit of a thread hog!

hamncheese · 27/08/2012 19:53

Thanks re: dummies. We are just using it to send him off to sleep then he lets it drop out his mouth anyway. It's a bit of a security blanket for me too knowing its there incase he gets mega angry and isn't hungry. Also found he settled quite well in the bouncy chair on vibrate today.

bears sandy brings up milk a good few times a day. Sometimes is curdled which I think means it was sitting in tummy maybe with wind. If it is normal I think it can happen when the milk lets down and does all at once so is more a leak than vomit. The moby is fine to tie yourself once used to it. Don't be put off at first it is tricky but by the 3rd or 4th time you'll be used to it. Tie yourself but get DP help getting him in first few times. I can do it all myself perfectly now he's been in 6 times so it's quick to master. Proof of its worth... Heading out for dinner, he is fussy a bit crying, pop him in, by the time he is out the door he is settled, by the time we are at the restaurant he is sleeping and he slept through whole meal in the sling. I doubt we would have managed it without a crying episode in the restaurant without it!! Had My nice rare steak first time since last November! And plan for sushi on Thursday hehe x

The3Bears · 27/08/2012 21:25

Thanks susie and ham yes sometimes it's just milk which I know has just leaked from his mouth when my flow is too fast but sometimes it's abit curdled which I was abit worried about but perhaps I need to wind him more then.
Great news about the Moby aswell ham i'll order one from amazon and will get dp to help at first :)

MrGeresHamster · 27/08/2012 21:32

3Bears I'm having the same problem and I think it may be wind... I fed Minigere earlier and he threw up afterwards a lot of curdled milk. Soon after he was hungry again so I tried again. This time I winded him about 3 or 4 times during the feed (when there was a break) and held him upright for a while afterwards. So far he has kept it down and is fast asleep on daddy's chest.

capecath · 27/08/2012 22:10

3bears yeah I reckon it is just wind. LO tends to throw up a little when I burp him early on in the feed. I can hear him gulping down the milk and I think at the beginning it comes really fast and creates wind. I tends to resist going on the breast when he has wind until I burp him. Then appreciate muslins!! DS1 had major reflux issues and he threw up loads until 10 months... but then he was getting a bottle too so probably had more wind anyway.

tumblebug · 27/08/2012 23:09

Hi, looks like everyone's doing well and enjoying new babies! Sophie is nearly 5 days old now and is gorgeous, loads of dark hair - more like me (ds is really blond!). I keep wondering how she ever fitted inside me though! DS seems to like her but is still learning he has to be careful around her. When he saw me feeding her for the first time, he said 'I want to bite mummy' and sank his teeth into my shoulder!

does anyone know if a baby can poo too much? Sophie has had 2 huge poos (and another dirty nappy) in the last 2 days - about 10 minutes on the change mat and more just kept coming. is it possible i'm overfeeding her? feeding on demand, she's feeding really well about every 2 hours. Midwife is coming tomorrow, will ask her.

The3Bears · 28/08/2012 10:11

Tumblebug Noah was pooing alot around that time and still is really, it's because your milk is changing and there tummys adjusting to it. Nothing to worry about im feeding on demand aswell and you cant over feed a bf baby just follow there lead :)

Vinolover · 28/08/2012 11:31

Nice to see everyone is thoroughly enjoying their babies :) its such a lovely time!

William has a dummy ham and it didn't affect his latch at all, in fact even though he is ff now, he still latches on really well when I do give him a bf. I have read on a few occasions that dummies can help prevent cot death so I'm certainly happy to let him have one.

I have to say, tiredness has well and truly kicked in now! My house needs a really good clean but I could no more do the housework than fly in the air! I wouldn't change it for the world though :).

Hope everyone is having a lovely week.

Lovemarmite · 28/08/2012 13:47

Hi everyone, really glad to see you on the other side! Phew, wow and lots of wee! Just deciding on name but our little girl finally arrived on Sunday at 14.30, 8lbs 5 oz.

Wouldn't post birth details on the last group as maybe it wouldn't calm msnetters waiting! I managed to dilate from 1 to 4cms in a few hours, once in delivery suite, I decided not to have pain relief (dummy!) and was labouring before taking relief at 6 cms which happened quickly and I screamed to a point the doctor was called to talk me into pain relief. I was knackered and so took some epidural alternative that you use as a button trigger that stays in the system for just 5 minutes. Just laid down and got to 10cms. From there on it all went, hmm, interesting!
Just to say she was there and then somehow wriggled back up and went into a funny position. We had the top consultant with us and she was using forceps but she wasn't there and during cs they saw how she managed to breech. Apparently not a very normal thing to do! Strange thing though was that through out labouring I was complaining of being too tired and if it came to it, I didn't want forceps etc and wanted a cs but oddly at pushing phase I was less tired and she started to crown and then for LO to then disappear which then made it necessary for an emcs.
We've been given a private room in the hospital and termed as extraordinary! Hoping to go home tomorrow morning which will then make it a week since induction.

Now we're into feeding dilemmas and my bump is full of gas etc but can't moan as so excited she's with us at last!
Will read through some of your posts to see what's installed for us, and so glad to be with you now x

WelshLadyCDF · 28/08/2012 16:39

susie my LO's cord stump grossed me out it was like some dead slug, it's come off BUT I don't know where it is Shock !!!! that grosses me out even more!!!

MrsMigginslovespies · 28/08/2012 16:57

Hello all,

Finally got enough time and energy since coming home on Sunday to check in! Have been seriously emotional and overwhelmed with it all, whilst at the same time, so in love with Edward.

Congratulations love! So so happy for you, though the delivery does indeed sound extraordinary! Glad you're both ok now though and I hope recovering well.

Have had good aftercare from mws and feel well supported, esp on the bf side of things, as I've struggled a bit getting it established and was worried he wasn't getting enough despit constant feeding so had topped him up with formula and felt hideous about it. Better now milk has come in but it's been tough and at times scary knowing how responsible I am for this tiny person! Am currently expressing too to encourage more milk from baby's least favourite breast (anyone else have this?!) and it's really odd milking myself!! DH looked in fascinated horror just now!

Re dummies, I was super snobby against them to begin with, but E is a very sucky baby and they really do help him to settle, esp after feeding when he likes to use my nipple! My sister sneaked in some tiny MAM ones which are also orthodontically approved and they work very well! That's me told!

Now then. Stitches. Anyone else's suddenly very sore now they're healing? And apart from codeine and a pillow to sit on, any other top comfort tips? And is anyone else having night sweats?! Too lovely...

Wishing you all a good evening and lots of tiny baby cuddles Smile. x

Loislane78 · 28/08/2012 19:19

Yes here to night sweats too! What are they about, I guess all the extra fluid making its way out...? My feet were pretty swollen for a few days but nothing since so thought I'd escaped/wee'd it all out!

tumble lots of wet & poo nappies here, almost every change, so think it varies between babies but all action down there good I think

tumblebug · 28/08/2012 20:29

3bears and lois thanks for the reassurance, more manageable amounts today anyway. Think someone might have said to me when ds was little I fed him too much just to settle him, but I also remember thinking I wouldn't worry about it with another baby - if milk settles them, why fight it! He grew out of it, and seems ok now!!! Really am lucky she's feeding so well.

mrsmiggins the stitches - yes, ouch! The swelling and general pain is less, but the stitches really sting when I catch them or move or stretch. I'm still taking diclofenac, paracetamol also seems.to tale the edge off, but just hoping it keeps getting better!

MW was meant to come today, I was just told to be on, and she never arrived! I'm not worried about anything so don't really mind, but it would have been nice to go for a little walk or something.

raininginbaltimore · 28/08/2012 20:46

Can I join? I was on the first few antenatal threads, but lost track!

DD (my second dc) was born on 3rd August, 2 weeks early! Took us a bit by surprise. She likes to be in sling most of day, which means I can spend time with ds easily.

Stitches are ouch- I didn't have any this time, no tear either, but had an episiotomy with ds and remember the toilet hell. I cried in the first week because I couldn't poo!

MrsMigginslovespies · 28/08/2012 22:10

Glad not just me then a sweaty mess! And my feet are also still huge. Grr! About to go to bed for hopefully some time before the night time. I'd like to ask tomorrow about feeding as have a few questions, but for another day. Is anyone expressing yet?

I hate the stitches and bruising. SO uncomfy and sore.

Hope everyone has a good (!) night. x
