Thread 4 - that's one a month!

Exciting times coming though, GGF, and noone quite understands obsessiveness the way we do Wink

I want post an AIBU re: weaning but AIBU to be scared? DH and I are having a discussion about whether it's appropriate for M's first meal to contain a nice chunk of good steak.

OP posts:
Cyclebump · 06/09/2011 06:42

I'll have the fairy cakes! Grin

DairyBeetle · 06/09/2011 07:46

Sophie has been found! She decided to be an astrophysicist for the day, DH took her to work in his coat pocket, but she's back safe and sound (well being rammed into S's mouth and drooled on).

Frak I think M should have steak if that's what you're going to be having. It's probably quite a good first food actually as you can cut it into a nice shape for him to hold. Plus he's unlikely to be able to bite a chunk off so will just gum it into mush. Also, if he likes it, it could potentially keep him occupied for ages!

Buck Yr10 might be bad, but it could be worse...yr8?!

fraktious · 06/09/2011 08:20

Well we're going to start allowing him to grab at food as of x (as yet undecided) date. I think he'll go for it immediately and therefore we should be eating stuff he might like. Plus we eat quite a lot of steak because DH is a confirmed carnivore whereas I don't eat much meat, but prefer it to be good quality. I'm thinking a chunk of steak, a broccolipop and some carrot. Then we'll watch intently to see whether he goes for Mummy's rabbit food or Daddy's meat Grin

I'll swap your year 10s for my first year undergrads, buck. They're doing my head in. Slightly problematic because I'm not remotely qualified to teach science, given that my last exposure was at A-level (although I have studied scientific communication so can talk at length about perception of risk and public understanding of key issues if that helps?). I'm still not entirely sure how I passed, let alone with an A, but given yesterday I'm not entirely sure I wouldn't fare better with them than my mute first years. I'm storing up the rant for later though. First I need to break the back of this research project. Anyone fancy justifying my methodology? I'm at that awful stage where you suddenly doubt your entire approach and have visions of everything collapsing like a castle built on sand.

Frak purely based on experience with DS1, he was happy to gum steak but couldn't do much with it until he had a fair number of teeth. We used to hold onto the piece he had incase he tried to swallow it whole and choked.
We started with chicken, and then lamb which are both softer and come apart under gum-pressure Grin

T slept 8-8 with feeds at 12.30 and 5. I can cope with that, we feed lying down and he doesn't really wake up so will go straight back in his bed afterwards.

Cyclebump · 06/09/2011 08:32

Another night of 8.30-2 then 2-6. Awake for an hour then I had a birthday lie-in of 7-8. DP got H down with no problems last night too Smile

We're skintight but I'm hoping to make DP a cake for his birthday tomorrow.

I have no experience but steak sounds ok. Easily grippable and nicely suckable. Mmmmm steak.

Cyclebump · 06/09/2011 08:32

Skintight?! I meant skint...

Starshaped · 06/09/2011 08:53

I think I was asleep before before 12:30 last night. Whooop! I was awake for an hour or so between feeding P in the night but even so, I think I had more sleep last night than the last couple combined. Fingers crossed that there's light at the end of the tunnel and I can stop boring you all with my sleep obsession!

P had a good night too. She slept 7:30-8 with feeds at 10, 4:30 and 5:30. She probably didn't really need feeding the last time but it was easier to go with it.

Glad that the Sophie crisis has been solved Dairy. Your Sophie must have aspirations to be the Brian Cox of the giraffe world! I also second your shout about year 8s being worse than year 10. I'm not a teacher any more but do still have particularly dark thoughts about one class of nightmare 13 years olds!

JoEW · 06/09/2011 09:20

In other Sophie news, I had to confiscate C's due to 3am squeaking. He has decided Sophie is the toy he would like to cuddle in the night. Not the super soft 'bedtime bunny', bought specifically for that purpose. No, he likes the rubber giraffe.

Star, I am petrified about how organised I will need to be to get out the door for work. I feel as though I've had a pretty productive morning today - got up at 06.45, fed C, did washing up, put everything in the steriliser, put wash on, had shower, got dressed, gave C his meds, had breakfast and put him down for a nap. It's 09.15. I need to be able to get all that lot done (minus nap) by 08.15, so I have an hour to shave off my time before I'm ready. Time to get training.

Ooooh, advert for Strictly..... so excited. Such a guilty pleasure. I loved it when I was pregnant, I would Sky Plus it and save it till DH wasn't around to ruin my enjoyment by doing Brucey impressions and saying it was shit.

Time to poach a mango.

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 06/09/2011 10:35

Can't you just mash the mango Jo?

Happy birthday Cycle Smile

Ds has been dropped off at pre school and he was fine

I had 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep last night. I felt great when I woke up, but I bet I feel shite later Hmm

JoEW · 06/09/2011 10:44

I could, but C seems to like his food very smooth and runny and gags a bit on even small lumps so I give it a light poach just to make it really soft. I'm trying not to push him too much as he's only really 20 weeks and I guess it takes a while for them to get the hang of it at this age. BTW poached mango puree tastes bloody lovely. I might put some on some ice-cream later.

chillikat · 06/09/2011 10:48

Blimey JoEW, it's 10.30 and I've had breakfast, fed M, given her a massage and dressed her and just managed to get her to have a nap - on our bed rather than in the cot but she was getting in a right state. She seems to have developed a dislike for right boob again too so I might need the breast shells out again.

For some reason I'm thinking it'll be an easy routine going back to work Hmm even though I might be starting earlier. I'm not entirely sure how we're going to do it yet but I think DH might end up dropping her off at nursery - it's on they way to work for both of us. Of course by March we'll have to factor in proper breakfast not just BF...

Cycle hope you had a lovely birthday.

I think we're going to start properly on weaning at the weekend - I was asking the HV about it yesterday. I did mention the chilli cubes we have in the freezer to her and she told me about a mum who was trying different root vegetables and ended up giving her baby a puree of horseradish! Shock

chillikat · 06/09/2011 10:50

That should have said "it's 10.30 and all I've done is..."

fraktious · 06/09/2011 11:15

chilli won't nursery do breakfast?

  1. The last 500 words are always the worst...
OP posts:
Alibabaandthe80nappies · 06/09/2011 11:21

Blimey Frak, you are reminding me why I quit at one degree Grin

I just had a go at expressing, I need some EBM for Saturday because the bridesmaid dress I'm wearing doesn't allow for feeding. I will change for the reception, but we need to get through the ceremony and photos.
Got 5oz at first effort which I'm pleased about, it is more than I ever got when I was feeding DS1. Going to offer T a cup of it later and see what he makes of it

chillikat · 06/09/2011 12:12

Frak I hadn't thought of that, maybe they will. I'll check nearer the time. We're both so close to work here we tend not to leave the house til about 8.40!

Good luck with those last 500 words. I'm so pleased I finished studying a few years ago - you're giving me flashbacks of writing up my MA dissertation.

I had been hoping it was nap time here but it seems it's grinning at mummy and making funny noises time instead. I think even though the weather is grim we'll go for a walk this afternoon in the hope she falls asleep in the pram.

Well done on the expressing Ali - I haven't really given it a proper go but couldn't get anything the few times I tried even though the right will gush about an ounce into the breast shell without trying!

GlaikitFizzog · 06/09/2011 13:21

Well my supply is dwindling properly now. My one pump a day last night didn't even produce a full feed. Think It's time to hand back the hired pump and carry on with the Swing.

It's DH birthday later this month and I've been wracking my brains for ideas of what to get him. He is so hard to buy for! I was looking at weekends away, but that would be more for me than him!!

fraktious · 06/09/2011 13:52

Well I now have enough words. Need to read through to make sure it's coherent and then I can print and submit. Why oh why oh why did I think that working in academia was a good plan?

Any ideas what I can get the nanny for being such a star?

When I worked in a nursery we did breakfast so I assume they will, even if you need to leave a tad earlier it's better to let them get messy than you because of the associated clear up time and obligatory change of clothes.

GsyGacheFiend · 06/09/2011 14:37

My fifi bandana bibs arrived this morning, thanks for the recommendation ILTMI. They are sooo cute and lovely and soft.

DS happily settled into his new preschool class this morning, I on the other hand had to return 5 mins later as I'd dropped my car keys in his tray with his sunhat Blush.

Have been to Waitrose this morning (Heston ice cream now stashed away in freezer for emergencies) and P was as good as gold until of course we got to the checkouts where she had a scream fest. She calmed down once the car was moving, but started again everytime we had to stop at the traffic lights, luckily the shop is only 5mins from home. Have just given her a feed whilst watching an episode of "The Killing" it;s ideal as it's subtitled so I can have the volume low when she nods off and can just lounge on the couch with my cuddly sleeping baby.

frak If in doubt give Wine is my motto, if you're feeling really generous how about a massage/beauty treatment voucher.

Right better get ready to go and collect DS, it's pouring down with rain Sad

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 06/09/2011 16:22

Glad you like the bandana's, mine haven't arrived yet, and I'm only a few counties down from where they are despatched!

Can you do scan and shop at your Waitrose? I find that cuts the shopping time down by a lot. Previously it could only be used if you had a John Lewis card, but now you can register to do it with a debit card.

Ds was fine at pre school, I think the large selection of dinosaurs there helped.

Cyclebump · 06/09/2011 16:30

Can't believe so many people are already back at work or thinking about it. Feels like yesterday that we were all announcing the births. I'm back at music school on Saturday, am quite looking forward to it but am already stressing about expressing enough milk.

Hmmmm, fancy some Wine tonight.

Alibabaandthe80nappies · 06/09/2011 16:34

DS is back to pre-school tomorrow - yay! He's doing 4 sessions a week, and Wednesday is the only morning. Must do his packed lunch tonight I think otherwise I shall be in a panic.

T is sat on the sofa drinking his EBM from a cup/bottle thing with handles! So relieved that he will take it - even if he will only have an ounce or two a couple of times it will buy me a few hours of bridesmaiding in the right dress before I have to change and revert to being Mummy with a boob out :)

Frak is there anything that would help her integrate locally? Otherwise I think wine is an excellent suggestion - or perhaps a voucher towards a meal out or something?

Fizz - my DH is a nightmare to buy for too. I often resort to the boringness of clothes and get him a really nice jumper or something. Does he have any hobbies that have associated gadgets or anything?

Alibabaandthe80nappies · 06/09/2011 16:37

x-posts - ILike - glad DS was ok :)

Cycle - I am stressing about expressing enough for this Saturday. I looked at some pictures of T on my phone while I was doing it and that gave me a real proper letdown. I'm going to try again later, but I don't want to give myself mega-boobs, because then they won't fit in the dress. I already look like a tavern wench Hmm

Alibabaandthe80nappies · 06/09/2011 16:38

Gah pressed post too soon.

cycle - your DP can always give H a bit of babyrice or porridge and a drink of water if H has drunk all the milk you've left?

GsyGacheFiend · 06/09/2011 16:51

I know ILTMI I was very impressed how quickly they got to me, most places normally add extra delivery time for the Channel Islands, I'll definately recommend them to friends.

Yes, you can scan and shop at my Waitrose but I don't do it as if I have DS with me I'd never get the scanner off him and end up paying for everything several times. Also my mum works there and I had my first job as a Saturday girl 20 several years ago so I know lots of the staff/cashiers and they like to have a good coo and chat with the DC when I go in. Grin. I might sign up now that DS is at preschool more often though.

DS had a lovely time at preschool. (They also have dinosaurs Smile)

Cycle I know what you mean, I was thinking last night that this time last year I was in that 12 week keeping quiet about PG stage.

I might have some Wine tonight too, got a bottle with the Waitrose Deal for £10 this morning.

Right better move my backside and go and do tea for DS. P is napping and I've have been really lazy today and hardly done anything apart from the shopping Blush, might tell a little white lie to DH that P needed loads of attention today so I don't feel so guilty about doing F. All. Wink
