2many-So sorry to hear about your poor mum.I wish her well.
Re:gluten free diets,I do know a fair amount because of my IBS.I'm also a member of Allergy uk,so I get quite a lot of gumph from them too.
Like Trib said,it sometimes also isn't a good idea to exclude foods completely as that can sometimes cause problems too.
Even though I am intollerant to loads,I don't come out in rashes or have breathing difficulties if I eat something I shouldn't-I get a dodgy tummy and have to be near the toliet, which isn't too much fun.
I think I am going to try Ds in the next couple of weeks with something like toast to see if he does have the same problems as me.If I don't try it then I wont know and I would like to know as soon as poss if there are going to be any problems.

Btw...I managed to get a white shirt, from Next.Don't know why I didn't think of there in the first place.

Morning all

2many - sorry to hear about your mum, hope ds manages to take her mind off of it. What rotten timing.

Katz so you're a boxing day babe! I have a friend whose also a boxing day one - he's nominated a day in October to have an official birthday (like HRH) so he can celebrate 'his' day before all the festivities

Trib - oooh yup Frida was always my fav too!

EYM - great tips/advice there

Bubb - I was gonna suggest Next too! They do fab formal stuff don't they. Bet Oscar will look very dandy in his new outfit, if we could ever get the pics back on Yahoo I'd insist you post one of him

KVG - lucky you to only just had the first explosive nappy episode! I think my dd could enter that event for the olympics

Right better go and rescue dd from ds who has decided that he will get her dressed today - lots of giggles coming from the other room atm but as he only has his clothes to hand I bet I find some spiderman pants over her head or something!

Take care Junies, catch up later, x

katzglitterytree · 15/12/2005 09:02

yep - boxing day, i love it, i guess its because i've never known any different, also when i was little mum and dad used to make a huge fuss, christmas stopped it was my day and i generally did better pressie wise than my siblings becuase most people though ahhh poor katz having to have her birthday then and bought me more!!! plus i didn't have to save my birthday money to go with my christmas money i got it all together and always had more to spend in the sales. plus the choice for presents is better too. so all in all i love it!!

DD2 is back at the childrens hospital tomorrow to have her rash diagnosed.

i went to work yesterday for a few hours which was strange, just did some paperwork and organising, can't wait to start back properly!

Okey doke, here's a link to EYM's nursery tips.

2many, I guess if you're not used to excluding gluten from your own diet it must seem quite difficult to think how to do it for babes. (I would struggle to include it for my ds, of course, as everything we eat as standard is gluten-free, about from these mini Jaffa Cakes I am noshing on now). It does mean cooking from scratch, as many pre-prepared things have wheat in, and reading all the labels in the supermarket, but Tesco and Sainsburys particularly have excellent food labelling so it's a lot easier than it used to be.

I would guess for an under-one, the difficulty would be finding alternatives to bread and pasta. Pasta is easy, Sains and Tesco do wheat-free pasta which is okay, you just have to be careful not to overcook it as it's made out of rice and sort of disintegrates at a moment's notice! They also do wheat-free bread but generally it's pretty yuk. We just don't really eat bread, have rice salads and things like that for lunch instead. I think babies like to chew on breadsticks? I guess the gluten-free rusks Bubb found would be a good alternative to that, or rice cakes.

It's really just a question of changing your mindset to think about what's in the food you're eating - I've asked friends when they introduced wheat for their kids and they've looked at me like "what?" and then had to think what has wheat in .. completely different world from my ultra-careful lifestyle!

Bubb, I think the point about waiting to introduce dodgy foods is to give their little tummies a chance to mature and cope better with it if they do hav a problem. So I would wait if I were you, although your ds is a pretty robust little chap!

Oh yes and 2many, sorry to hear about your mum, what a shame.

godd morning junies

lack of sleep getting to me,dd usually goes back to sleep fairly soon after waking up but last night she was awake and clearly miserable from 1.30 to 4am then up again at 5.30. thankfully dh took over then.

rest not promoted by nightmare in which i was rushed to hospital with baby about to pop
-no it cant be my baby just over 6marrgh!
still had to check belly upon waking up, its huge but, thankfully flacid, never thought i'd say that

question- do you tell your dd&ds about father christmas/ santa? somehow it never occured to me that i would, but dh insists its a must of childhood, really?

tried rice cakes on dd yesterday she stared at it for ages and kept moving from hand to hand, considering everything goes into her mouth within seconds it was strange

  • you mean this is food? ( cant blame her) she did eventually chew on it for a while but still with a suspicious look on her face

giddy- that is nasty! sorry no useful advice hope its very temporary

2many- your poor mum, wishing her a speedy recovery

katz- hope rash gets sorted out surely someone must know what it is

eym- that all sounds like good advice and you clearly have solid good practice

hope you all have a good day junies

walkinginawelshmumwonderland · 15/12/2005 11:22

Morning ladies,
Penblwydd Hapus i Tea, Penblwydd Hapus i Tea, Penblwydd Hapus i Te-ea, Penblwydd Hapus i Tea.
Hope it was a good one - knowing you it was
Giddy - glad things are better in your household. Unfortunately/fortunately have no experience of Farmer's as both my babies seemed to like growing as far up my body as possible - lots of advice about late pg rib ache available.
2many - sorry to hear about your mum - hope she's feeling ok in herself.
Baubleoo - glad to hear about your's - what a relief.
Trib - wish I'd been there for your comedy fall. On the 'why' questions if I'm in the right mood I'll expand the answer into a whole complicated story. 'Once upon a time there was a big mountain dividing two towns and the only way to get from on to the other was over the top until one day someone had a clever idea...etc etc'
SFX - lol at the 'baby roadies' all my packing is driven by the aim of taking as little as possible. I'm keen to get rid of stuff too - as soon as I think ds is finished with something it's out of the house.
All our babies sound so sweet with their various tricks and developing personalities.
Ds has recently mastered growling and he now loves to make these lion cub noises, he loves singing - dd sings 'wind the bobbin' and tries to get him to do the actions.
He's really moving around now - not crawling but wriggling and rolling - he can progress quite far on his tummy. Unfortunately he's doing it in his cot at night and he doesn't like ending up on his stomach, he needs to sort it out for himself though all he'll get reliant on me to keep turning him over. Sigh - he was up for an hour last night roaming around his cot and moaning about his lot.
My other headache is schools for dd so your opinion please. Do I send dd to the small C of E school with a great reputation but a good half hour's walk away from our house. We can't drive her there, the bus would be a horribly cramped and it's too far for her to walk there and back.
OR
To the up and coming much bigger primary round the corner which had a fabulous offsted?

Welshie does a creeping U-turn....actually after dd was born by c-section I had the usual fear of number 2 production and the fennel tea I was on for bfing really helped moving everything along easily IYKWIM

SKYLERtnightholynight · 15/12/2005 13:25

Hi ladies,
I am checking on on you.
Happy Birthday Tea.
Giddy - Hope something helps soon.
Bauble - Great news about your Mum
2happy - Sorry to hear of your Mums accident. Wishing her a speedy recovery.
I am too tired for any more as poor dd2 has been up every 1-2 hours for the past few nights growing more teeth. She now has SIX and so understandably has been a bit grumpy. The Calpol hasn't helped her so she has needed me each time she wakes so I am very tired........
My dd1 loved Rice cakes. Organix do apple and orange and curry ones as well as plain and she would eat them loads. That and the breadsticks Trib mentioned. Actually she still loves Breadsticks now.
Right byeee ladies.

eastyorksmum · 15/12/2005 13:43

hiya im back again

took william to clinic this morning to get him weighed he only weighs 14 1/2 pound, and so in 3 weeks he has only gained 1/2 pound HV couldnt understand it neither can I, i mean he is very very active all the time, and hes grown 3cms and im feeding him rice ect, she wasnt to bothered said wed check in 3 weeks time i think its her scales.

Our william is very long, but you think because we starting the baby rice, weaning ect he would weigh more?
any one got any ideas or suggestions why?

baubleloo · 15/12/2005 14:06

EYM-Oscar's weight has also slowed down since he's been having "food",although he weighs about 20lbs!It might be because he's having less milk.He now only has 4 bottles, instead of the 5 he was having.I wouldn't worry too much if your HV wasn't concerned-you might find he's gained loads when you take him next.

SKYLERtnightholynight · 15/12/2005 14:09

EYM - Am positive this is nothing to worry about at all esp if he is so active. He is just burning more calories, but I just wanted to add that there are more calories/fat in breastmilk/formula relative to its volume than any food you may be weaning on. Completley normal if you ask me .

SKYLERtnightholynight · 15/12/2005 14:11

I mean the slowing weight gain is completely normal. It is still a gain and he has grown 3 cm in length! Sounds fab to me .
My HV have never done the length thing.......

eastyorksmum · 15/12/2005 16:34

Aw thanks for all the reassurance, things go through your mind so fast, when you think your baby isnt gaining weight silly really i mean daddy is 6 foot 1
and our william is commado crawling now over us, lol he also like hubby said is putting on muscle as hes so strong.

Skyler hugsssss lovely to see you hunny

sounds like your making the most of christmas there
big hugs for your girlsxxxxxxxxx

Cratchit · 15/12/2005 18:22

Madly crimbo shopping, but now lurking with baby asleep on lap (ashamed) and typing one-handed.

Giddy i used witchazel just dabbed on with cottonwool and so does dh who suffers and even though he's manflu tastic now swears by it.

So sorry about various mums... my dad was really, really ill just before ds was born, all v stressful and sure its one reason why ds was early. At least the ds/dd's lift the spirits when times are tough.

Our weaning gone pear-shaped, forgive the pun. Ds very mis tummy-wise, ooops, think its reflux but off to docs tomorrow to check.Cut all solids for thre days and no real difference. What next?

Dug out all my xmas cds - frank, bing, nat, dean, and cambridge carol service.. yippee feeling so crimbly now!

Today ds loving xmas twinkly lights and giggling a lot just because he likes the noise i think - enchanting.

teabelly · 15/12/2005 19:03

Evening ladies

Cratchit - fab image of your ds giggling away at twinkling lights bless

Giddy - well I'll shout it out loud I GET PILES ALL THE TIME!!!! Side effect of ibs and severe constipation for years water fab tip, drink loads until you feel you'll burst, also nice hot bath helps and I use a herbal remedy called 'zam-buk' not alot of help as my little bro sends it from Aus, but I believe some of the health food shops and poss some chemists over here are now getting it too...will see if I can source some for you incase you need some in future. Also try and wait until you really need to go - don't strain if at all poss.

Welshie - thanks very much for the welsh rendition - I've never been 'sung' to in another language - feel very privileged Hmmmn schools...C of E may be good, and if dd will go on a buggy board then ok now, but at some point she'll be too old for that and 1/2 hour walk could be just too long - if you think so then I guess only option is to go for nearer school???

SFX - lol at dd's reaction to rice cakes - totally understandable, what a clever little girl you have there

Skyler - blimey 6 teeth, my dd's yet to get any, dribbling for england with rosy red cheeks but will probably be like ds and just about have 2 come her first birthday!

EYM - as other's have said don't worry about low weight gain, it will slow more when you start with veggies as they have less calories still, but as ds builds up his food quantity he'll soon gain again. At least you don't have an arm breaker there, I had dd weighed today and she's 20lb and 7oz and you don't want to be carrying that around for too long believe me!

tribpot · 15/12/2005 19:29

Evening ladies, just a quicky. Have found out today that my friend with cervical cancer (who got through a v difficult but fertility saving op two weeks ago) has been diagnosed with endometriosis and the only two options are radiotherapy or a hysterectomy. So basically it's game over for her trying for kids AND she now has to face another major op or radiotherapy which I am sure is even worse. Much tonight.

Cratchit-Glad to "see" your'e getting into the christmas spirit with the cd's.
I've been watching VH1 and the other music channels-they've been really christmassy!

Skyler-6 teeth already!!!!!!!!!!!

Trib-So sorry to hear more bad news about your friend. That's really sad.

MrsChristmasDay · 15/12/2005 21:56

Oh Trib, how terribly for your friend.

Giddy, have you had a look on the pregnancy topic? I'm sure there are some good tips on there.

EYM, can my DSs come to your nursery?

Skyler, does your DD2 take a bottle? Any chance your DH could take over a couple of feeds so you could get some sleep? You must be running on empty at the moment. Six teeth already! The only consolation is you're getting this out of the way now I suppose (not that much of a consolation really, I know, sorry).

EYM, I've had the same with DS2, not putting on much weight between weigh-ins. It seemed to happen when he had a cold. Not sure whether that would be the case with your DS?

Trib, sorry for sniggering but your falling over story was very funny.

2happy, your poor mum. Hope she recovers very quickly.

Baubaloo, have been known to watch a bit of VH1. I did switch over when I realised I was watching a Cliff Richard special the other day though.

Snowfall, if your DD doesn't like rice cakes I'll have them - DS2 is very much enjoying his apple ones.

Welshie, DS2 is a bit of a night-time traveller too - I've found him at the other end of his cot, on his tummy. On the school thing, my gut reaction would be to go with the one that's nearer but I'm all for trying to make life as easy as possible.

KVG, you are blessed to have only had one explosive nappy incident. DS2 seems to save up his biggest poos for when we leave the house (he did one when I was out shopping yesterday and it went through his vest and his trousers).

Well Christmas has finally arrived in the Wednesday household - got two trees up and a lot of presents bought. Have gone for fake this year, the needles last year drove me mad. I feel quite strange doing the whole Santa thing with DS2 - in a stupid way I feel like I'm lying to him. I'm sure on Christmas Eve I'll be as excited as him though, leaving a mince pie out for Santa and some like for the reindeer.

Hope you all have a good night's sleep.x
