MrsCD, little girl's parents were much more patient/knowledgeable than I was, and replied "because when you're on a train, sometimes it goes through tunnels and sometimes over bridges, do you remember?" Masterful I thought. Obv many more "why" questions followed but they had cleverly opened up the discussion to more general points about train travel. Also she informed the entire carriage that the train was Gordon (off Thomas the Tank Engine?) but the conductor (a bloke) was a woman because she liked ladies but not men.

Ouch about your cleaner, I swear the pavements here are lethal. In fact I have to go to work tomorrow morning and am planning a lift to the station solely to avoid walking downhill! Did I tell you about my epic falling over and having to walk on hands and knees story?

3 year old nursery care, is it 12 hours per week? (My littlest niece has just started aged 3). Obv nursery care not such an issue for us as the purpose of having them close together would be to maximise the time we are both at home with them.

Obviously toast makes me go ARRRGGGHHH but that's just my reaction to anything weaningy that has wheat in Rice cakes I may consider in the coming weeks!

Evening ladies

Well 2Many - ds jumped on the computer and got 323 so I went off in a huff...how can toddlers know so much about technology?? it's bad enough he can work the video, dvd and digital camera better than me, and now this!

Trib - pmsl at '"whaddya mean 'why?' - we're on a train, the train track goes through a tunnel, ergo train must go through tunnel". I can see I am not going to be very good when we reach the 'why' phase' he he he - don't worry you'll have loads of opportunity to get good at it, believe me btw 'why do you think?' whenever possible as an answer very often wards off the inevitable follow on question of 'why'!

Mrs CD - you get 5 x 2 1/2 hour sessions paid for with childcare/nursery once they're 3 but must be a registered nursery/childminder (registered to accept nursery vouchers that is) so not a fixed amount per child, as all nurseries and child minders vary in charges. Not sure if they have to be going 5 days to get the full amount or not, but am asking that very question tomorrow of the new job so will find out and let you know.

Trib, weaning - with ds advice was not to introduce a new food for 2-3 days after another new food I think, but this time around the HV said not so important if weaning after/around 6 months as babe's tummy more mature...but I still left a few days between trying new things...think personally a couple of weeks is too long - they'd be a year before they had a good range of food in there Also was told to wait a while longer (month or two longer than normal) if introducing foods known to be a problem for immediate family members...that won't help of course with dh's intolerances. So e.g. wheat/gluten can be introduced at 6 months, but for your ds you may want to wait until he's nearer 8 months. For my dd it's my meat/fish protein problem - she's gonna have to wait until best part of a year for fish and 8 months for most meat, but I feel happier that way. HTH

SFX - lol at 'baby roadies' - how true!

Welshie - so glad you're a princess too! Kids and their own particular fears - don't you just love them?

Right best get some shut eye ... unlike most on here my dd suddenly thinks 3 - 4.30am is play time and resolutely refuses to go back to sleep until she's ready - ho hum, opinionated women, must come from dh's side of the family!!!!

teabelly · 14/12/2005 10:00

Oh no one around yet?

Oh well will sing to myself...happy birthday to me, happy birthday to me, happy birthday dear teabelly happy birthday to me you'll all be very pleased you couldn't hear me then - completely tone deaf mummy here! never forget the first time ds looked at me horrified when I sang him a nursery rhyme for the first time!

am in an inordinantley (sp?)(is that a word?) good mood today, dd didn't have play time last night, yippee (did cheat and have her in our bed though ) and have booked boxing day lunch at the pub so no cooking here over xmas (at mum's xmas day) have a girlie p*ss up...sorry lunch today and pressies to look forward to tonight...oooh I lurve this time of year

Hope you all have a good day too

baubleloo · 14/12/2005 10:55

Happy birthday Tea.
Enjoy your lunch today. Are you doing something nice tonight also?
We've booked lunch in a pub(carvery)for Christmas day so really looking forward to that and no washing up.It'll be the first time I haven't had a housefull, although they're all coming back to ours afterwards and everyone's over on Boxing day.No rest for the wicked eh?.

MrsChristmasDay · 14/12/2005 11:12

Happy birthday to yooooooo, happy birthday to yoooooooooo, happy birthday dear Teee-eeeeeeeeee, happy birthday to you.

I'm also a terrible singer - DS1 has been known to tell me to 'stop singing mummy'. I will have the last laugh though, he's definitely inherited my singing voice

Hope you have a lovely day.

Trib, am intrigued by the falling over story...do tell!

Good point about the wheat. Obviously you are much more aware of these things than me. Perhaps I should just stick to rice cakes for the time being?

Hi Baubaloo. How many people are you having to yours over Christmas? I'm escaping all festive duties by going to my sister's for the day, lovely!

Uwilalalala (great name). Good to see you again. Did you ever hear anything from Megi?

Just me and DS2 today so we are venturing out to do some Christmas shopping and meeting DH for lunch. DS2 is currently having a very happy time lying on the settee chewing on the remote control and singing to himself so I do feel a bit mean spoiling his fun by dragging him out the house.

tribpot · 14/12/2005 12:45

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TEA! 21 again, well done you, and getting a decent kip must have helped as well! Let's hope dd doesn't reserve this as a birthday treat only.

MrsCD, you know I am insanely paranoid about ds' food, it's just my thing. So certainly there'll be no toast for him for a while, but your ds is 6 months now, isn't he? So toast should be fine for him.

Ds actually likes my singing, is this a sign that I am gifted, or that he has no musical ability whatsoever? If the latter, we are in trouble as MIL is a musician and expects ds to carry on the family tradition. Ds' favourite is my rendition of the Mission Impossible theme tune, I have no idea why (or even why I tried this out on him really, must have been subconscious!). He thinks that's hilarious. Also he likes the song I made up for his teddy to sing to him, even though it barely has a tune. For some reason he likes me pretending to be the teddy, even though he can clearly see that it is me and not the teddy at all.

Falling over - was walking up a sloped pavement and realised I was actually sliding backwards like I was on roller skates. Dropped down to the ground to avoid falling flat on my face, and then realised I couldn't get up again, so had to crawl on my hands and knees up the slope to a flat bit in order to get up. All the while, cars and buses are going by, god knows what they thought I was doing.

Trib-lol at the falling over.I'm usually good at doing things like that.
MrsCD-there's 10 of us over Christmas,so that'll be really nice.It is alot of work though so at least I can relax abit over Christmas lunch!
Giddy-Sorry to hear Jess is still unwell.

WE went to the mum and toddler xmas party yesterday which was nice.Oscar met Santa for the first time and got a lovely cloth book which he loves!
Also ordered a great outfit from the USA which came today. It's for xmas day and is a little suit complete with waistcoat and bow tie but the shirt is a bit tight.
Does anyone know where I'll be able to get a plain white shirt from?
I phoned Mothercare and they don't have any and I've asked over in the "wanted" section,so I 'm hoping someone will come up with one. It'll be a shame if he doesn't wear it-its so cute.

My mum finally got all the results of her biopsies yesterday and it's good news. She doesn't have anything life threatening and won't need a hysterectomy after all.

snowfallatxmasmum · 14/12/2005 15:16

afternoon all just came back from buying mince pies - they are very very tasty i am glad to report

happy birthday tea - have a lovely time

trib - sorry hope you not hurt but its just so funny

bubb - so glad about your mother, what a relief

giddy - hope jess gets better soon

skyler - good luck with weaning
i am yet to introduce finger foods have absolut horror of choking, stupid i now, and i am a trained first aider and so is dh.

must dash dd nap long long overdue

baubleloo · 14/12/2005 16:05

Snowfall-I'm trying the finger foods at the mo and its not going to well.
Ds loves his mush and has been having fruit and veg for about the last 7 weeks and its gone so well,so thought I'd try other things-lol!
I've tried sliced apple and pear which he refuses to hold and I bought some gluten free, reduced sugar rusks which he also wont hold.I dont think he likes the texture of the harder foods...or more than likely he's just not ready yet for finger foods.

Trib-I'm also a bit worried as to what to gave him as I've got intollerances to wheat, gluten, yeast, ginger,I'm borderline with dairy and a few strange other ones too.Hopefully he wont have the problems I do...especially as I'm the one changing his nappies, lol.

eastyorksmum · 14/12/2005 17:08

evening mums hugssssss

lol finally wrote my thread for nurseries and it wont post typical

eastyorksmum · 14/12/2005 17:17

right i have been asenior nursery nurse nad baby room supervisor looking after babies for the past 4 years.

I just wanted to give you mums some guidelines to help to choose the right nursery to meet your childs needs.

First you need to ask the apropraite questions such as staff ratio it should be 1 to 3 in the baby room, and also you can ask if the room has any students working there onplacement.

You need to ask how feeds (bottle) will be warmed up it should always be by a bottle warmer no microwaves.

you need to ask if their is any planning you can see where it will tell you what your baby/child will be doing all day

ie gross motor skills ......large pull along toys ect

creative skilss......... collage/painting

Saftey is very important in a baby room, so you need to see where your baby will be sleeping, and also feeding ie high chairs.

ou need to see where and how bottles are stored? and how they are marked for the individual baby.

Their should be some notification of allergies that the babys have in the room either notice baord ot other.

the room should be bright and cheerful and lots of room for baby to crawl around in.

Basically i think parrents should be listened too, and all needs should be met by the individual child, communicatin is paraamount.

You also need to see some kind of report saying what your baby has done today maybe be brief but if gives you an idea.

you also need to ask about accidents, and how they are dealt with, their should always be an incident book.

the same with medication, you need to know how and whom will be adminstered it.

teabelly · 14/12/2005 17:29

Afternoon ladies

Thanks for all the birthday wishes...am having a very good day, aided by a glass or three of wine at lunch time, hic

Trib - oh sorry to laugh but have that odd squad card in my mind - the one where he's clinging to the building, which turns out to be the pavement - will only make sense if you spend hour chosing cards like I do and so know all the available selection! Also very funny about the mission impossible theme, have an image of you in my head dancing 'david brent' style to preoccupy ds no idea why david brent, but can't get the image out of my head, he he he!

Bubb - fantastic news about your mum - yeah! >

Giddy - poor dd (and you) - mine's bit poorly too here's hoping they're both well again soon

right best go - dh has just pulled in and I don't want him to catch me on the pc yet again, I'm sure he thinks I do nothing else all day

eastyorksmum · 14/12/2005 17:30

well heres just a few points for you lovely mums i hope this helps you, Ive got to say i ran lovely baby rooms all my babies in every room also had an idividual profiles where i would should how that individual baby would be meeting his/her milestones and these i updated every month.
I worked very closely with mums and dads and supported them in every way.

eastyorksmum · 14/12/2005 17:35

sorry had to do the stupid thing like that lol

Hey Tea hunny HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU have a lovely nite

Im going to join ya with a galss of wine or two myself tonite xxxxxxxx

tribpot · 14/12/2005 18:06

EYM, do you want me to post your nursery comments in a new thread? (Not that I have special MN powers but as an IT professional I pride myself on my ability to do links and whatnot!) Still, all good advice, if I was putting ds in nursery I would definitely want to know that his environment was going to be tailored to him, and sensitive to what he needs. I must say, it must be a bloody nightmare running a baby room, esp with 1 carer to 3 little monsters, how do you manage to keep them all happy at the same time? Imagine having triplets, good god.

Anyway, glad you all found my falling over story amusing, I am perfectly fine so take all the amusement you want, particularly you giddy with the being up with dd2 all night.

Bubb - great news about your mum, phew! As to white shirt, any of the online stores any good? If not, how about M&S, BhS...

Re: food intolerances, I am basically just going with the 'no wheat or dairy before 8 months' approach. I prob won't introduce meat before then either, as I do want to take the food introduction slowly (although as you say, Tea, a few days per food, not two flipping weeks a la Baby Whisperer). FWIW, I reckon ds would eat a rusk (gluten free, natch, as my MIL would hunt me down and kill me if I offered him a wheaty one, she is convinced that dh's probs stem from being given wheat from 3-4 months). He would just suck on it til it was gone. If your ds doesn't seem keen, I would keep to the fruit & veg purees for now, I guess you can make them progressively more lumpy?

I'd just make sure you introduce new stuff slowly, so you can see what effect it's having on his little tummy.

Interestingly (well, if you like that sort of thing) there was a study recently that for the children of Coeliacs it seemed to be just as bad to delay introducing wheat beyond 7 months as it was to introduce it before 6 months. Here it is (Actually it says before 4 months, tsk tsk!)

Tea - I do dance about like a fool to amuse ds, must re-watch The Office to see if I am imitating David Brent. I sincerely hope not, my usual role model is Frida out of ABBA (She was a bit of a groover in her day, probably still is). Also I'm a bit fan of Strictly Come Dancing, so have been treating ds to some choice moves in the last few weeks, as you can imagine.

eastyorksmum · 14/12/2005 21:31

awwwww ues trib that would be lovely thanks xxxxxx

I havnt worked as a baby rom superervisor, since last june when i found out my mum had secondary cancer i became her main carer but i do miss the baby room and probably will go back to work running one and taking william with me. God help my students lol

lol my other nursery nurse friends friends used to frighten my students by saying not gishstarpos room lmaoooo running joke.

Well i must admit, i expect the very best care, and dedication from my students but i always help them with discuusions their assignments ect observations i think it was good that they had a role model with high standards babies deserve the best.

2manyglassesofmulledwine · 14/12/2005 21:58

Tea - happy birthday! Hope you had a lovely day. EYM - thanks, really great advice you posted there. So sorry to hear about your mother, I didn't know
Trib/Bauble - do you know lots about gluten-free diets? dh's brother had coeliac disease, so I'm supposed not to introduce gluten until ds 1 year old and don't know a lot about the alternatives.
Bauble - great news about your Mum, v pleased for you both

Not a great day here, I'm afraid. My mother had an accident, broken a bone in her leg and possibly a couple of ribs and had to get stitches on her hands. Am going to spend next few days looking after her - pays back for all the babysitting in the last 6 months! ds'll cheer her up though. Oh, and as far as finger foods are concerned - tried a bit of cucmber today but ds was so fast with his sharp little teeth that he had a huge chunk off in seconds, what a fright! Off to bed now, ds starting to wake up earlier every day!
