Liking maternity leave too much? Can't be arsed to go back to your old job? Why not get made redundant, set up a company, have another baybee or even fall off a horse? Anything to spend more time with our little darlings! And it's so naice here - pass the gin!

x post. Sounds like some craptastic red wine you had there Box

With you on the joys of baby-proofing Muse. Think I may need to re-pot the weeping fig into something with higher sides. Getting mightily bored of repeating no every 15 seconds...

Glad Curly is feeling better.

Backinthebox · 13/08/2011 11:33

Muser, the ones on the Babyhawk website have always worked out cheaper for me than any that I have found on a UK site. The prices are in dollars. I have 2 minkee lined carriers, they are lovely! Console yourself that they hold their value really well on Ebay. And I am glad someone loves their Babyhawk - I was getting worried I'd recommended them and people were struggling with them. They just take a bit of practice.

Crap-bloody-tastic wine indeed. I am never drinking again.

I think she just needed to get a bit bigger for me to feel comfortable with it Box. Now I don't have to froggy her legs it seems to work a lot better. And is much less hot to wear than my stretchy. I'm looking forward to trying a back carry when she's a bit bigger.

And now you're going to send me back to the Babyhawk website. I just can't decide on colours.

Muser · 13/08/2011 12:48

So, I'm thinking charcoal straps, silver minkee liner, and this pattern for the main bit. Although I'd quite like one with cherry straps as that would be very autumnal. And the shipping is much cheaper than I expected. Roll on pay day.

Muser · 13/08/2011 12:49

Warning, that link will resize your browser due to ANNOYINGNESS.

rocketleaf · 13/08/2011 12:54

link worked fine for me. Liking your work muse very emo hawk. :o so what are the benefits compared to a wrap style? Is it just the heat factor? I like my Kari me but it's a bit of a pita to get on and a bit sweaty!!

box must have been a dodgy bottle? Good excuse for a fry up no? I had a hang over at 4am after to very small proseccos and two ports I dread to think what would happen if I actually drank 'properly'

Backinthebox · 13/08/2011 13:08

I think that pattern would work really well. The black cavaleras would work with a cherry strap. My most recently purchased Babyhawk has little brown owls on a turquoise background on one side and green, yellow and brown stripes on the other, with expresso straps. It took me, like, for eva to chose though.

Beef Monster Munch seem to be helping me today. Later on I am going swimming with TT. A good dunking always helps, and now I have my cast off the world is my oyster again.

It's just a different sort of sling really rocket. I find it very comfy to use and easy to put on. It's more straightforward than a stretchy because you're not wrapping it round you. You just tie two straps at your waist, pop baby in and tie two straps crossed around you. It's less bulky to wear than a stretchy.

Downsides for me is you can't just pop the baby in and out at will like I can with my Kari-me. This means I have to try and persuade the small one to stay in it on the bus, or I have to try and get off the bus without tripping over the straps and retie. And if I've taken her out in a cafe and taken the sling completely off I have to find somewhere to put her while I retie the waist. That can be tricky with a baby who rolls but can't sit up reliably yet.

Those a minor issues though and just mean I have a think about what I'm doing before I decide which sling to use. I did successfully retie my Babyhawk on a moving train last week. And usually having less fabric wins over everything else. Especially as I often end up taking the stretchy off now as I get too hot to leave it on all day when out and not carrying.

Plus, the Babyhawk comes in many pretty colours and fabrics and you can have a pocket put in it!

rocketleaf · 13/08/2011 14:04

I have just been looking at the website, they are very very pretty (ours of fun) But I know you use a sling all the time. I am not sure I have used the kari me enough to justify buying a different one. But then maybe if it were easier to put on I might use it more. Hmm. I might wait til autumn see if I use the kari me more when it gets cooler and then if so could be a good pressie to request from TB.

Backinthebox · 13/08/2011 14:14

Go and have a look at the FB videos - I did one of me doing a front carry and a back carry to show you how to do it!

OP posts:
Muser · 13/08/2011 14:43

When I get a second one I'd be happy to lend you my current one for a week if you like rockers. I think it's good to try before you buy. If you're not going to use a sling much it's a lot of money to spend. Although I use a pram more then I used to, I still use a sling most days. I hate taking the pram on public transport or if I'm going out for lunch with other people.

My new plan is to sell the Ergo that I don't use and was meant to be for TBG but he has shown no interest in. I should get enough from the Ergo to buy a pretty Babyhawk with. And I think pretty slings are important as they are part of my outfit after all.

Lighttaperstandback · 13/08/2011 16:52

Might I just butt into this sling convo? Had used a Close Baby carrier all the time when Squib was smaller, but the prob with it now is that it doesn't support his head any more so he can't really nap in it if I'm en route somewhere (or I would have to use one hand to hold his head the whole time). Is the Mei Tai better for a 9 month old baby in that respect? Looks like it might be, but hard to judge baby age from pics. Last time I had to cross London I used the MacPac, which he could sleep in. Trouble was it meant I had to stand an hour and a half each way with a heavy baby (in heavy backpack) on my back.

rocketleaf · 13/08/2011 18:11

You make it look bloody easy box I bet it isn't! Thanks muse that's really kind of you! May take you up on that. I went to look for a second hand one on eBay and there aren't any but there are loads of mai tais on there for about £20. So apart from the prettier colours what is it about the babyhawk that is worth 3 x that? I thought I could get a cheap one and see if the general concept works then invest in a minkee babyhawk for winter perhaps.

Went up the shops with the Kari me earlier. Shes fine once she's asleep but was quite wingey before that. Not practical unless I am going for a long walk which sends her off. So the mai tai might be better for chores round the house as it doesn't look as constricting. Not sure if it's just a question if getting her used to it as haven't put her in it for a week or so.

rollerbaby · 13/08/2011 18:16

Box hope your hangover recovered. My MS ramped up today and feel like vomitting all day.

Muser · 13/08/2011 18:18

Funnily enough rocket I have just been lurking around on a sling website to see what mei tais were recommended and there were lots of warnings about the £20 Ebay ones. Apparently they're put together on the cheap and there was a lot of doubt as to whether they were actually well-sewn enough to support a baby. What you're getting with a Babyhawk is the knowledge that it's been well made and isn't going to rip half way down the high street and dump your baby on the ground.

Lights Box is a better bet for your question than me. The head support on the Babyhawk works fine for my 6 month old. But my baby normally sleeps with her head against me so she doesn't need much head support. Sometimes she gets a bit lolling when she's in her Kari-me but I figure if it was that uncomfortable she'd wake up. Or be upset when she woke up, and she never is.

CurlyCasper · 13/08/2011 18:19

sorry sprocket, I didn't make it into town today, so your gear won't leave here till start of next week.

My body aches from last night's vomming and now my nose is streaming. i am not impressed. On a brighter note, my clother order arrived and I am now the proud owner of jeans in the size I have been aiming for throughout weightloss. Well chuffed.

pol I suffer from sheet drenching sweats from time to time anyway. Soaking during last night's episode. So I'm afraid I can't pin it down to the ADs.

CurlyCasper · 13/08/2011 18:20

posted too soon.

nice Sil revelation pol!

squeaks has spent the last hour walking around the livingroom. if only I was so easily amused.

okiecokie · 13/08/2011 19:57

I walked around the park for 2 hours today with Peppa on my back in the Babyhawk. She loved it. It still is a bit of a faff getting her up there but Mr C was on hand to help. She is well supported and giggles a lot. However, next time the hair will go up as she yanked many a clump out of it. To be honest I am only starting to really get use out of it now as I didn't get on with it in froggy position and now her legs are longer it is much better.

Moo boo to sickness. I am sure a nice long hair appt will help Wink

rocketleaf · 13/08/2011 20:27

Cripes! muse doesn't really bear thinking about! Babyhawk all the way then.

No worries curli just whenever you can.

Bloody knackered. Supposed to be watch His Highness this evening. I just want to go to bed.

SilverSky · 13/08/2011 21:06

pol think many options re Reading. Will need to see if childcare (usual story) avail otherwise no can do. Sad

honey Grrr to vomsville.

box huzzah for leg.

My brain has failed and can't remember any more so sorry if not namechecked.

I too am shattered after family day out and now disappointed that feck all on telly. To commiserate I'm having a G&T out of a can and a banana split for pud. I am SO living the dream right now. Hmm

FannyPriceless · 13/08/2011 22:41

pols MrP and I have one question. How could one pig feed 100 people with appetites the size of ours?Grin Seriously, I don't think you'll have any problem with leftovers.

And like curls, I can't find a causal link between my sweaty episodes and the ADs. I don't think I sweat any more than I did before. Sorry, I realise this is prolly not that helpful!

box Yay for freedom from the plaster. No more plastic bags wrapped around your leg when you have a shower! (Disclaimer: it's 10 years since I had a plaster so not sure if this still applies. What with modern technology etc.)

silv I am in awe of your glamourous lifestyle.

The house viewing was great. We had to drag the kids away from playing in the garden. The tenants in the house have kids the same age as ours and are looking for another rental property when they move out. Weirdly we suggested our current rental place and everyone went 'Oh - that's brilliant.' Would that be too weird?

Backinthebox · 13/08/2011 23:09

FP you can get a thing called a Lim-bo made of neoprene for putting on your plaster. OH said that £15 was far too expensive for something I would only get 4 weeks wear out of and I had to use bin bags instead. (Please to bear in mind he would think nothing of paying £15 for a bottle of wine which would be lucky to see 4 hrs, let alone 4 weeks!)

Lights I haven't put LG in a Babyhawk for about 7 weeks, for obvious reasons, so I can't remember if it gives him decent head support or not. He sleeps with his head forward against me if he is sleeping in it. If you need a bigger one they do a Toddlerhawk which is a bigger size.

Rocket the Babyhawk is really well made and the straps are secure. The cheap Ebay ones are a bit more of a gamble! As has been pointed out, you just don't see many used ones on Ebay, and they keep their value well when they do.

I feel I should do a video, when my leg is fully better, of me putting TT in a Babyhawk, just to show you can even carry a larger than average 4 yo in one! I should be on commission Grin.

OP posts:
okiecokie · 14/08/2011 09:46

I can probably see it possible to get a toddler in one however carrying that weight around for any length of time would be a killer non?

Lighttaperstandback · 14/08/2011 10:08

I might give Squib another try in the Close before I give up on it. I had been using a cheapo mothercare baby bjorn imitator in the last 3 months or so since it got hotter - gave more head support and was a bit less material to swealter in, but he's now out grown it. He sleeps on my chest, but, shall we say, my bosom may not be sufficiently ample to provide the nice horizontal pillow that the ideal sleeping position might dictate aka two fried eggs, which means it lolls around a bit.

Have arranged to meet a friend for sushi in a few weeks time...can I give squib a bit to try? I'm sure Japanese babies get raw fish from an early age...don't remember seeing it on any banned lists...at least not in big red letters like the apparent evil that are strawberries and honey.

MadameBoo · 14/08/2011 10:45

I used my Ergo last week with 3 1/2 year old Smallboo. That thing is worth it's weight in saffron I tell you.
