Does anyone else find this a bit scary? Or is it a good idea?

I'm just wondering what kinds of vacancies they are.

GetOrfMoiLand · 30/06/2010 11:18

I don't think it is a bad idea to suggest moving to get work.

I relocated purely for work reasons - I lived in an area with no industry and few jobs (north Devon). I had a job in Devon but was going nowehere fast and it was poorly paid (very low salary levels in that area).

I moved to Gloucestershire. It was a difficult undertaking - it was just me and DD and we didn't know anyone in Cheltenham. She had to move schools at 10. But I moved and added on thousands in salary, moved to a nice area, got dd in a good school. I was in private rented accommodation at the time, so had to save for the deposit, month's rent on new place, fund tenants fees and everything, plus pay to move. But it CAN be done, and sometimes it can be a good move.

Was good for me - my old place in Devon closed down last year, and I would have been one of many looking for a job in a place with no industry and where most of the work is seasonal.

I think movement should be encouraged.

I do, as well, Getorf, speaking as someone who's had to relocate many times with dh's job.

If you treat it as a bit of an adventure it can be a very enjoyable experience.

We were however fortunate to always have all expenses paid by dh's company, even down to new school uniforms, allowances for decoration etc.

It's a not unpleasant experience when you have plenty of money to pay others to move your stuff and things like decoration allowance and new school uniforms.

We moved like that loads for my dad's job and I don't think it's really fair to compare such an experience to someone moving on a pittance with next to nothing and then a job at the other end.

Also, there's no guarantee of a home with this scheme. Just a jump to the top of the housing queue.

What do you do with all your stuff in the meantime?

You do realise that most council homes do not come with white goods, floor coverings, window covering, light fixtures. This one had not a single shelf in it.

Imagine how expensive all that is, particularly if you have no decoration allowance.

I mean, c'mon. That's just downright mean to compare moving with a huge relocation package for a great job with good remuneration to temporary accommodation/homeless b&b and FA not even a job yet.

expatinscotland · 30/06/2010 13:50

sorry, a job hunt at the other end.

mumblechum · 30/06/2010 14:00

Expat, I think Get orf and I had wandered off on our own little digression there.

I agree with your post.

expatinscotland · 30/06/2010 14:07

We had a ball being relocated, mumble!

Even my mother, especially because it was all to places where lots of hired help is the norm, too .

But seriously, her year in Dubai courtesy of Shell Oil wasn't exactly a hardship .

mumblechum · 30/06/2010 14:18

I know a few pple in the oil industry and am always about their fab relocations to Venezuela etc.

DH recently confessed to having being headhunted a few yrs ago for CIO of a v big company based in Barbados. He didn't mention it. Aaaargh

expatinscotland · 30/06/2010 14:37

Yep, we lived in Venezuela .

Also Singapore and the Hague.

My dad also went on his own for shorter periods to other places.

I tried but it didn't work in Chrome so I gave up ;) Don't worry about it.

So, we should have a wandering workforce going where the "market" decides is next right for exploitation. What about people's broader family and support networks? Community? Any sense of belonging somewhere? These financial crises are not created by ordinary people, they are caused by a bunch of coke fuelled pricks gambling on an unregulated stock market. Unemployment is an outcome of this irresponsible and unbridlled greed. We should be demanding an economic system which has a moral dimension instead of kow towing to the ludicrous suggestions of Ian Duncan Smith et al!
