Hogshead - the mainstay of the voluntary sector, in terms of management committee, fundraising and service provision, used to be SAHMs with older children. Now that most mums are back to work to pay the mortgage the sector relies on retired people, with the odd young person looking to add to their CV.
As to the child minding aspect it is huge. Both my older DGC will take up their free nursery places at end of August. Both have the same time slot 9.15 to 11.45 - how on earth are working parents expected to do the drop offs and pick ups? Both have been for a trial session and DDs report that 80% of the adults there were GPs.
Our particular, still unresolved, difficulty is that our two will attend different schools in different towns (5 busy miles apart) but require drop off/pick up at exactly the same, strictly enforced, times. We both drive but have only one car!
