www.mumsnet.com/Talk/politics/970878-Radical-changes-to-benefits

but now with news last night david making life changing cuts to benefits, pay and work I am very worried.I am sure they gonna have me on the streets. I been looking for jobs there no jobs. knowone going to employ me when I am 26 weeks pregnant and a 4 year old to look after. stress is not the word. all this stress I couldn't sleep last night I just want to cry. dreading budget day xxx

Why don't you just wait and see what they say on budget day before you start worrying? It's never normally as bad as you thing it is, I doubt very much that anyone will be 'on the streets'.

whomovedmychocolate · 08/06/2010 11:33

You don't actually know you have anything to worry about yet. Please try and get some sleep today, things look worse on no-sleep than anything.

mummylou85 · 08/06/2010 11:37

I will try not worry. easier said then done.I just read that massive thread on daves cuts will be deep and hurt. thanks for replies. guess we all in the dark until budget day

Threads are just people's opinions and speculation. I think the cuts will be painful, extra tax on alcohol/cigarettes/petrol, reduced child tax credit/child benefit for people earning over 50k, cuts in the education budget. In all honesty, the spending of the Labour government was never sustainable but no one is going to be left destitute and living in a cardboard box. Your children will not starve, there will be a school for them and you will have a hospital where you will have your baby.

Have a bath, relax, get some sleep.

whomovedmychocolate · 08/06/2010 11:45

Indeed. Which reminds me, must buy wine now!!!!

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 08/06/2010 11:46

Wine, I will stock up the supplies ASAP.

whomovedmychocolate · 08/06/2010 11:47

I reckon in three month's we'll have both 20% VAT on booze and a minimum price per unit of alcohol so it may be a plan!

ilovemydogandMrObama · 08/06/2010 11:51

My theory, absolutely not based on anything, is that the PM is trying to prepare people, so when some things are cut, people will think, 'gosh, that's not so bad, was expecting worse...'

Easy targets: gas, alcohol, cigarettes, rise in VAT, CTF, pregnancy grants.

Although when I rule the world, will penalize those who miss GP/hospital appointments.

whomovedmychocolate · 08/06/2010 11:53

I will not only penalize them, but make them give blood when they do show up!

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 08/06/2010 11:53

Yup. Wine does well in a cool, dark place. Champagne goes off after 12 months, wine lasts for years and years, just make sure it's on it's side.

I imagine the hike in petrol prices will encourage people to car share more so this will be better for the environment.

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 08/06/2010 11:54

That's a good plan.

Chil1234 · 08/06/2010 11:57

Don't worry mummylou85. Cameron has repeatedly said in speeches words to the effect of 'those in genuine need will be taken care of'. Which means you because you are in genuine need of financial support. Cuts will affect public services, people working in the public sector (pay freezes, job losses) and those people in receipt of benefits who could work or who already have a reasonable income. Working people, companies and investors will be asked to pay more tax and we'll probably have to pay more duty on things like petrol, booze and consumer goods (VAT)

You won't be on the streets but you will make yourself ill if you only imagine the worst. Get some sleep

mummylou85 · 08/06/2010 12:12

Ok thank you. I will try relax. well the healthy eating grant is a waste of money so that can go as far as I am concerned. I not applied for it even though I am 26 weeks I wont see my midwife until july 1st and no doubt it be cut by then.

OP posts:
Chil1234 · 08/06/2010 12:34

Apply for the grant. If you've watched any budgets in the past what you'll find is that increases in duty (petrol, alcohol etc) usually happen immediately - hence why people queue up at petrol stations to get the pre-budget prices. BUT.... changes to taxation, benefits and other things that people need time to prepare for usually start at the next financial year ie. April 2011

The Child Trust Fund is a good example. It's going but changes will only come into effect next year. If your child is due in September, he/she will still qualify for the money.

Tip for life..... work with reality and facts rather than following every rumour and getting the wrong end of the stick. You'll miss out if you don't do things like applying for money that you are entitled to.... just because you think it might be cut.

mummylou85 · 08/06/2010 12:37

I think after august 1st any baby born the child trust fund goes down from £250 to £50, I was shocked at that thought it be axed totally. I think jan it be gone totally. I was just saying if they need to cut something I would rather that and child trust fund. xxx

and thank you everyone xxx

Ds was born in 1999, we didn't get a child trust fund voucher, a great deal of families have managed for many years without it, it won't be a big loss.

mummylou85 · 08/06/2010 12:45

no i know I think child trust fund is a waste of time. my little girl was born in 2005 and every year it goes down. it's waste time. so when I am in better financial situation I can hopefully fingers crossed save when they are older. I would rather loose that then anything else xxx

I agree belled- ds1 / ds2 don't have them; ds3's as a disablec child will be no doubt costed against his care anyway so is dead money; ds4- why? What does he need the others won't have?

Mummylou we're also on benefits (high level tax credits maionly) unavoidably (redundancy and a carer) and i;ve been scared by the media 'ooh it's gonna be scary' stuff: so much so I actually and somewhat embarassingly semi-woke after a nigtmare on the topic came downstairs and rattled off emails to senior miniters that whilt I knew budget cuts were happening, what benefit did they think was gained by scaring the life out of people who can't change anything? Figures and sums I can work with, rumours I cannot.

Somehow the expected men in white coats failed to materialise but I am somewhat mollified to see I am not the only one scared, even if I do wish I could stop it for you

mummylou85 · 10/06/2010 11:32

thank you for reply it makes me feel better I am not the only one scared too
