I've been hearing this all day on the radio. I can't take the suspense any longer. They are going to affect the lives of 'every one of us'

I feel like a person wincing and clenching my teeth in anticipation of the big fuck-off needle the school nurse is wielding, and I'm next in the queue....

Come on then, what's it going to be?

agree wholeheartedly Riven - we only have to look at govt IT outsourcing for an object lesson in how to waste billions of pounds for a crap service.....

'Are e still paying the US back for the war? (WW2). We could tell them to shove that debt.'

That was paid off a few years ago.

And if you start getting that attitude of telling your creditors to 'shove that debt'/defaulting, you get some serious problems (Greece, anyone?).

Or is that just reserved for the US as usual?

southeastastra · 08/06/2010 09:02

he will use this too to sell off royal mail, they can't wait to do that.

expatinscotland · 08/06/2010 09:04

Oh, yes, south, our LibDem MP is all on board with that, even though it's going to mean higher postal prices for his entire consituency because the first thing a private post system will do is scrap uniform pricing.

Can't wait to see him lose his job in 5 years.

Make too many cuts and there won't be any economic recovery. They are playing a dangerous game. They could take a longer view, wait for a bit of a recovery and then see.

Instead of bleating about the public sector which has been squeezed for years, yes they should be targeting the banking sector - who DID contribute to the mess we are in. There is also the issue of millions of unpaid business taxes in this country - are they targeting those companies.

As for unemployment - typical Tory tactic. Cheaper to keep people on the dole than it is to subsidise or maintain jobs. That's why Thatcher was happy with 4m unemployed.

This lot are pathetic - too shit scared to raise taxation, even a tiny amount which would decrease the deficit and be far less painful than cutting the public sector etc which inevitably will hit the poorest first.

If you are well off, you will be untouched by this. You won't miss your CB or tax credits (cos you probably didn't gt them!), do you use Surestart or free nursery places or even the NHS. No. Taxation remains untouched so the Tory voters feel comfortable and unaffected. It' s patheticc.

5% cut per year for 4 years on public sector pay and all benefits across the board.
Tobin tax on banks. Spilt all banks into retail and investment arms.
Increase in council tax for family homes with low occupancy ie 1/2 people living in homes 3 bedrooms or more.
Super VAT (25%)on expensive luxury items.

I honestly can't see the necessity of continually telling us all how much this is going to hurt. It certainly won't make it hurt any less and it's making me sick with worry in the meantime. Is he some kind of sadist?

fifitot you're dead right on unemployment under the tories. Everything I'm hearing makes me think the tories still believe high unemployment is a price worth paying for a healthy economy. Makes me spit.

TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 08/06/2010 09:27

No ones going to but an ugly thing like buck house though

Also gives them a nice whipping boy to use as a wag the dog scapgoat.

Those dole-scrounging, workshy losers! It's all their fault because they are too lazy to get on their bikes.

They're an easy target.

ElenorRigby · 08/06/2010 09:32

Nope Gordon Brown is the bloody sadist, he and his NuLabour cronies.
NEVER forget Liam Byrnes smug note to his predessor "there's no money left, good luck" BASTARDS!!

Same as '79 Labour bankrupted the country then and left the Conservatives to clean up the mess.

and no I have never voted Conservative.. but I absolutely believe this coalition is the only hope of pulling the country out of the mire.

Dunkirk spirit people...this aint going to be nice

fifitot · 08/06/2010 09:39

Did the Tories clean up the mess then? I seem to remember them destroying every last vestige of manufacturing in this country and creating a benefits culture that is so entrenched now we hardly notice it. Yes they did pretty well............

"Too much cutting of childcare vouchers/CTC will take women out of the workplace and surely that will slow any economic recovery"

but that's what they want. Women out of the workplace, more men in work and less women on benefits because they can't claim them, at least not those in a live-in relationship or married.

Good old fashioned family 'values' where women stay at home to care for children and men earn the money.

nymphadora · 08/06/2010 10:23

Haven't seen it on here but I was wondering what would happen if the Inland revenue called in all the taxes owed by the Football clubs ? Surely the Govt should be calling in debts to them if we are in such a bad state?

On the subject of public spending. My county council has just had a huge reorganisation (3rd in 5 years) and senior managers have been redeployed(not redundant) whilst their jobs are put out to advert at a higher level. The chief executive is leaving and the replacement has just been appointed. Surely the new one will want things reorganised...

Oh and the dept for families, children, schools (whatever its last name was has been split again into Dept for Education & ? so all the intergrated working that has been promoted will eventually be split up again causing more restructuring at ground level.

mamatomany · 08/06/2010 10:32

I don't think it is though because most women work in part time poorly paid roles that pay NI and some tax and are usually serving another woman in some way so they are self fulling roles.
ie remove the job from the female accountant, she doesn't need childcare any more so there's 2 jobs gone and neither can afford the hairdressers now.
It would make no sense whatsoever to the economy, I don't believe for a moment they are that short sighted.
