Dave's cuts are going be deep and they will hurt

I've been hearing this all day on the radio. I can't take the suspense any longer. They are going to affect the lives of 'every one of us'

I feel like a person wincing and clenching my teeth in anticipation of the big fuck-off needle the school nurse is wielding, and I'm next in the queue....

Come on then, what's it going to be?

lego stuck it is going to hurt, but everyone is going to be affected, middle and higher earners can take the hit without it being a matter of life and death.

I know life is not easy on a wage of just over 30K is hard, we can only afford to have one child. But life is even harder for other people.

whomovedmychocolate · 07/06/2010 21:43

cappster - you don't know what bankers do do you?

katycarr · 07/06/2010 21:46

I think it is oversimplistic to just blame bankers.

legoStuckinmyHoover · 07/06/2010 21:48

well, it is just me for my two children katycarr.
it is bad enough now, afetr childcare im only a few hunderd a year better off! I know, its not life or death, but i could afford 2 children before my ex decided to leave me for a woman 10 years younger than me a few years ago! You cannot always plan in life!

FellatioNelson · 07/06/2010 21:50

Which bankers would you pick cappstar? After all, there are many thousands of them. How do you decided who is a manipulative greedy fat-cat with world domination on his mind, and who is just a bloke/woman working very, very hard in a high-pressure competitive environment that demands excellence, commitment and intelligence, and who just works within the parameters allowed by the government/FSA to do the best they can for their families?

After all, 'Bankers' has become a bit of a perjorative catch-all term, like 'benefits scroungers', has it not?

I know you can't lego and I did not mean to suggest that you should not have 2 children. I was trying to make the point that I am not saying cut public sector pay because I have it cushy.

We will just make it to the end of the month, this month we are also cruising to work hoping the petrol will last and it is jacket potato and beans for me all this week. But compared to many I have it easy.

isnt the point that if public workers etc are taking cuts so deep that they ''will be eating baked beans/if not already everyday' [I said it], then those who are absolutely loaded should be taking an equivelent cut. Thats how I see it. and no, not the usuall bank staff in our high street- but the really high earners.
by the way, my job also demands excellence, commitment and intelligence but this does not mean I get paid £250k per year.

katycarr · 07/06/2010 21:58

The govt can only slash the wages of those they employ.

Many of the people who I went to university with are bankers, many have lost their jobs. As have many people all over the private sector.

I am asking the general public to fund my pension which is better than most people can dream of. I don't think a pay cut is much to pay back.

legoStuckinmyHoover · 07/06/2010 21:59

by the way, it's fine katy, but a blanket £30k with 2 kids in london really does not get you much imo.

pocketmonster · 07/06/2010 22:00

I agree whomoved if they start cutting jobs then we are going to go into recession again.

Seems to me that the Dave is just doing what the Tories always do - cutting public services - only now they have a nice excuse for it which gets all the private sector people on their side because they are only doing it to cut the deficit.

Added to which he can say 5 times a day that it is the last Goverments fault - seemingly ignoring the fact that this has been a global recession - and bingo! people believe him. So we have proof that if you repeat something often enough people will eventually take it as the truth.

Surely it makes much more sense to spread the cost more widely and more thinly, by tax rises. How does putting people on the dole make things better?

Am I ranting...?

I know lego, I had to leave London as I could not afford to stay and London needs good teachers. Maybe we need regional salaries rather than a few thousand allowance.

legoStuckinmyHoover · 07/06/2010 22:13

yes, katycarr you could be right there. I don't know what would be fair. Seems it's a massive pay drop as soon as you leave london, but actually some rents are not that different in some other parts of the UK.

Beaaware · 07/06/2010 22:19

I really hope they cut the £24 million in child benefits that Labour were giving to Polish children living in Poland.

FellatioNelson · 07/06/2010 22:19

But pocketmonster, Yes, it was a global recession admittedly, but how well we were able to deal with it depended entirely on how healthy our bank balance was to start with. And ours was clearly shit. We were in total denial about the fact that we'd been living way beyond our means. All of us as a nation, not just the government. The chickens just came home to roost unexpectedly , that's all. Other countries have been affected by the global recession but have been more easily able to cope, because they were better prepared.

all I know is I am scared..

pocketmonster · 07/06/2010 22:27

Sparkly - me too - I wish they would just say what is going to happen. I feel like we are going to be living on the street by Christmas, have this horrible sense of forboding.

The thing I don't understand is the £billions they pumped into Northern Rock, RBS and Lloyds TSB must be making them money now and is clearly an investment that they can recoup. As this money was one of the main causes of the rise in our debt to 60%ish of GDP - why isn't George O letting us know how much that is worth and when we will get it back?
