Is everyone on Twitter now?

I'm looking for a LibDem statement of the reasoning behind the policy. Do those LibDems who support it actually do so on libertarian grounds? Or is it on messed up 'egalitarian' grounds? I have no idea.

Instinctively you would think that a libertarian approach would favour no departure from the strict principles of libertarian justice, i.e. procedurally defined in terms of openness and publicity (tjherefore no anonymity for anyone).

You have to be vv careful in general about NOT equating a civil liberties approach with libertarianism -- the former but not the latter being capable of embracing things like positive discrimination and 'big government'. I associate the Libs much more whith a civil liberties approach than a libertarian one.

The Labour Uncut article is a great piece of agitation, of course, which is what is needed re the anonymity issue. But the analysis reminded me of the issues earlier on the thread around civil liberties as a priority, which seemed like an interesting set of areas for discussion, particularly since part of the Labour Party's refined self-definition over the next few months is likely to involve a bit of soul searching around the erosion of civil liberties during its tenure.

onebatmother · 24/05/2010 21:09

Very true Eleison re the next few months.

AppleTreeWick · 25/05/2010 09:11

Great Article one bat - monumentally depressing also.

A very nice sounding young man was on Today prog this morning explaining (with no numbers specified) that directing money at less able students would not give that much benefit...welcome to the schools yes but in policy terms you couldn't prove that you got your moneys worth in terms of higher achievement. Anyway did anyone else hear this and can you remember any more of it (I was half asleep). Or direct me to somewhere with pie charts n graphs n stuff?

gingercat12 · 25/05/2010 12:26

Wow! Onebat Very good article on Labour Uncut.

lol. I just saw that on twitter and thought of putting it here. Twitter and MN seem to be merging somehow, with MNers all twittering about MN and Mning about Twitter.

animula · 27/05/2010 10:48

And just to give weight to Eleison's observation wrt Twitter and mn, here's an article from Twitter.

I thought it was interesting because it suggested some ideas for The Great Path forwards, with special regard for women.

I must apologise, I have to post and run, but I thought it might be interesting to start to think about one of the questions this election raised for me, which is the one about Involving Women In Politics. I know it's an Oldie But Goldie, but I think there might be some key differences this time round. Not least the fact that Labour seem to be very keen to re-activate local involvement. Which is often where the women seem to be (!) ... .

Leningrad - -ve : cut-backs tend to be bad for progressive causes, don't they? But +ve : opposition "porous" to suggestions than (re-) connect them with support AND the structure should be more open to entry from people (eg Women) and ideas excluded from party holding on to power.

Anyway, I'm going to come back, and pull things out from article ( I hope) to try and lure others in here. But I must go to work. (That's a stream-of-consciousness note to self!)

Eleison · 27/05/2010 11:23

Interesting article here on Cruddas's NS criticism of potential Labour leaders failure to address the links between globalisation and British mistrust of immigration.
