Labour have accepted defeat according to Radio 4 news now

claig · 11/05/2010 18:02

I thought John Kampfner on Sky made a very good analysis. This really is a sea change in our politics. There is no going back to the old 2 party system anymore, we are in new territory.

PussinJimmyChoos · 11/05/2010 18:04

I wanted Tories to win anyway so

MaisietheMorningsideCat · 11/05/2010 18:08

The new multi-party system sounds good in theory, but isn't there a danger that the smaller barking mad and -dangerous-- parties such as the BNP will do better out of it?

claig · 11/05/2010 18:10

I think you are right. I think they will do better. Particularly under PR. But that is the price of democracy.

!

it's a great coalition and the LibDems have good policies on most issues so they are very good partners. This represents a new start for the country and offers hope

EdgarAllenPoll · 11/05/2010 18:49

i think i welcome this...let's see how it pans out.

it's no tlike the conservatives are even proposing much in the way of radical change anyway. it's all little tweakings here and there.
frankly labour are in a bit of a sorry state (having seen the leadership concede, after having made an unnsuccessful play for power by offering the LDs things that would probably have annoyed many labour supporters...and having lost as incumbents)

i think if a lib-con governemnt did break down, the subsequent election could favour the conservatives as things stand. I also think that the relative political stability since 1979 always favours the governing party..

claig · 11/05/2010 18:53

if the Tories are smart, they will let Vince Cable be Chancellor, so that he takes the flak rather than them. The biggest winners in all of this are the LibDems, they will now appear on the world stage and if they can prove that they are up to it, then they could end up displacing Labour, which would be a monumental achievement for a party that has been out of the limelight for a century.

Claig "I think you are right. I think they will do better. Particularly under PR. But that is the price of democracy."

I don't think PR is democratic. Democracy is about the majority vote not pandering to minority interests.
