Many, many people are jumping on the PR wagon without understanding what it means.

  1. They think it will translate to national % of the vote = national % in Parliament. That's not necessarily true.

  2. They think that the way we vote will remain the same - 1 vote for 1 candidate. That's not necessarily true either, STV is more likely.

  3. They ignore the fact that people will still need to 'win' on a local level. Constituencies will need to be reformed but voting nationally would be less representative than the current system because you wouldn't get to know who you were voting for.

  4. Our political system is incredibly adversarial. The whole thing is set up for 2 party politics. PR would require a complete change in political thinking.

I could go on about this for days. And days. And days. Especially if I have a cranberry juice and am sitting in a student bar...(I was a rare teetotal student!)
