Would you consider not voting?I am for the first time ever

That'll teach 'em

sethstarkaddersmum · 04/05/2010 09:21

no way!
this the most exciting election for ages because we really don't know what's going to happen.
Even 1997 (the last big change) was more predictable than this.

why don't you want to vote? Don't you like ANY of your candidates? Aren't there even any nice independents or minority parties you could vote for, just to encourage them a bit?

Sweeedes · 04/05/2010 09:22

It won't teach em anything at all. They will get a result without you.

Our local council is green and she is great.I just hate the whole way it has gone and the debate etc and feel like opting out.I have always loved politics and been interested/fascinated with it but have lost faith in the whole system

NoahAndTheWhale · 04/05/2010 09:24

There is no way I wouldn't vote.

But...

in our constituency the conservatives had about 12,000 majority last time. Labour were next and Lib Dems had not many votes.

I know the seat will be conservative, however I vote. If there were a green candidate I would possibly vote green but there isn't. I think I will vote labour. If it were a case of being close between Lib Dem and conservative I would vote Lib Dem. My other choices are BNP and UKIP and I'm not voting for either of them.

Haliborange · 04/05/2010 09:25

No. I have once spoiled my ballot paper though, when there was no real choice between candidates - it was a Euro election and all the prospective MEPS were opposed to the Euro.
Don't forget this is not just about who will govern and who will be PM, it is about getting a decent MP for your area. I know that a good, effective MP can make a lot of difference if there are local issues. Why not vote on that basis?

noddyholder · 04/05/2010 09:27

I never thought I would be one of the 'they're all the same' brigade but its how I feel this time.Don't believe in the system at all just wondered if anyone never votes as a matter of course

OP posts:
TheCrackFox · 04/05/2010 09:27

No.

It took us long enough to get the vote.

CrosswordGeek · 04/05/2010 09:27

I wouldn't even consider not voting, I'm a first timer and I think it is a HUGE thing to be able to live in a country where you do have some choice who runs it.

I canb't abide people who don't vote, but continuously moan about the fact that things are shit. Yes, a lot of the time it is like choosing between the pile of shit and the pool of vomit, but you have to decide what's got the least stench.

warthog · 04/05/2010 09:30

NO

noddyholder · 04/05/2010 09:30

I think its a bit strong to say you can't abide people who exercise the right not to vote too!I have always voted and thought about the women who fought for this so am not just a lazy arse

OP posts:
LadyBlaBlah · 04/05/2010 09:30

They are not all the same

Each party works according to fundamental differences in philosophies. They may try to look the same, but read between the lines and the differences are very very apparent

sethstarkaddersmum · 04/05/2010 09:30

what aspect of the system don't you believe in?
what would you like instead?
why don't you just vote Green?
If you don't want to vote then at least spoil your ballot paper because if everyone did that voters at least couldn't be accused of apathy - you would have demonstrated you were prepared to put the effort in to express your view, even if your view is that they should all f* off.

claig · 04/05/2010 09:30

not voting does send a message that does "teach 'em". They hate low turnout figures because it lessens the mandate to rule. Spoiled ballots count as turnout and are therefore worthless. Low turnout spells a crisis and exposes the sham, and it may just one day force them to introduce real democracy with a proportional voting system. The only other way is to hope that the Liberals hold enough power to change things, but who knows if that will happen.

SoupDragon · 04/05/2010 09:31

I'm tempted because it the conservatives are a certainty for this constituency. It's all rather pointless.

noddyholder · 04/05/2010 09:32

Claig I agree.

I'm in a true blue constituency, but not only am I still voting LibDem, I've actually been out with leaflets for them (1st time ever!). I'd be ashamed of myself if I didn't vote, plus which, I feel if I vote, I have the right to bitch endlessly when the party I didn't vote for inevitably get in and mess the country up.

Clary · 04/05/2010 09:38

I always always vote. I really feel we owe it to the women who got us the vote.

FWIW my new constituency (I was in a Labour one) will be won by the hideous Tory candidate. I am not very keen on the Labour man either tbh but will be voting for him.

Would be tempted to vote Green but sadly not an option.

SoupDragon · 04/05/2010 09:38

Our Tory MP is a twat.

SoupDragon · 04/05/2010 09:39

Sadly, the Monster Raving Loony candidate is in a neighbouring constituency.

claig · 04/05/2010 09:39

they are so desperate to continue with the cosy charade, that Labour's Peter Hain and Geoff Hoon have been advocating that we should all be forced to vote, as in Austalia. This suits them because they can then pretend that everything is hunky dory, all the citizens are happy, and democracy is great. The Tories are against this, because in a free society you are entitled not to vote, to withdraw your support from any of the parties, to show them what you think of them. However much they would like to, they can't march you down to the polls to approve some banana republic style dictator.

noddyholder · 04/05/2010 09:40

My dp will go nuts if i don't vote but I am still indecided I think the system is unfair
