Sorry it's a DM story but another reason not to trust the party that gave us record unemployment, sky high mortgage rates in the 80's the poll tax and sold off the family silver amongst other things.

Whatever party wins the election will be putting up vat. It is the only sensible thing to do. There will be massive cuts too. There is no alternative. The whole system is too complicated imo but I wouldn't want them to attempt to sort it out as they would make a complete hash of it.

DC spacifically mentioned carers in the debates and said how much it would cost the economy if they all gave up (before claggy jumped on the bandwagon), I think DC is the only one actually gives a rats about disabled people, carers and the poor.

"he was quoting me I said that very same thing to him "

See Riven he does listen (and snatches the best bits) , I'll bet you nearly pee'd your panties when you heard him quote you to you .

Good luck with that

It was actually one of the only things I found myself cheering out loud too during the debates, so well done there.

I think he actually does care though, I tend to judge a person by the way they interact with other peoples children and the footage of him at primary schools talking with the kids feels very genuine.

It would be interesting to see how fond people were of VAT increases if the scope were extended to things like private school fees etc...

MmeBlueberry · 02/05/2010 16:20

Bursaries will disappear. No difference to the school, but some kids will suffer.

smallishsheep · 02/05/2010 16:32

But mmeblueberry, labour did away with assisted places in private schools almost as soon as they came in. I remember as I'd just started so luckily my place was safe.

drosophila · 02/05/2010 16:35

Bursaries wouldn't disappear if they could get their hands on poor but brilliant students.

peanutbutterkid · 02/05/2010 16:36

Have the Tories pledged to not raise income tax? I have tried to read thread carefully but I can't see anyone saying that.

So I reckon Tories will raise income tax as part of their general plans to change PAYE -- in addition to VAT rise.

Only Labour has pledged that they won't raise income tax, I think!

smallishsheep · 02/05/2010 16:39

It does piss me off that a good education is now only for those that can afford it.
My younger brother and sister are 10 years younger than I am. Both sat the entrance exam, passed, and were offered bursaries. It was still far too expensive for my parents to consider. I can't tell you how bloody grateful I am to not have had to go to the local comp. My parents did a bit more scouting around and got them into a non fee paying, selective entry grammar school, but the travel fees are still very high

SanctiMoanyArse · 02/05/2010 16:40

I'd probably agre with Riv about DC as an individual but KC frigtens the life out of me. From my memories of temping for 18 months in VAT office in 1995.

Which i reckon is a fair judgement basis.

scaryteacher · 02/05/2010 16:59

Labour said that before and kept to the letter but not the spirit of what they'd said by raising NI and various other taxes. They have put tax up to 50% and withdrawn the personal allowance from those who earn over £150k.

Alouiseg · 03/05/2010 00:46

Frankly i had a rubbish education.... 70's primary schools were full of "learning through play"

Comprehensives were for the riff raff whose parents couldn't swing an assisted place.....

But thanks to Lady Thatcher I got off my arse and Lord Tebbit's bike and i went to London.....which the much maligned Mrs T had deregulated and i got a job, not just any job but a fully fledged dealers assistant in the freshly de-regged city of london. It paid my train fare AND my rent and made zero allowances for my 90 minute commute of fearsome amount of tights i needed.

On the back of that job i met my friends, my husband and had THE best time a girl could have. Sadly the city has been caned. it was the one place a girl from shitsville in Essex could could work her arse off and make a fantastic life for herself. That oportunity isn't there anymore thanks to horrid tax laws and the need for a crap degree in in a crap subject.

The day that Mrs T dropped the top rate of tax from 60% to 40% happened to coincide with Desert Orchid winning the Gold Cup at Cheltenham..... It was a bloody marvellous day, England had been set free from the burdensome tax and spend era of the Labour party.

They really were Golden days and i would go back in a heartbeat. My point is tenuous... i'm sad for the lack of opportunities for young people, i'm sad at the emphasis on education and i'm gutted that the Labour Party ave turned the whole country into a Trouble at Mill kind of place.

Time for the newest Conservatives to hand the reins back to the brains..

Nothing wrong with a comp in the late 70s / early 80s, especially as Grammars had been abolished in Hampshire and I didn't want to go to boarding school. I had some fantastic teachers, and can still remember most of them today.

I got my O levels and A levels in the 80s; got a job and then got married. Went to college with a grant and came out without huge amounts of student debt. Was unemployed for 4 months, and then got another job which I had for 10 years. Had ds in 1995, and went back to work in 1996 on a jobshare that my employer arranged. All this under the Tories.

I accept that your experience was different Riven, but so has mine been under Labour.

The problem is that the Tories don't seem to have any firm plans. The launch of their manifesto, DC was saying that he wanted people to be in government with them and participate.

No great ideas and people don't seem to love the Tories for any positive reasons other than they hate Labor forgetting that most of the major government decisions (Iraq, Afghanistan, bailing out the banks), the Tories have been in agreement.
