April 22nd TV Debate

I'm going along to be in the audience this Thursday for the Sky News TV Debate - it's being filmed in the South West, although it seems we're not supposed to say exactly where for security reasons.

Would people like an official MN behind-the-scenes report afterwards?

Should I break the rules and heckle/cheer loudly at a strategic moment, and if so then when?

If I'm allowed to ask a question should I go "off-script" and ask about biscuits?

Is there anything else I should think about?

What is this 'done the right thing' thing from DC?

wubblybubbly · 22/04/2010 21:03

Well there you have it, if you're poor it's because you didn't work hard enough.

mrsbean78 · 22/04/2010 21:03

Bumper... I don't think it should be either or. Residential care should be available to all of our elderly. I don't agree with DC saying that it's about 'doing the right thing' as there are far too many people who 'did the right thing' but still have bugger all e.g. their errant spouse gambled/drank the savings away, ran away with the cleaner etc. How we pay for it is another thing, but there are an awful lot of people with very limited savings, maybe just a family home, who have to sell these in order to pay for residential care that might not otherwise need to be longterm and that's not good either.

RecycledIcicle · 22/04/2010 21:03

are we going to have to live by tick boxes to make sure we all 'do the right thing'?

VoidofDiscovery · 22/04/2010 21:04

def v good NC, yes they SHOULD work together for the greater common good

CagedBird · 22/04/2010 21:04

"done the right thing" not going to let go of that.

I like the lib dems respite care policy

TheHeathenOfSuburbia · 22/04/2010 21:04

Ah, we have further info on Doing The Right Thing:

  1. Get married before having kids
  2. Own your own house

Tell us more, Dave, do!

Brollyflower · 22/04/2010 21:04

dh says se Thomas the Tank engine and fergus re "do the right thing". Apparently someone gets crushed by rocks. But probably not DC...

Pendulum · 22/04/2010 21:04

mrsbean- by the time I need residential care, my savings will be the least of my worries. I'm not arsed about dying with money in my account.

I agree with a mandatory, means-tested contribution as opposed to a voluntary one. Where schemes like this one are voluntary, "adverse selection" applies so that the people who need the net most often do not make the choices or have the resources to opt in well in advance. An example is health insurance in the US.

DuelingFanjo · 22/04/2010 21:04

which one is squirrel42?

Sabs1981 · 22/04/2010 21:04

DC mentioning Riven again?

MmeLindt · 22/04/2010 21:04

oooh, are we going to hear something that Riven has put into DC's ear?

MayorNaze · 22/04/2010 21:04

time off for carers is all well and good but finding good/appropriate respite care not as easy as it sounds...

MollieO · 22/04/2010 21:04

OMG DC mentioning his son again.

morningpaper · 22/04/2010 21:04

DRINK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

FabIsGoingToGetFit · 22/04/2010 21:05

DC is not saying that. He is talking about people who haven't tried to work and have just dossed about on benefits when they could have worked.

Bumperliouzzzzzz · 22/04/2010 21:05

Fucking hell on the done the right thing! Jeeze! Fuck the inheritance, you should have to pay for your care to some extent (if you can) but I'm really not big on inheritance (how many people need that money when their parents die and are more established anyway). But I say that a the child of a feckless spendthrift mother who will leave me nothing more than 2 cats, mulberry bags and several laptops!
