I've seen it mentioned, but without a single direct quote or link. Yet the OPs seem to want others to explain it....?

Highly efficient just in time delivery systems rely on a "pull production" supply of goods, and large increases in the pull or interruptions can lead to empty shelves and then panic buying really quickly, which exacerbates the problem. It's a problem that can be managed by a bit of capacity in the system, but it's more efficient to place the capacity at the end of the supply chain.
In the good old days, companies held stock as a buffer. Then we adopted the Japanese Just In Time system and the Big Boys decided not to carry stock any more, and made it their suppliers' problem instead. It used to be "I want XXX next month"; now it's "I demand that you deliver next Wednesday at Loading Bay C at 11:52 precisely". Great for the Big Boy but costly for their supplier.
The Government has realised that shortages are a potential problem and, instead of insisting that companies carry sufficient stock, have decided to push the problem in another direction - onto the customer.
It's like Banks etc used to employ staff but now they don't and you - the customer - have to do the work instead (unpaid).

Oh god yes just in time, lean six sigma. I’ve still got my certificate somewhere. Management consultants wet dream at the time.

op , do you work? If so your company probably has a disaster recovery plan, I work in it/financial services and once a year they turn everything off and make sure back up systems work and in between times file play scenarios to test plans. It’s a version of that, have a back up plan. It’s aimed at people who shop day to day not as those who have lots of food in.

I think what I find strange - is don't most people have stuff in their cupboards anyway? Genuinely.

There's always beans, tinned soup, tomatoes, pasta, sauce etc hanging around. The stuff people have been sharing on their lists is just run-of-the-mill items. We always replace stuff as we use it. I think that's what I am struggling to get my head around.

I understand the having candles and bottled water, or whatever else but food - nobody is going to starve in most households if they have to hunker down for 3-5 days.

No, the point is many people don't have a stock these days. Some because they absolutely can't afford it, but many because they live in a different way, they pick things up on the way home for dinner and don't have a pantry like you or I.

Lots of people on the many many many threads don't have any water stored, they've never experienced it not free flowing out of the tap.

Let alone alternatives of lighting heating cooking....

I have become disabled and I'm now unable to use my camping gas cooker outside, so I am trying to find an alternative portable gas cooker that I can use inside, but I'm not actually sure such thing exists?

I have food and that would be preferable heated, but is edible cold, but I really want a gas cooker for boiling water, if I can find one that's safe to use inside.

And no one is so poor that they can't do this.
Some people literally cannot afford to feed themselves on a day to day basis.

And I think your assumption that people are stupid and the government knows best is quite frightening. Especially considering the incompetencey and bad decisions and self interest displayed by the the UK Government in recent years.

The British public reaction to this campaign certainly shows that a fair amount of people are indeed stupid, especially the ones I've seen claiming its some kind of governmental conspiracy to make the public easier to control.

I just take issue with the government encouraging panic buying. Life in recent years has been stressful enough without the government encouraging fear and alarm.

I used to belive, to a certain extent, in benign government. But that went out the window a long time ago with all the evidence of so many politicians self interest and self serving.

MrsPapillon · 29/10/2026 11:45

@WitchesBritches If you were completely stuck, you can put a few tea lights in a roasting tin, and put an oven rack over the top of it, and sit a pan on it. It takes ages (about 45 minutes) to heat a mug full of water or soup or beans, but it will do the job if all else fails and you need an emergency brew or can’t stomach cold beans!

If you think the government is incompetent, all the more reason to develop a bit of self reliance.
Yes or no?

I am self reliant. I always have been. And especially now when i dont have a suppoert network.I don't have any choice. And many many people are in the same position.

I just don't see that how the government has gone about this is to do with developing self reliance. All it's done is prompt panic buying, stress and distrust and make an already difficult life more unpleasant.

Informing the public about how to keep a small emergency stock is not encouraging panic buying, panic buying is what happens when an emergency happens and people don't have anything in stock. This has been advice in my country for years and hasn't led to panic buying.

Yes, thank you.

That's the kind of thing I would've been happy to do before, but since becoming disabled, I'm a liability enough with safe stable objects🤣

Shouldn't laugh, but if you don't laugh, you cry!

I've been able to find a few options now I just need to actually buy stop & trying to find the most perfect one! Perfectionism really is a curse!!

I've been keeping store cupboard supplies for an emergency all my life. As have most sensible people who can afford to.
Why should the government suddenly decide the population is so brain dead that they need informing about this?

Lol.
Because, clearly, a lot of people have needed to be informed judging by the response!

And?....better they do it now when the shelves will be quickly replenished, than do it if something does happen.

The campaign was launched in may 2024
The preppers talked about it https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/preppers/5080496-new-government-guidance-on-prepping

However repeated surveys have shown that 50%+ of the general public are difficult to reach and even more difficult to engage.

Yes, exactly the same day that the GE was called hence the need for the current promotion.

If you’re on Twitter, Prof Lucy Easthope explains the course of events on there. https://x.com/lucygobag/status/2115170964883574862?a=Dij_gNJsaGTaYXOQmKM&s=46

Because clearly a good many of the population are. The last thing the government wants is chaos when crisis hits because half the population have nothing in stock and then start blaming the government for not telling them what to do.

The government has put out a sensible, measured message. Numpties on the internet have filtered it through a diet of Hollywood movies. If you just listen to the govt message it’s fine. If you read the hyperbolic message boards it’s a different story.

The govt has to put the message out, and cannot control (nor are they responsible for) the idiots.

Thank you for taking the time to do that, but unfortunately that has a proper Gas bottle and pipe. I need something that has a canister. I think I'm looking for a unicorn.🙇🏻‍♀️🙇🏻‍♀️

DS went on a bushcraft course today with Scouts. Apparently he learnt how to light a fire with some flint, some cloth and vaseline ( I think?) and made a stew! He's desperate for some kind of apocalypse now. I told him I'll just keep some matches and some BBQ briquettes handy just in case.

The government has issued perfectly reasonable low key advice on being prepared for the sort of inconvenient disruption to services we occasionally experience, usually due to weather.
People with an anti government agenda have blown this up out of all proportion to suggest we are on the brink of attack, because they want to use defence/welfare spending to discredit the government.
Other people are pretending the government have made a big dramatic statement and irresponsibly frightened people unnecessarily, so they can criticise the government for that.
The best thing to do is look at the government messaging yourself rather than through a filter of other people's interpretation of it on SM.
