Has Andy Burnham ended up as PM somewhat under false pretences?

Please note that this is from a left wing Labour supporting paper.

It turns out that the marvellous redevelopment of Manchester that was the central plank of his credibility to become PM was triggered by the fall of Mubarak in Egypt in 2011 and what were effectively, or previously close to, bribes set up by the then Tory government to retain our massive defence contracts with the Middle East.

The owners of Man City, recently found guilty of breaking well over 100 financial football rules, are heavily involved. UK developers were excluded from access to large development contracts. Man City was sold a deal including the naming rights to the stadium, owned by the council, for £750k a year when professional rights brokers estimate the market value to be between £10m and £15m a year for the name alone.

The question is, did a local Mayor with no experience outside politics and only a tiny amount of experience of cabinet roles, (3 jobs in 3 years), get to be Prime Minister without a challenge on the strength of the development of the centre of his city that he actually only had a small part in creating?

It doesn't matter who the woman supports. She was violently attacked for making a comment about not being able to walk around dressed in a t shirt and leggings in Iran. I hope we are not seeing victim blaming here because I remember the reaction at the Reform conference. Was it an antisemitic attack? Possibly, maybe not but it was a 'liberal' student who lashed out and that's being seen more frequently. Sorry @Imdunfer I won't mention this again, as it will derail your thread.

Nobody should ever be physically attacked for their views, but I seem to remember you showed little sympathy when women were attacked by Reform supporters.

She remained very loyal to Starmer, didn't she? Sacrificing her career for two teir.

Quite - even when he tried so shaft her early on. That dreadful episode during PMQ’s - what a nasty POW Starmer was.

She shouldn't have been attacked but her hero Trump is not making things easier for Iranian women and his treats to nuke the country.

The woman who attacked her has been arrested, how is that comparable with the Reform conference? You were one of the posters defending the pensioner who hit the heckler.

I agree - he will roll the dice. He didn’t become PM via popular vote and lacks a mandate for what he would like to do (what his back bench constituents demand he does).

Posters may disagree with you on here, but they will not put any meaningful money behind it.

Those back benchers are as quiet as a mouse when Badenoch addresses them 😆 🤣

MN isn't a gambling site, I think you are confused.

No one but a fool would part with their hard earned money on a bet on whether AB is going to call an election next year.

It's quite worrying that this keeps being promoted.

Yes, student politicians clinging on to their jobs as they know they’re unemployable after this is over.

Eraserewind · 02/11/2026 17:52

You can’t help yourself, despite your hollow promise.

Pathetic.

You forgot the slow motion car crash that was Starmer and Reeves’s dynamic two-year partnership….

I'm not sure I'd characterise their tenure as a car crash. Underwhelming and uninspiring, for sure, but they certainly didn't cause a Liz Truss style economic crash.

Either way, I am glad to have Andy Burnham as Prime Minister now. I was uncertain about the way Keir Starmer was ousted, as in general I find the way we have cycled through so many Prime Ministers over such a short period of time shameful and embarrasing and on primciple, I would rather see elected leaders serve their full term. But I do have to concede, that I feel much more positive about the direction of the country with Andy Burnham as Prime Minister.

Funny how Burnham acts as if that period just didn't exist as well.

True. Labour generally seem to have erased those two years.

Good grief. It was December and now it's May next year?

Certainly wouldn't put a bet on re your predictions.

Remind me where I have posted anything other than May?

Tbf it is easier if it was obvious they’d be bad but Labour believed in them for those two years and before that.

Funny how Burnham acts as if that period just didn't exist as well.

Funny how Badenoch acts as if the 14 years to 2024 didn’t happen. Lots of amnesia around.

placemats · 02/11/2026 18:04

Kemi Badenoch is as much use as a chocolate teapot.

No one with any intellect or intelligence would take what she says during PMQs seriously. Such pity she engenders.

placemats · 02/11/2026 18:07

Oh, apologies, mea culpa. You just said May next year.

Full sail ahead for an election in May.

It might be the last time we see another woman in a senior cabinet position for a long time. They aren't even ever close but no cigar to the main job.

Why would you promote gambling?

Did you watch Bradley Walsh last night and see the devastation gambling cuases?

Funny you mention good causes.

Any winnings should be committed to charity of the winners choice.

Not a fan of Bradley Walsh tbh.

Clavinova · 02/11/2026 18:24

BIossomtoes · 02/11/2026 08:25

That’s not correct. He was Culture Secretary for 18 months and Health Secretary for a year until the 2010 general election.

He was Culture Secretary for 16 months and Health Secretary for 11 months. Kemi Badenoch's main appointments were clearly longer in length and her tenure as a minister also ended with a general election.
