Michael Gove is obviously a total arsehole but I really don't think you can blame him for the fact that someone he dated might have been committed a crime.

She was charged with the offence and he dumped her. What else do you think he should have done? How do you imagine he would have known what she had saved on her laptop? Do you monitor all your partners' web activity minute by minute on every device they access, just to see if they've accessed any sex abuse images?

The story of her being charged is on the BBC news website at the moment, so it's not being covered up. The story doesn't mention Gove, presumably because they're no longer together and there's zero suggestion that he was involved in anyway. Generally speaking, an alleged criminal's ex-partners aren't going to be listed in media coverage if the relationship has ended and they're not part of the investigation (for obvious reasons).

Speculation and insinuation about sex offenders' former partners really, really isn't helpful, especially when the case hasn't even come to court yet.

Jason Ardey was hounded by the press for much less and we filled up several mumsnet threads, yet a controversial, academic partner of a high profile, much older Tory being caught with child abuse images is getting crickets....

I've just looked up the exact definitions of 'possession' and 'category B' and suspect the charges are a nothingburger. Three images over three years could mean somebody sent them to her and she didn't fully delete them. There's certainly no suggestion she created, hoarded or distributed child sex abuse media, or the charge would've reflected that.

I think Michael Gove seems a bit of a twerp, but don't see this as a slur on his character apart from the absurdity of dating a woman half his age.

It’s not like… an easy thing to be charged with possession of child pornography. So weird how many defenders there are on this thread.

I don't think anyones defending her, just saying it's not Gove's fault. He has many, but not this one.

No, I don't think many men would be charged with possession of three Cat B images and one Cat C. They often don't get charged with hundreds, or for distribution of less than Cat A.

To be fair to the police, this is often because of the overwhelming prevalence of these crimes and perpetrators' knowledge of concealment tactics. Salem may have been low-hanging fruit.

All that said, we don't know the backstory. Did she get images of teenagers from mainstream porn sites while researching her work on (paraphrasing) the breakdown of society, or did she have pretty nasty images of a young child she knew? Or anything in between. We'll have to wait and see - if we're interested.

Not a fan of Gove's politics at all, and I'll never be able to get past his stupid comments about the country having had enough of experts. But there doesn't seem to be any evidence of him being involved in this at all, and I think it's pretty low to try to smear him as if he is somehow guilty by association.

I think rumours started about MG as he shared a flat in his younger days with someone who was openly gay. If MG IS gay, can't see why he'd hide it now, would anyone care?

Sorry but that's the second most serious level of indecent images. Abd if you had any idea what that means you wouldnt be calling it a 'nothingburger' .
It's so so hard to get charged with this offence - usually the police just offer a caution.

Well if "you heard" he was in a relationship with a younger man then I guess it must be true.

Based on actual evidence, he was married to a woman and then in subsequent relationships with other women, so
that would pretty much indicate that historically he was straight.

Not that any of this even matters or that anyone cares if he is straight, gay, bi whatever.

It doesn’t matter to me. I actually hate when people assume men are gay just based on their mannerisms etc. I’m just saying that it’s not just people seeing him on TV and assuming he’s gay in this case.

Well clearly it does matter to you, either on a concious or a sub concious basis because otherwise you wouldn't have brought it into this thread.

Especially seeing as this thread is about a woman he previously had a relationship with who is now accused of child sex offences.

So again either consciously or subconsciously why does it matter to you if he is homosexual or not. Because it seems to me to be about as relevant to the topic of this thread as to what football team he supports?
