Restore to hand Burnham victory, leaked poll suggests

The Telegraph are reporting today that a leaked poll of the Greater Manchester constituency put Rupert Lowe’s party at 13 per cent of the vote, sitting 11 percentage points behind Reform UK, which polled at 24 per cent.

Labour was on 35 per cent of the vote, meaning the split on the Right is expected to allow Burnham to return to Westminster.

The leaked poll, which was circulated internally among Labour staffers and published by The i Paper, places support for Restore significantly higher than the two public polls Survation has released during the Makerfield by-election campaign.

Reform sources questioned the authenticity of the latest survey, insisting that it was “disinformation” pushed out by Labour and its activists.

The party said Restore had not polled above 5 per cent of the vote in any of its internal polling.

Meanwhile, a poll by More in Common found less well-off voters without degrees are now more likely to see Reform as “the party of working people” than Labour.

Twenty-six per cent of less wealthy voters who did not go to university said Mr Farage’s party was the party that best represented working people, while 19 per cent said the same about Labour.

Among all Britons, only one third (35 per cent) said Labour was the party of working people, with 18 per cent opting for Reform.

Did they withdraw their candidate? That's the only way they could help.

I can’t see that he ever made any promises to Waspi women. The Waspi website from 22 May says

Andy has stood with WASPI women from the start and today he made clear that his support remains as strong as ever. We appreciate his commitment to working with us as we continue our campaign for justice.

What does ‘standing with the Waspi women’ actually mean if not some compensation of some sort? Otherwise it’s meaningless guff. I’m sure they’ll be thrilled with the subsidised travel he’s now suggesting.

You’d have to ask the women who said it what they mean.

Reform appeals to the uneducated, hardly news is it. Sadly for them and all of us they are also most likely to be harmed by Reform’s policies, whilst still being surrounded by just as many brown people as before.

This is the kind of attitude that lost brexit. What does uneducated mean?
i wont vote reform, ive lost my home in labour and am considering liberals.
but my neighbour is a retired teacher and will, my partners friend is a senior retail manager and will.
we have to find alternatives to calling people names and telling them they are stupid. They aren’t ‘other’ they are the people running toddlers group, working next to you, in your gym class.

The old joke about Burnham goes something like : A Blairite, a Brownite a Corbynite walk into a bar. The barman says, what can I get you Andy?
Burnham is a career politician who has long coveted the top job. He'll be whatever he thinks he needs to be to get there. And then, just like Starmer, he won't have a clue what to do as he has no guiding political philosophy of his own.

They probably thought he meant compensation too. Like the other Labour politicians who ‘stood with them’ until they got into power and had to get off the massive fence they were sitting on.

BIossomtoes · 11/06/2026 21:28

It doesn’t matter what they thought he meant. If he’d made them a promise of compensation it would have been all over their website, not to mention all media. It wasn’t.

Honestly, sometimes I think you just love to argue.

A quick Google found this Independent article. Is recompense the same thing as compensation?

Andy Burnham backtracks on paying compensation to Waspi women

He earlier said they ‘deserve some recompense’, but has now rowed back on that position

I think the same of you. I’ve searched extensively and, like you, can’t find any pledge or promise of cash. Just articles like this that maintain he’s U turned on the alleged promise. I’ll be more than happy to concede the point if either of us finds evidence that a pledge/promise/commitment was ever made.

Call me cynical, but I feel the Telegraph might be encouraging Restore voters to switch. They are literally giving pointers.

Tories don't even feature. Poor Kemi.

I’m sure that is meant to be the message, but if you think about it for a minute isn’t the point that Reform voters should switch to Restore?

Reform are supposed to be the government-in-waiting, with massive momentum – yet the instant a serious new party appears on their right, 50% of Reform’s support flows straight through and supports Restore instead? That ought to tell you everything about where public opinion is actually at.

He offered recompense. He pledged to stand by them.

If standing by them means just, well, standing there and doing nothing, you’re absolutely right that he hasn’t backtracked on anything.

BIossomtoes · 12/06/2026 07:11

That’s exactly what it means. There’s no evidence of recompense being offered, promised, pledged. The only references I can find are those like the one in the i link referencing back track.
