Has Tony Blair shifted far right?

WildEnergySupplier · 27/05/2026 06:24

Tony Blair was always a warmonger with Iraq, but he seems to have gone full on far right / Reform now, criticising Starmer for not jumping in with Trump and the US on Iran.

He's saying we should have let them use our bases straight away and "show up" for America no matter what.

He also said Labour has made mistakes by spending more on welfare, focussing on Net Zero, increasing taxes on businesses..

Has he completely lost the plot? This sounds like proper far right policy to me.

I used to think Blair was centre-ground New Labour, but this feels like he's shifted hard right. In fact it's giving me proper far right / racist vibes.

He is centrist indeed. And what he said is so spot on. I wish someone in current government listened to him, this could change everything and save us from Reform.

It's very telling that Starmer did not respond and Andy just shouted "inequality" and he "will prepare a careful response". Means we're in for another 3 years and 2 months of redistribution. Then - God help us.

Andy Burnham's response was spot on.

Inequality is the biggest problem in this country - and that's why the far right love it.

The day he was elected, he ripped off his New Labour mask, to reveal Margaret Thatcher.

Following the “cost of living” thread, making students pay fees was the very first thing his government did, so that being in eternal debt would feel normal to that generation of young adults. It became the new normal.

We don't tax billionaires but we do expect people with health needs who cannot work for them to survive a cost of living crisis.

@WildEnergySupplier how do you think the government should go about taxing billionaires?

The same way they go about taxing everyone else

Why is it a far right fever dream? Women in some countries aren't allowed to show their faces. Unless I'm woefully misinformed, this is just the situation.

@WildEnergySupplier it would be really interesting for you to watch the Triggernometry episode with Lucy Biggers. I've not heard of her, but it was a really interesting episode.

Edited

They're a pair of Reform supporters.

@WildEnergySupplier I would be surprised if either of those two voted Reform and I think they have voted Labour in the past, not sure about 2024 though.

However, I'm beginning to think you might be a bit drunk. So I shall exit this thread gracefully.

This!

In which case that would mean we haven't had a 'Labour government' since 1979. And what is particularly attractive about a more left-wing-than-blair government?

They left office with interest rates at over 12% and inflation around 10%. After only one term they were soundly voted out of office due to the economic instability and strikes dominated by the unions. It was unarguably a disastrous one term of government. They were soundly punished for it. As you were Kier Starmer...

Didn't you notice at the time that he was the best Conservative Prime minister we'd had in ages?

Oh he later far exceeded any expectations of his Conservative nature I had when I wrote that post!

scalt · 27/05/2026 18:25

Blair said “we’re all middle class”, while he was taking his children on holiday in the Seychelles, in term time, while his government was “cracking down” on this very practice. One rule for them.

And he awarded himself a 50% pay rise when he was re-elected. An early step of the Blair Rich project.

Oh for goodness sake. What twaddle. Minimum wage? Surestart? Peace in Northern Ireland? Tax credits? Record NHS and education spending? I just can’t be bothered to list any more of the “Thatcherite” policies. Those of us who lived through those times know it was progressive, positive and optimistic . I’m off as this is just becoming like a daft 6th form “yeah, but” session.

Op, as pp have pointed out, billionaires do pay tax. If they are tax exiles then there’s nothing the government can do.
Do you honestly believe that it would be possible to get every country in the world to agree to a unified tax regime?

Crace nails it. The photo of Blair is just hilarious. He looks totally 🤪

Thank you so much for posting that. Crace most certainly nails it.

Northermcharn · 27/05/2026 18:36

😂God the education system in this country has failed. Far right? What does that label mean to you op? Objectively?

For example, do you think he's 'far right' for wanting an economy that works, for understanding that biological sex matters, for not wanting people to use benefits as a way of life, rather than a safety net?

They just don't get it. It really is like trying to educate gibbons about finances. Or Lions about vegetarianism.

Far right is anyone you disagree with now, apparently? I'm sure the actual far right are a bit miffed that their identity has been colonized by <checks notes> Tony Blair.

I don't think you understand what productivity mean at all. We've had this discussion several times on other threads, I'm sorry if you think I'm being rude but my patience wears thin making the same points to the same person multiple times. I'm not the only person who points out your errors.

You don't tolerant opposing views, which is fair enough but don't blame others for this.... i've been on the end of your "patience" wearing thin before....

Anyway, treating workers like shite, paying them less and less in real terms (see NHS productivity post Covid and the way successive Govts treat them) will never boost output per worker, couple that with a complete lack of investment in R&D in the UK and our productivity struggle.

Have you any suggestions on how you would boost GDP per capita??

She wasn't giving "an alternative view". She was wrong and I wasn't the only person to tell her so.

Not far right - but he was never left wing anyway. 'Tony Blair PM' is after all an anagram of 'I'm Tory plan B'

Edited

Absolutely hilarious reasoning there re the anagram. It's also an anagram for "try a limp nob" or "my briton pal" so what does that tell us? 🤣🤣

I disagreed with you. You appear to be completely unable to deal with that for some reason. It’s interesting that other people have experienced it too.

...any ideas on how you would boost productivity?

After all, you have said we need to produce more.....

Funnily enough, UK productivity increased more last year than the last 6 years combined.....

A product of NI business increases and the subsequent rise in unemployment?
