Has Tony Blair shifted far right?

Tony Blair was always a warmonger with Iraq, but he seems to have gone full on far right / Reform now, criticising Starmer for not jumping in with Trump and the US on Iran.

He's saying we should have let them use our bases straight away and "show up" for America no matter what.

He also said Labour has made mistakes by spending more on welfare, focussing on Net Zero, increasing taxes on businesses..

Has he completely lost the plot? This sounds like proper far right policy to me.

I used to think Blair was centre-ground New Labour, but this feels like he's shifted hard right. In fact it's giving me proper far right / racist vibes.

Not far right - but he was never left wing anyway. 'Tony Blair PM' is after all an anagram of 'I'm Tory plan B'

Imdunfer · 27/05/2026 06:33

Didn't you notice at the time that he was the best Conservative Prime minister we'd had in ages?

mellongoose · 27/05/2026 06:37

Blimey. Prioritising economic growth is now ‘far right’. Whatever next?!

SmashThePatriarchy · 27/05/2026 06:38

How is that far right?

boobot1 · 27/05/2026 06:38

He sounds the same to me, he was always tory lite. It sounds standard tory me. Wè really need to stop calling everything not extreme left, far right. None of that is far right.

Sure Start centres were hardly a Tory policy, or the huge investment in education.

Crafta · 27/05/2026 06:40

More standard Tory but he always was a bit.

Humblepieman · 27/05/2026 06:41

Do you think anyone who doesn’t agree with you on an issue is far right?

Tories do get things right sometimes.

Twiglets1 · 27/05/2026 06:50

He definitely doesn’t come across as far right.

He was always right of centre Left.

He has made a small shift now to left of centre Right.

WhyamIinahandcartandwherearewegoing · 27/05/2026 06:52

It’s not far right just because it’s not as far left as you want.

Disagreeing with anti racism is usually a far right sign.

I was a Labour Party member until Tony Blair became leader and transformed it from a Socialist party to a right wing one.

He was always right wing so I expect he has become more so with age, as often happens.

Couldn't stand the man then, can't stand him now.

Freysimo · 27/05/2026 06:57

I'm centre right and voted for Tony Blair, he's no way "far right". It really felt like a new dawn when he became PM. Discredited now of course, but I'd still take him as PM over Starmer or Burnham (left, and very left).

Love it!

He is pro-Zionist not far right.

His comments reported in the paper today are such an extreme combination of dodgy lobbyist-friendly stances that I'm genuinely starting to wonder if he is being blackmailed.
I mean, he can't be doing it for the money since any long-term grifting business model requires you to look as if you are adopting positions because they are principled and evidence-based. You kind of torpedo your market value if you just seem to be saying stuff for a fee.

RedToothBrush · 27/05/2026 07:07

Tony has not shifted his political position at all.

Defending Iran is actually defending his decision making with regards to Iraq. It clearly haunts him and his perceived legacy. Iran being a disaster only serves to make Iraq like a shit show too, from our point in history which we reflect on.

Tony is a massive narcissist. He doesn't like that the current Iran war makes him look bad and be reflected on as a monster. He's still trying to justify his own decision making.

As for his comments about a lack of cohesive Labour Party, can someone explain to me very slowly and in detail why he's wrong on this? It will make for interesting reading and an exercise in why and how the Labour Party are in this mess due to blinkers and toned deafness.

Parentingisharder · 27/05/2026 07:10

That is silly. Disagreeing with anti-racism is not far right. … however I can’t resist, I’d love to know what you think is “far right” op?

FestivalOfNight · 27/05/2026 07:12

Far right? Grow up

sunnydisaster · 27/05/2026 07:17

Def not far right, but more Tory aligned. Plus most people get more right wing as they get older.

bilbohaggins · 27/05/2026 07:17

I’m really confused about what TB has said that is racist.

lots of the domestic policy stuff is what quite a large proportion of the country think (why do you think that the tories got in?). At best, it is centre right. To be honest, it’s not far off where we were in the 90s when it was centre left. You have to stop using “far right” in this way - you totally lose credibility if you suggest that Tony Blair is genuinely on the same platform as Tommy Robinson

So, you don’t think the welfare budget needs reform then?
