Greens in London- I must have been living under a rock!

I have been quite busy at work recently so not following local politics that closely, but I had been reading the leaflets through my door and got the impression that my local council was a simple Labour v Lib Dem race.

I’m in a London Borough with a long history of Labour control. Thought it was time for a change, duly cast my votes for the Lib Dems only to wake up today and find that the Greens had come within 100 votes of unseating Labour in my ward, they have won loads of other wards, Labour has lost control and it’s now NOC with Greens second biggest party.
And the borough next door has a Green mayor and there are Green controlled councils all over London!

The Lib Dems are nowhere to be seen.

(I am ignoring Tories and Reform as they are totally irrelevant round here). How did I not see this coming?

I have nothing against the Greens, would possibly have voted for them if I’d realised they were a viable second party.

I think a couple of the suspended candidates ended up being elected.

Deputy leader Rachel Millward was asked about that on Question Time and didn’t seem to know what was going on. She’s another useful idiot.

I saw her on the Politics show, she really couldn't answer questions about all the candidates who have been investigated for antisemitism, neither why they're attracted to the party, nor why the party has been slow to act on the issue.

No, that’s her stock answer when questioned about antisemitism.

Apparently the Greens are a unifying party against the hateful division of Reform.

Nadia Sawalha's husband, Mark Adderley, has been elected as a Green Councillor. It's worthwhile having a look at what he posted online.
I thought he'd been suspended by the party?

I read before the elections that he had been suspended by the Green party but was standing as an Independent 😩

It's not as if it wasn't obvious that she was going to be questioned about antisemitism in the Green party seeing as it has been in the media so much recently.

Maybe she has been living under a rock too.

So he does ... I just read that he was elected for the Greens despite being currently suspended over comments criticised by the communities secretary as antisemitic.

According to the Jewish chronicle, as the deadline for candidate registrations had already passed, he remained listed on the ballot as a Green candidate and the local branch of the party continued to campaign for him, saying he was “very much still our candidate”.

Well that does NOT inspire much confidence about the Green party 🙄 Going by the Jewish Chronicle report, he sounds absolutely sickening

So, they're obviously happy for him to represent them. Plus the electors are happy for him to be a councillor. How worrying.

@TeenagersAngst you know you can stop her popping up on your Instagram? I do hate Instagram so I don't really use it. But if you click within that post, you should find a menu on your right hand side and you can select that you don't want to see that person's content again.

Twiglets1 · 10/05/2026 18:58

He is also mentioned in this report by The Standard, along with 8 others:

At least nine London Green Party candidates accused of antisemitism

Mark Adderley, who is standing as a candidate in the Crystal Palace and Upper Norwood ward of Croydon, was suspended by the party following allegations that he shared antisemitic tropes and conspiracy theories about Jewish people on social media.

Mr Adderley, who is the husband of Loose Women star Nadia Sawalha, included one video that attributed responsibility for the Golders Green ambulance attack in March to Israel’s Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu. He denies allegations of antisemitism.

Being anti the abhorrent, genocidal actions of a rogue state is not antisemitism. People should stop and ask themselves why the billionaire owned media would aim to deliberately conflate the two things in order to create this perception of The Green Party…

It's not just a perception of the Green party is it - have you not read the antisemitic comments made by actual Green party candidates?

Who are you referring to? If it’s the husband of the idiotic Loose Women’s ‘star’, I can confirm his rhetoric extends far beyond criticising the Israeli government.

one candidate referred to Jews as “cockroaches” and their deputy leader praised 7th October massacre and caused a local rabbi and his family to go into hiding. A woman voted mayor said that burning synagogues isn’t terrorism it’s “revenge”

their confidence making these comments and the fact people still vote for the party make me feel sick with fear and I’m not Jewish.

fairyring25 · 10/05/2026 19:50

My concern is that people who vote green just want to protect the environment, without really looking into their policies. The Greens are more extremist than Reform. Have people who voted green read their manifesto? Their manifesto would create anarchy. Stop the police being allowed to stop and search. Stop formal testing in secondary schools. Open our borders up and let everyone in. And more worrying their policies could lead to the destruction of the UK as one of their policies is to get rid of nuclear weapons even if that means the UK is attacked by Russia and Iran.

Does calling Jewish people ‘cockroaches’ fall within your acceptable criticism range?

Or have you not actually bothered to read all the repellent examples of what Green candidates have written?

LassiKopiano24 · 10/05/2026 20:36

All political parties seem to have some kind of racism problem, it’s not just the Greens is it.

It is worrying how many candidates have been elected who have said some awfully racist things (I haven’t heard anything like that about the Lib Dems tbh but could be wrong)

Because they're the only left wing party other than labour, who apparently almost everyone is pissed off with!

There’s been a lot of coverage and discussion about the Greens. It’s on a par with how much coverage Farage used to get when he was leader on UKIP etc This is the first time I can name and recognise the Green party leader.

And this is the problems with our politics. Part of the reason the leader of the greens is a household name is because of the ‘shock’ statements. One of the long-standing green leases was Caroline Lucas, a very sensible, empathetic, actually quite centrist person. She has strong convictions about the environment and did good groundwork in the party but didn’t have the same profile or success as the current leader.

We’ll end up swapping the two old parties for two new more extreme parties.

This. Im no fan of Labour, but I’m absolutely dreading the next GE. Pretty sure it will be Reform or a Reform coalition. I find the prospect of the Greens being in power equally terrifying. Labour and the Cons won’t get in again because the public are too too focussed on punishing them. So we are destined to be governed by wackos. What with high costs and global instability it all feels a bit hopeless.
