Why is socialism viewed so negatively in politics and media?

Why do people not like socialism?

To me it doesn't seem disastrous but it's portrayed in the media as a horrific way for a society to run.

Any thoughts?

so what makes a average journalist special ?

Nothing makes an average journalist special. No more special than an average anything else? But they are more qualified to do their job than someone qualified for a different job. And journalism is only part of 'media'. It takes digital, technical, printing, design, advertising, editorial, business etc specialism and most importantly networks and connections.

@GarlicFind High spending by the state makes tax payers poorer. Far more productivity is needed by those working to pay for socialist policies. We have many socialist policies - the nhs for a start. A wide ranging benefits system and free schooling. The problem is, as Rachel Reeves realises, productivity and higher taxes pays for this. People are mostly resistant to higher taxes. Socialists also take assets from private companies for the state. I’m not happy with that concept. It’s legalized robbery. For most industries nationalized in the 1940s, it didn’t work out well and continued state handouts ensued. Again, it cost a lot with no benefits to anyone. Let business run business but make sure there are controls firmly in place for essential services. Essentially, most countries cannot afford left wing socialism but like a hybrid model that’s more affordable.

Basic Outline: Media Run by University Professors
1. Leadership

  • Media organisations would be run by groups of university professors instead of business executives.
  • Different subjects (politics, science, economics, etc.) would each have their own experts in charge.
2. Content Creation
  • Professors and researchers would create the main content.
  • Students and junior academics could help write and research stories.
3. Fact-Checking
  • Before anything is published, it would be checked by other experts in the same field.
  • The focus would be on accuracy rather than speed.
4. Types of Content
  • Quick updates for breaking news.
  • Longer explanations that give background and context.
  • In-depth reports for more complex topics.
5. Style of Reporting
  • Less sensational headlines and more focus on facts.
  • Clear explanation of sources and evidence.
  • Different viewpoints shown if experts disagree.
6. Technology
  • Online platforms where people can read, watch, and explore topics.
  • Links to studies or data so people can check information themselves.
7. Funding
  • Funded by governments, universities, or charities.
  • Possibly some subscriptions, but basic information stays free.
8. Main Goal
  • To inform and educate the public rather than entertain or make profit.

Good luck with that.

chances are the current billionaire owners of the current media would never allow it, but overall that would be a better model for society

Show me where a government/charity funded media has worked. How would universities fund it when they can't even fund themselves? Who is teaching students while the professors are all running the media? Presumably they would all prioritise publishing their own research rather than what the public wants? How would you know what the public wants with no market?
do you mean ALL media, no private enterprise at all? No independent magazines, podcasts, websites? Sounds completely stultifying.

Ones you probably should have considered before proposing the idea?

i seem to be like the rest of society think of an idea first before considering all other points

To answer your first question the BBC

To answer your first question the BBC

That's one broadcaster - not 'the media' and it is funded by the licence fee so is not 'free' to users (thoughbit is in my view very good value). And it very much operates in a diverse market place.

a country only needs one main news outlet eg the bbc.

MNLurker1345 · 12/04/2026 19:34

@EveyHammond “a country only need…..”
and what would I do? I don’t watch or read BBC news. Would I be forced to?

Says who, Putin? A healthy democracy requires multiple news outlets. You could say the BBC is the UK's main news outlet as its the single provider that reaches the most people but it is only one news provider in a crowded field and very few people (possibly nobody) consumes only BBC produced news.
And the media is more than news.

Only one state controlled outlet?

Sounds very restrictive. Some socialist countries probably do this.

Would you also ban social media do no other information gets in?

They try - but you know what happens? People devise their own ways of disseminating news and content to bypass the state controlled media.

SharonEllis · 12/04/2026 19:51

Which does all rather point to why people view socialism negatively. Im left wing but people don't want to be constrained by uniformity. The idea of one state funded broadcaster run by academics would fill most people with horror.

As would constraining people so they can’t leave a country. It takes a lot of control by a powerful few to keep people in line.

and yet the handful of billionaires that control the media instead is better how exactly ?

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 12/04/2026 19:56

@EasternStandard Communist countries control the media. No one in their right mind actually wants this. Who will go unheard?

No evidence for that. Look at the offcom report I posted. Lots of people using social media.

You are actually serious about this arent you? Can I suggest you go and live in North Korea or the Uslamic Republic of Iran for a bit. Then come back and let us know which system is better.

Which billionaires are controlling the BBC, Channel 4, The Guardian just for starters? Is it really a 'handful' of billionaires or actually quite a lot of different ones, all with competing agendas and varying degrees of editorial control?

MNLurker1345 · 12/04/2026 20:30

When you @EveyHammond first posted that the media should be run by university professors, I didn’t believe you were being serious.

Is what you are advocating for the same media structures as of countries such as Russia, N. Korea, China? Are you in support of suppression of media outlets because they are owned by billionaires?

Do you only receive your news from the BBC?

Are you being serious?
