Why is socialism viewed so negatively in politics and media?

Why do people not like socialism?

To me it doesn't seem disastrous but it's portrayed in the media as a horrific way for a society to run.

Any thoughts?

I have come to realise that many of the serious mistakes made in and by the West in the 20th century (often heavily criticised by those on the left today) were driven by an absolute terror of communism (actual communism

@SisterTeatime which serious mistakes?

Wintersonata · 11/04/2026 19:42

most of the media should be disbanded

@EveyHammond . Disbanded by whom? What form should the permitted media take and who would decide what this should be?

I've been to Miami (essentially a Cuban built city) and I've been to Cuba. I only saw people trying to escape from one to the other in one direction - and it wasn't towards socialism.

Nazi Germany. US interference in Central and South America. The Vietnam War.

It’s a broad brush take, of course, but I think it’s valid.

Interesting point of view, explain, we are listening!

@SisterTeatime thank you for answering my question.

They’ll be kept busy, monitoring and censoring the World Wide Web!

Pacificsunshine · 11/04/2026 20:43

There is negativity around socialism because it makes societies poorer, and involves state coercion because so many people resist its requirements.

Which socialist policies make societies poorer and have to be coercively applied?

the key is many of them not one or 2

Jeantheoldbean · 11/04/2026 23:40

It’s viewed negatively because of the negative effect it has on people’s lives. Look at what Labour have done to the country in just two years ….and that’s the diet version of socialism.

You can't be serious, its a ridiculous idea. Completely different skill sets, completely different pace. The media is fast paced, the whole point of academia is that it is slow. Academics are specialists, editors and journalists need to have wide ranging interests if not be generalists. A few could do it - some do dabble a bit in journalism but university professors would generally be hopeless at it.

They also have a tendency to be on the left.

I think that depends on the subject actually, but yes, they are pretty detached from reality and indulge in a lot of luxury beliefs. The worst kind of middle class 'socialists' in my experience.

University Professors?

I'm not sure I want my news delivered by an expert in medieval poetry or quantum physics.

I don't think you understand much about academics?

Or the range of skills required in media.

No, it would be interesting to see how University Professors could have delivered a multi page exposé in the Times about the origins of the Covid virus. Or run the Daily Mail campaign to bring the killers of Stephen Lawrence to justice.

TheFatRat · 12/04/2026 09:34

I worked for years alongside university professors and my take on this is most of them are good in their field, but useless outside of it. My level of education is not as high as theirs, but I was shocked at how clueless some of them were and I am talking about completing basic tasks and having an awareness of activities around them. Plus most are very left wing. Why should they be in charge of the media.

The engineering tutors were the most switched on, but nevertheless I would not like them in charge of our media.

We may as well choose butchers or bakers or candlestick makers.

EveyHammond · 12/04/2026 09:39

so what makes a average journalist special ?
