Quite the listen. A worrying review of Keir Starmer’s approach to being to the top man in the job.

He's clearly completely unsuited to the role of PM. The only question is when is Labour going to put the country out of its misery as its not fair for everyone to have to put up with this non-leader for much longer. God knows what horror will replace him. We are in a bit of a bind.

It was very interesting

TessSaysYes · 14/03/2026 10:06

But what's the alternative: pick and mix from the far right Looney Bin.
No thanks.

Why the extremes?

I’m just here for the alliteration.

Nofeckingway · 14/03/2026 11:04

I am not even in the UK and have come to think that Starmer is playing it right . He doesn't feel the need to give rousing statements to anyone . Just a quiet refusal to raise to the bait . He's not giving in to Trump . Despite Trump's slander he doesn't retaliate as it's beneath him. I am growing to like his style on this histrionic war of words .

Love a bit of alliteration on a sunny Saturday morning!

Ah yes, that old chestnut. Let's settle for a shit PM because there is literally no-one else in the whole of the political establishment who could do a better job.

Do you not get sick of defending this current shit show? After we were told that change was coming and the grown ups were in the room? That aged well, didn't it?

TeenagersAngst · 14/03/2026 11:10

But to answer your question @AStonedRose , I'd give Shabana Mahmood a go.

Being PM is about far more than dealing with Trump.

How is he playing it right on domestic matters?

Ridiculous evasive word soup.

Who would be better then? Genuine question.

Perpetually trying to sit on the fence and not offend/upset anybody doesn't automatically equate to being a good PM.

Lots of leaders around Europe and elsewhere managed to refuse to rise to Trumps bait, but at same time at least some of them reacted to the developing sitiuation and were ready to deploy assets promptly to defend national interests.

Eh, I think he's doing a fairly decent job to be honest. Comms are a bit shit but most of the numbers are starting to go in the right direction. I think he's quietly competent domestically, and good at the foreign stuff.

While the polls are in the toilet at the moment, it's another 3 years till the election and the hopefully the improvements will be hard to ignore by then.

I agree with this. he’s got a lot more right than wrong. He has almost the entirety of the press against him. Good stuff is buried, and bad stuff (and there’s definitely a load of this) has been amplified

a lurch towards the reactionary right is not the answer. It’ll improve nothing at all for ordinary people

EasternStandard · 14/03/2026 11:35

I haven’t listened but he’s not doing too well. People talk about comms but the current attempts are not helping particularly. If anyone has seen the SM attempts.

BIossomtoes · 14/03/2026 11:43

I’ve just listened to it and the conclusion appeared to be that he’s obsessive about detail but can’t see the big picture. Which feels pretty accurate to me. He’s far better at geopolitics than on domestic issues so he’s really good at half the job, not particularly great at the other half. I think Mandelson will be his downfall as it’s emerged that Starmer appointed him without interviewing him and outsourced it to the Foreign Office.

What I took from the podcast was that he's not a political animal, he doesn't have instincts about what to do in certain situations. He's focused on process, and hopes that by reading lots of stuff, he can make the right decision.

The example of the Scunthorpe steel plant was a good one - his ministers had to prod him to make a decision. He was more focused on the technicalities behind the decision.

I don't think he really thought about where he wanted to take the country after he won the election. I think he was just focused on winning the election and that change would come because Labour had taken power from the chaotic Tories.

It’s his old job, process and briefs. But the gaping political holes are there. Including economic insight and instinct. However not many in Labour have it rn so no one to say you won’t get growth but hamper it with those policies.

SpottyAlpaca · 14/03/2026 11:51

Starmer may have his faults, but he has made exactly the right decision on Trump’s illegal Iran war. We will defend U.K. interests & help to defend our allies in the region we won’t attack Iran. Let’s get behind him & support him.

BIossomtoes · 14/03/2026 11:51

It’s not often we agree @TeenagersAngst but this is one of those rare occasions. Bet that scares you!
