Just being reported on BBC news now. The NEC has met and refused to allow Andy Burnham to stand in the by-election. This is looking very bad for Starmer.

Nope, nice try though. It’s my business when you support utter odd balls to run the country so you can keep living at working peoples expense. Stop doing it.

I am unable to have a sensible discussion with you, as you clearly don't know what you are talking about. Carry on and keep embarrassing yourself

Fluffyholeysocks · 25/01/2026 18:09

Getting back to the point of the thread - maybe Burnham could stand as an Independent 😁

I think it's something much simpler - they are just not up the the job of governance. I think the quality of our elected MP's has been on the slide for years. I look back at Blair's cabinet and see the likes of Jack Straw, Robin Cook, David Milliband, Margaret Beckett, Claire Short, Mo Mowlem. Do you see Nandy, Lammy and Reeves in the same league? I just see a lack of competence.

Edited

Definitely agree with you on this!

You are unable to justify with being called out, it’s because it’s an unjustifiable position. Start contributing, start putting something into the system then come back here explaining why you support Labour…then you can be taken seriously.

Perhaps they don’t want to stay on benefits and/or recognise the dangers of such large proportions of working age people living off the state?

No, not really. They think every single one of their woes is due to immigration. Most of them have little to no insight or ambition beyond that.

Ah!! racist and stupid? Ah you’ve got to love the classics. Good luck with pushing that one again

CheshireCat1 · 25/01/2026 18:43

It was the right decision to block him, the last thing we need is a costly campaign and election for a new mayor in Manchester. I like Andy Burnham but I think it was an error of judgment on his part.

I’m not a Labour voter, but I’d like to give AndyB a chance and see what he’s about. I remember him in lockdown and was impressed with how he stood up for his people.

Apart from women who want single sex spaces in Manchester, and victims of grooming gangs who wanted a full inquiry - he blocked both those things.

This sort of language always puzzles me. Insults, calling them thick, racists, flag shaggers, etc etc isn't going to bring people back to voting Labour again. The working class traditionally voted Labour, but times are changing. By not understanding the electorate and insulting them is one way to ensure they never vote Labour again. Both Labour and the Tories are struggling, Reform have grasped the opportunity to gain support. Why are people drawn to Reform? Because neither the Tories or Labour are appealing to them, neither offers anything at the moment, no hope, no talent, no pride in our politicians. The way to beat Reform is to get better quality politicians on all sides who listen to the electorate's concerns not insult them.

I think you've got your facts muddled. As Mayor, AB actually did commission inquiries into Manchester, Oldham and Rochdale but they didn't have the same legal powers that a national inquiry could, so the remits were limited and people couldn't be compelled to testify – so some police officers didn't turn up for it. It was Keir Starmer who ordered Labour MPs to vote against a Tory amendment asking for a new, full national inquiry. AB's response to the amendment was that it wasn't the right scope to really drill down on the issues his inquiries had raised.

Happyher · 25/01/2026 19:36

I think Burnham would make a terrible PM. Can’t see him doing well on the world stage. A bit like Boris Johnson. He’s already been rejected twice as party leader by members

TheAutumnCrow · 25/01/2026 19:45

MissMollyanna · 25/01/2026 17:48

It does very much strongly correlate with Labour supporters.

What does? Critiquing the Tories correlates with Labour supporters? Well I suppose it would do.

This lifelong Labour supporter certainly isn’t benefit dependent. We both claim our state pensions because we worked 40+ years to qualify for them - a fair amount goes straight back in tax.

What nonsense.

I don't know whether I would describe myself as a Labour supporter any more, but I've certainly voted for them in the past and I will always be left leaning. I haven't ever claimed benefits because I've been lucky enough not to need to. I do pay shed loads of tax and I'm perfectly happy to carry on doing so.

So you can fuck off with your lazy and inaccurate stereotyping.

That wouldn’t work for Burnham as he’d have to resign from the party and therefore couldn’t launch a leadership challenge

But I bet you worked in the public sector, Labour supporters are generally public sector or on benefits

Exactly

Honestly this thread feels like it’s been targeted by sock puppets. I live in a historically safe Cons seat that went Lib Dem recently and most people think Starmer is doing just fine, given the hand he was dealt. Agree that AB has gone too soon and what this country needs is stability.

My biggest worry for Keir is his own party, who don’t have the best track record with leaders!

Your constituency is probably an outlier. It must be, if you look at the polls which is the only thing we have to properly go on. Or are the polls also run by "sock puppets"?

LlynTegid · 26/01/2026 07:22

It comes across as an own goal for Labour to have blocked Andy Burnham's candidacy, much as I think he is better off to continue as Greater Manchester mayor.

Not really given polling, his rating is very low.

Of course everyone knows this, it’s why we have so many issues. The actual economics, the mechanics of generating the money or the people involved it doing so is not a feature of the thinking of general Labour supporters and therefore the party itself. It’s actually in Labour's interests to keep as much of the voting population reliant on the state for benefits or public sector employment as possible, everyone else is at best an inconvenience or in the case current Government actually opponents who need to be taxed out of existence until they see the light.

Divide and rule (badly).
