Just being reported on BBC news now. The NEC has met and refused to allow Andy Burnham to stand in the by-election. This is looking very bad for Starmer.

Sadly it’s impossible to undo well over a decade austerity, incompetence, corruption, cronyism and … Trussenomics… in 18 months.

All of the metrics I’ve see have shown the ship is turning- thank fuck- and if the pace of change is slow, it just goes to show the extent of the damage the Tories left to unpick.

I don't think those in the hospitality industry would agree with you right now

This isn't the school playground - there are endless threads listing them even on a forum full of Labour fangirls like this. Mistake after mistake followed by endless U-turns, a new psychodrama daily. Let's wait until May - Starmer's judgement day draws ever closer.

There are examples below anyway. Jobs and hospitality.

HornyHornersPinkyWinky · 25/01/2026 15:54

Applepe
All these posts gushing over Burnham. He pays lip service to whomever is in the room, tells them what they want to hear. He’ll be flip flopping all over the place.

Sounds very like Kier Starmer to be fair…

Sidebeforeself · 25/01/2026 15:55

And I hate ABs “King of The North” nickname . The North isn’t just Greater Manchester!

Well endless excuses have been made for the catastrophic job losses. Interesting how those of us actually running businesses don't agree.

My DS predicts that there will be a big drop in the percentage of under 25s voting. Except in areas where uni students will mobilise against Reform.

He predicts a big split along the lines of uni educated vs not.

Uni educated (especially those still in education) will go Green Party. Those who have left education at 18 or before, will go Reform.

He doesn’t know anyone who will vote Tory nor will vote for a Starmer Labour.

How about 16 -18 year-olds?

I hear you. I think some feel immune to those job losses.

I think Labour must be regretting the day the Unions put their backing behind Ed Miliband over David for the Labour leadership. It's been a slow motion car crash with the PLP making one poor decision after another ever since.

Yes, and I’ve been anti Ed Miliband ever since. If not for his arrogance and hubris in thinking he was PM material (he so obviously wasn’t), and aligning himself with the harder Left - when it’s well known that harder Left don’t win U.K. elections - we’d almost certainly have had David M, and not Cameron, and almost certainly not Brexit either.

IMO he’s been an utter disaster for the country.

Good question. It’s going to be really interesting to see which way the 16 and 17 year olds vote in the GE. And how high the turnout is.

Agree but then the Unions love Ange and I do not even want to contemplate her as PM. So I dont think the unions have learnt any lessons.

How have they “run the country into the ground” please? Can you point to three social or economic measures where labour have a) made things worse and b) it isn’t a lagged effect of Tory policy?

I’ll wait.

Why wait, just google the usual stuff. Unemployment, 30 year GILT yields, farmer suicides, tax burden, welfare spending, business confidence, school closures, GDP per capita, net tax payer exodus, gdp growth, cost of living. What measures are you actually using that show Labour have done anything but run the country into ground?

What May local elections? They are cancelled in our area.

these little places called Scotland and Wales
Labour on track to do badly in both

Just google the usual stuff and you will see the damage the Tories did while in office and how we are still struggling to cope with that. Anything the Labour government has done has to be seen in context of the hand they’ve been given and I’m no supporter of this government.

Starmer is a coward. Delaying local elections a d blocking a very worthy candidate because he's scared of his political stature.

I agree completely. Starmer and his cronies on the NEC have shown what spineless and cowardly wankers they are. I resigned from the Labour Party when Keir Starmer was elected as leader because I thought he would be a disastrous Prime Minister and have been proven right. After doing this, they deserve to lose the seat to Reform.

Yes, it’s quite obvious that Labour’s remaining demographic support is basically anyone who doesn’t work and a few public sector workers. I expected them to be bad, but it’s amazing just how fast they’ve managed this.

No, I was just venting about how he’s being portrayed as some sort of saviour. Manchester is a fab and thriving city but the same cant be said of the wider GM area. I visit quite regularly and there is still a lot of household poverty, crime and anti social behaviour.

Now I accept that nowhere can be perfect and equally he isn’t to blame for all it’s problems but there seems to be a belief that he’s a miracle worker and Manchester was saved simply by him becoming Mayor so he’ll do the same for the country.

lets start with unemployment, why is the rate up 30% from last year? How did the Tories manage that ? How long is Labour in power before you’ll hold them responsible?

Ok instead of criticising who do you believe would make a better government right now given the options we have?
