What is it that riles people up about immigration so much?

I’m really curious at why some people get so annoyed over immigrants. Sure, I’m all for LEGAL migration no matter where the immigrant comes from and I agree that migration should be controlled / monitored to ensure criminals aren’t entering without a solid work purpose. My maternal grandparents were from Jamaica and they worked so hard.

I’m always so happy to see any doctor / nurse in the NHS whether they’re Indian, African, Caribbean, English and I couldn’t ever imagine getting so upset and angry about their ethnicity. I also don’t understand why people get so angry about asylum seekers being temporarily housed in hotels whilst they await their decision

Why are people so annoyed about migrants being housed in hotels? How can they actually be affected by it? On the news it looks like they’re being accommodated at Holiday Inns, not exactly anywhere where the typical Brit would take a staycation. It’s pretty mundane and boring. It’s not The Ritz.

I work, pay my taxes but it doesn’t bother me in the slightest if my tax goes towards that because tax is inevitable and something we never see. It’s just so unavoidable so why complain? I guess it’s like my student loan. Equally, how come these people aren’t annoyed that our taxes can fund royal house renovations or their security etc… I don’t see people protesting outside Buckingham palace? Also what about council housing in the UK? I don’t see people protesting about the fact the council literally gives subsidised housing to brits because they can’t afford it? I’m not sure if the tax payers money go towards this (I might need to educate myself on it) but surely that’s a bigger burden on taxpayers money.

I understand the argument that a country might lose its ‘identity’ with mass immigration. I saw a video with someone saying Japan is Japan because it’s more enough wholly Japanese. India is India because it’s wholly Indian. I get it to some extent, maybe we aren’t typically white and British like we were 59 years ago; but it’s still not enough to convince me that immigration is negative because what would actually happen if we did take all of the ‘foreigners’ outside of the NHS, TFL, cleaners etc etc … I wonder if they’d be enough Brits to fill their spaces? This isn’t sarcastic, I’m curious if anyone knows the answer

A lot of hotels were not thriving or even being used tho, before being taken over. I used to live near Epping 17 years ago and remember the Bell hotel, it was empty pretty much! So would you rather people didn't get a council home?

You think it’s ok to treat people like this then? Are the people who object to their weddings being cancelled at short notice racist bigots too?

Now hotel cancels weddings to make room for asylum seekers

The Best Western Cresta Court Hotel in Altrincham - owned by a group chaired by former BBC director-general Greg Dyke - was closed to paying guests on Monday.

@sleepwouldbenice - I didn’t say it was a one stop resolution but surely any fool can see that placing a limit on the thousands of extra non entitled people per week might help a little?

They are given a lot more than some of our own homeless in need. My nephew tried to return here after a few years abroad and was told he could not claim any benefits despite being a tax payer for years before he left.
It’s the numbers though - thousands weekly. How is anyone not concerned by that?

I have not said it I am not concerned. I think genuine, fact driven, considered discussions and actions on both legal and illegal immigration is essential. The problems will only get worse with climate change

I just hate the vitriol that comes with it and the idea that its the root of all our problems...And the lies, misinformation and distorted facts

And again when you say 1000s a week. On average its not. 38k ÷ 52 is not 1000s.

It's lack of integration that concerns me. Not so much who they are or where from. Though I admit I'd prefer to see women and children from war torn countries than single men.
I grew up in an area which saw a big influx of immigration in the post war years from Poland, Ukraine and the Carribbean. Later the Ugandans who were expelled. Still friends with many of them now. All embraced the British way of life and blended in.
The thing about immigration now is people living in enclaves of their old country.

Sorry but do you really blame them for sticking together given the anti-migrant feeling?

One of the main reasons that many people who came to the UK in the 60s / 70s / 80s ended up living nearby each other is because if they moved to a “white area” their homes were attacked with racist graffiti, dog shit (or worse) put through their letter box and they were constantly abused, told to go home and made to feel completely unsafe. Their children were bullied and life was made a living hell. I’ve heard countless stories from friends whose parents lived through this.

Do you though? Obviously dodging an important question. The intimidating men in our local town are a serious threat to mine.

It's not an important question, it is your fears not facts asking and you are just trying to point score when none to be had imo. Your daughter is more likely to be harmed by someone they know than an asylum seeker, that is your perceived threat.

I fear the Andrew Tates of this world, the Wayne Cousins a whole lot more for the safety of women and girls, sexual harassment is on the rise. Not to say that I agree with housing people who we know little about in communities but the reality is often less troublesome than the worry. For example, Bell hotel that kicked off - they've been housing asylum and homeless for years, until that once incident with the young girl of him trying to kiss/grope her. How many women or girls have been subject to unwanted touching in Epping by people who are not asylum seekers? I tell you what, at least that man is going to jail for it, which is more than can be said for a lot of sexual predators. I never saw any outrage by people when those other women were attacked tho, did you?

And who can forget the sign in the window, No Irish, no blacks, no dogs?

People have not changed at all, other than for the worse.

I am not going to click on any link of theirs. Of course its crap to have your wedding cancelled but the hotel simply can't have been making much money otherwise it would have stayed as a hotel

Maybe the locals should've used the hotel more for it to survive..

Wow, why isn't this all over the news? Jumping on teenage girls in the streets, raping them? What, on the street? Thousands of cases you say? Why am I only hearing about it on mumsnet? And majority are pedophiles??
Sharia law forced on us? When did that start, I must have missed it??

And seriously if true, I do hope you called the police if your daughter was being filmed by a man hiding in the hedges. It's not illegal to film anyone out on a public place in the UK, but hiding in hedges is suss.

Mrsmunchofmunchington · 21/09/2025 23:08

9/11 changed the world.
Followed by 7/7 on our own soil carried out by homegrown terrorists.

Prior to this overt racism was contained a small section of the population whose views were based on nothing but ill educated historical prejudice.
The majority of society thought of them as fringe nutters and generally the country was tolerant and life was peaceful.

After these dreadful attacks that changed irrevocably.

Many people felt we had nursed a viper in our breast.
It was beyond belief that young british people, educated, housed and looked after here after their parents had come over as immigrants were prepared to carry out mass murder against us in the name of islam.

There are of course financial pressures which make people think immigrants should be excluded when they, as british citizens, are not getting their needs and rights met.

Also the clash of cultures, most especially archaic attitudes to women.

I don’t think everybody who is worried about immigration is far right or racist at all, but certainly the actual racists are gleefully exploiting the situation.

But without islamic terrorism I think the far right would not find such fertile ground.

I won't click the daily hate either. But, which pays more? Being a hotel or being paid by government? It's a business. Yes, sad for the couple of course, not fair, but this is the hotel owners issue, not the immigrants, the hotel owner is using them as a cash cow opportunity.

I don’t think the Mail will have made the story up but If you can’t bring yourself to click on the link that’s up to you. Pp asked why people are upset and then dismissed the answer because “the hotels are struggling anyway”. Of course treating people like shit is going to make them resentful. People plan for years to have the perfect wedding and to have that taken away at the last moment would be devastating. OP has asked why people are “riled up”. Well who wouldn’t be riled up if this happened to them or a member of their family?

Why is that immigration fault, and not the fault of the greedy hotel owner? Am struggling to see the connection here in this thread about immigrants.
So, to play devil's advocate for a moment, if a hotel isn't an immigration hotel and goes bust, just like many places up and down the country at the moment, that an acceptable reason to you for them cancelling a wedding last moment? I daresay the Daily Mail wouldn't have written about it.

No it’s just under 1000 a week illegal immigration and 15 500 a week regular immigration this year so far, about 71 000 a month,

The hotel would have probably closed anyway

Its not just under 1000, its considerably under 1000, and definitely not 1000s ( plural). I agree its going up again
We were again discussing illegal migration so now trying to flip to talk about legal and illegal migration is disingenuous at best

I was unemployed for the first time in my life for a few months when I moved to Leeds to be with my love a fair few years ago now. I'd been self-employed for a long long time but when I tried to claim some help while looking for another job, it was refused (other than £8 a week for my NI payments) because I'd not paid the right amount of NI. The thing is, when self-employed can only pay one type of NI !!

Do I blame asylum seekers for this? No. Do I resent them for getting a hotel room? No. If anything to resent it's the system. However, there is absolutely nothing to say that if there were no asylum seekers costing the UK money that I would've been able to claim, or your nephew would've got anything. Would there be fewer homeless people in need? Probably not. Comparisons like this, while kind of understandable are not actually relevant.

ACynicalDad · 22/09/2025 00:43

Migrants who intend to work hard, pay more in tax than they take out and accept the dominant culture of the country they move to and live within it are very welcome by almost everyone. Many people don’t like those they think come here to take what they can, live in ghettos and try to change the fabric of the nation in negative ways.
