What is it that riles people up about immigration so much?

I’m really curious at why some people get so annoyed over immigrants. Sure, I’m all for LEGAL migration no matter where the immigrant comes from and I agree that migration should be controlled / monitored to ensure criminals aren’t entering without a solid work purpose. My maternal grandparents were from Jamaica and they worked so hard.

I’m always so happy to see any doctor / nurse in the NHS whether they’re Indian, African, Caribbean, English and I couldn’t ever imagine getting so upset and angry about their ethnicity. I also don’t understand why people get so angry about asylum seekers being temporarily housed in hotels whilst they await their decision

Why are people so annoyed about migrants being housed in hotels? How can they actually be affected by it? On the news it looks like they’re being accommodated at Holiday Inns, not exactly anywhere where the typical Brit would take a staycation. It’s pretty mundane and boring. It’s not The Ritz.

I work, pay my taxes but it doesn’t bother me in the slightest if my tax goes towards that because tax is inevitable and something we never see. It’s just so unavoidable so why complain? I guess it’s like my student loan. Equally, how come these people aren’t annoyed that our taxes can fund royal house renovations or their security etc… I don’t see people protesting outside Buckingham palace? Also what about council housing in the UK? I don’t see people protesting about the fact the council literally gives subsidised housing to brits because they can’t afford it? I’m not sure if the tax payers money go towards this (I might need to educate myself on it) but surely that’s a bigger burden on taxpayers money.

I understand the argument that a country might lose its ‘identity’ with mass immigration. I saw a video with someone saying Japan is Japan because it’s more enough wholly Japanese. India is India because it’s wholly Indian. I get it to some extent, maybe we aren’t typically white and British like we were 59 years ago; but it’s still not enough to convince me that immigration is negative because what would actually happen if we did take all of the ‘foreigners’ outside of the NHS, TFL, cleaners etc etc … I wonder if they’d be enough Brits to fill their spaces? This isn’t sarcastic, I’m curious if anyone knows the answer

It’s happened under every Government, starting with New Labour. I say left wing because it’s been very much a left wing argument that it’s only racist or stupid people who point out the down sides of mass immigration. These are facts. Farage is the inevitable outcome, there will be many many more Farages to come over the next few decades as the demographic changes kick in.

It's not the concern over immigration that makes people say 'racist' or 'thick', it's the reasons given for concern that are actually based on racism or lies.

Nigel Farage has been pulled up on lies a fair few times. Do his followers care? No. Farage doesn't care either because job done, lies told so many times it becomes people's truths, this is scary. We, as a country, are overdue some decent politicians quite frankly.

Volume of people on boats last year was c 38k ( although I agree should be nil)
In what way will that lead to a devastating issue for our country in 5 years.?

So an extra 38k people a year for our already struggling NHS, education and housing system to deal with. You don’t think that’s an issue!?

  1. Ignorance
  2. believing the crap in right wing newspapers
  3. a feeling of disappointment at their own life that they can mask with anger instead
Sandyshandy · 21/09/2025 22:04

Huge numbers of young men who don’t share the norms and values of our country hanging round all over the place? Of course people don’t like it. I don’t expect eg Sudanese people would like it if loads of young British men arrived in Sudan and changed their home town to become like a version of Britain… a Costa and a church on every highstreet.

It’s the fact that they aren’t t coming with any intention of integrating- they aren’t here for our freedom of speech, democracy values etc. Some seem to actively oppose our norms. They are just here for the money and an easier life! Fundamental Islam isn’t compatible with our norms and values (not least in how women are treated) so of course there is a conflict where there is a sense that there are large numbers of Islamic fundamentalists in an area.

One reason is because then the hotel can no longer be used as a hotel. In many small towns there will only be one hotel and locals use them to go out for meals or as wedding venues or for other events with friends and family staying there when visiting. Also the local economy no longer benefits from tourists spending money locally and the people who once worked in them are laid off with workers brought in from outside the community so locals lose job opportunities.

A lot of hotels were not thriving or even being used tho, before being taken over. I used to live near Epping 17 years ago and remember the Bell hotel, it was empty pretty much! So would you rather people didn't get a council home?

Wouldn't it be nice if the government processed their claims faster than... years?
Blame lies with governments.

Because people like to be surrounded by "their own kind". And some people see immigration as a threat to the "safety" a homogeneous society provides.

Also, some people are very proud of their heritage and the sense of identity and connection they feel through that identity. Consequently, they feel anxious that their heritage, the identity of the culture they associate with, is going to be irreparably changed if large numbers of "foreign" people move to their country.

Would Japan still be "Japanese" if 20% of the population were made up of people who weren't born there and weren't ethnically Asian?

To some, these are very important issues. You might disagree or not share their concerns, but that doesn't make those concerns any less valid.

Nigel Farage is a symptom. Once the baby boomers start to die off, white British people are on the way to becoming the largest minority rather than a majority which will take around 30 years. Politics will inevitably veer towards ethnic sectarianism, I’ve got a feeling you’ll be looking back on Farage with warm fuzzy feelings compared to what happens over the next 3 decades,

I agree with your first part, it's human nature to fear a stranger but we should allow reason to overcome this.

Your second paragraph, nobody has been able to really truly explain what heritage and identity means in the UK. Just get trite such as 'well, it's fish n chips innit'. (Neither of those foods originated in the UK). I'd love to know what both of those things really are.

Third, yes of course it would still be Japanese. Why wouldn't it be?

No, concerns are valid and should be listened to, but also the reverse too. When things explained in a truthful, factual manner people don't want to hear it.

@sleepwouldbenice - I didn’t say the hotels are 4*. They are given phones albeit via charities, they are given money. Not peddling rubbish. There are thousands coming in every week and 1 or 2 being sent back, clearly it is not sustainable.

You exaggerated all aspects implying they are given a wonderful welcome

I'll let you think about it.

I dont need to think about it. Although of course the number should be less, I understand numbers and statistics very well and I know that life in the UK wouldn't miraculously turn around if it was nil

Shellyash · 21/09/2025 22:31

30k illegal immigrants year to date is a average size community, UK doesn't have the space or resources for this year on year. 180k since 2018. It is destroying the country.
Legal ok, but we live in a small land so needs control

Happyjoe · 21/09/2025 22:34

ThisCalmLimeZebra · 21/09/2025 22:30

Well the white British demographic change is a fact, I guess the timeline is up for debate + or - a few years. https://www.msn.com/en-gb/news/uknews/britain-s-identity-crisis-white-british-to-become-minority-by-2063-as-immigration-surges/ar-AA1G6foI?ocid=bingnews&apiversion=v2&noservercache=1&domshim=1&renderwebcomponents=1&wcseo=1&batchservertelemetry=1&noservertelemetry=1

The ethnic sectarianism is a prediction, would you not agree it’s heading that way?

Did you really just give me something from a GB news presenter as a fact? Even says 'could' not will? Can you please find something from someone who is neutral? Thanks.

YelloDaisy · 21/09/2025 22:35

People naively think the immigrants are one homogenous group who will settle into U.K. life given the chance - the Sunni and Shia Muslims have centuries long antagonism, arranged marriages, female genital mutilialtion in parts of Africa, Hindu / Muslim problems in Kashmir, etc We still have Protestant /Catholic sectarianism in parts of Scotland. It’s insane to allow huge numbers in as you also import their existing problems.

Inastatus · 21/09/2025 22:35

sleepwouldbenice · 21/09/2025 22:26

They are given a lot more than some of our own homeless in need. My nephew tried to return here after a few years abroad and was told he could not claim any benefits despite being a tax payer for years before he left.
It’s the numbers though - thousands weekly. How is anyone not concerned by that?

We have by far more legal immigrants than illegal. Over a million a year migrated to the UK until last year. This surely has far more an impact on our infrastructure? All of that is 'controlled'.

It's one factor in a much much longer list. Underfunding in general, critical recruitment issues, aging population with increased acuity etc etc
It really isn't the one stop resolution that you are told it is

Yep sorry, see below. You are acting like this is news to you or is controversial in some way. Did you think it would be later or earlier?

Who cares that Britain is on course to be ‘minority white’?

As a study of migration, birth and death rates in the UK points to the white British population becoming a minority by 2063, Anand Menon says the only debate it ought to spark is not about immigration, but integration
