They're comparing Trump to Starmer because Starmer has made it illegal to mess with the Union Jack, has got the army on the streets of London, is suing media companies if they criticise him, has sacked thousands of civil servants, has agents on the ground grabbing people off the street, is overriding international and national law, has pardoned thousands of criminals, is trying to control universities and scientific information, has filled the courts with sycophants, is stripping people of British citizenship and is paying billions to fund a genocide. They're exactly the same OP, can't you see it!

Except none of those things are happening in the UK.

The situation in the US astounds me op. The speed at which a democratic country can sink into near total autocracy is shocking.

Gavin Newsom said recently that he doesn't think Trump will allow the 2028 election to go ahead, I don't think he is bonkers.

Redrosesposies · 31/08/2025 19:45

"If our PM was stepping into fascist authoritarianism and dictatorship then YES would definitely want to rise up"

An acquaintance of mine who is generally quite level headed and centrist is worried that Starmer is determined to bankrupt the country then have to go to the IMF and subsequently get back into the EU by the back door.
He is also concerned that the current unrest and division is being deliberately ramped up in order to invoke COVID style policing as precursor to martial law (a la Zelenksy) so he can stay in power.
I do keep telling him to stop believing everything he reads in the media and on his somewhat limited X(twitter) world but a little bit of me can't help thinking he might have a point.

I don't think it's the US we need to concern ourselves with.

You voted for authoritarianism and project 2025

nice one

Edited

Actually I voted for mass deportations and mass incarceration. Well, at least we’re getting one of those.

Economy is actually pretty good, all things considered. Inflation has stabilized. Unemployment is low. America has been growing while other developed economies are weakening.

Not really sure what British people are so upset by tbh

CatHairEveryWhereNow · 31/08/2025 19:52

Watching US reactors on you tube they seem oblivious to a lot of it - like what ICE has been up to and thus why tourist aren't visiting. Their media doesn't seem to keep them informed or ask decent questions and it's very divided poltically so playing to their audience so there not enough cross over.

They do seem to be getting upset and worried about grocery prices - and layoffs if it's them, but even farmers or bussiness owner affected don't always make the connections with Trumps polices.

I think many are focued on their own situation and surviving or just feel helpless and many think things will go back to normal at some point not that global supply chains are long term changing.

SpottyAardvark · 31/08/2025 20:07

Trump IS the uprising.

White working class Americans decided they’d had enough of seeing their skilled manufacturing jobs being outsourced to China. They decided they’d had enough of uncontrolled mass immigration. And of liberal politicians putting the interests of minorities ahead of theirs then calling them ‘deplorable’ for objecting to it. And of virtue-signalling ‘woke’ elites policing their language and telling them that their concerns made them racists.

Whatever you & I might think of Trump, his character & his actual policies, the reality is that he has comprehensively won the argument on many of these issues, most obviously on immigration & China.

Dappy777 · 31/08/2025 20:11

Oh, for god's sake, Trump isn't Stalin. He's just a vulgar, ignorant narcissist. I got the impression he didn't even want to be president this time around. He'll be gone in a few years.

I wish people wouldn't keep throwing around labels like "authoritarian" and "right-wing". I saw someone who wanted a rapist deported described as "far-right". Some people really need to read a history book.

CorneliaCupp · 31/08/2025 21:24

Here is a none exhaustive list of things Trump has done that are straight from the autocrats playbook:

  • Repeatedly questioned the legitimacy of the electoral process—especially during the 2020 election. Refused to commit to a peaceful transfer of power, culminating in the January 6th Capitol riot*.
  • Attacked the judiciary, especially judges who ruled against him.
  • Attempted to use the Department of Justice to pursue political goals (e.g., pressuring DOJ to investigate political rivals).
  • Routinely referred to the media as the "enemy of the people."
  • Dismissed unfavorable coverage as "fake news."
  • Attempted to ban reporters from the White House or revoke press credentials
  • Emphasized "America First" nationalism, often at the expense of alliances and global cooperation.
  • Blamed immigrants for crime and economic issues; enacted strict immigration policies (e.g., family separations at the border).
  • Used racialized language around COVID-19 (e.g., “China virus”).
  • Focused intensely on personal loyalty, often prioritizing it over competence in appointments.
  • Encouraged rallies and public adoration; emphasized personal branding.
  • Claimed only he could solve certain problems ("I alone can fix it").
  • Spread falsehoods repeatedly—about election fraud, COVID-19 treatments, etc.
  • Pressured officials to change or misrepresent data (e.g., hurricane maps altered with a Sharpie).
  • Promoted conspiracy theories (e.g., QAnon, "deep state").
  • Deployed federal law enforcement against protesters in 2020, often without identification badges.
  • Suggested the military could be used to suppress domestic unrest.
  • Pardoned war criminals against the military’s own legal advice
  • Used presidential powers expansively—e.g., emergency declarations to fund the border wall.
  • Pressured state officials (like in Georgia) to “find votes” after losing the 2020 election

Not to mention sending troops onto the streets of DC, deporting people who are in the US legally, taking huge gifts from foreign nations, using his position to enrich himself and his family ...

Trump with Kennedy is endangering every America's health...

Not to mention damaging health across world by cutting USAID.......

How can this be a legacy anyone is proud to stand with

I'm guessing that America won't rise up. Too lazy. Too delusional secure. Conservative commentator David Brooks said he's baffled as to why Americans aren't filling the streets, as in other countries.

On the other hand, a half-hour ago, someone posted that there's a huge anti-fascist protest in Washington going on. Who knows?

coxesorangepippin · 07/09/2025 02:00

They won't???

WHERE? I'm in the USA right now and I think the issue is that there is no opposition leadership at all. Trump convinced the Republicans to let him ride as their legitimate candidate, party leader, and President. The Democrats say her haw at all about it - which is weird as fuck; the two parties always have a back and forth with the opposition trying to present a credible alternative to the party in power. Bernie Sanders is out on tour and he was in my state a few days ago; people listen to what he says but he can't counter the fact that Democrats have not in any way effectively opposed or tried to oppose Trump. Which is weird as fuck because it is the role of the opposition to oppose.

This! They did rise up against the appalling corrupt, cynical (cruelly keeping Joe Biden in place as a useful idiot) incompetent wokecracy.

I don't think there's any other country where a treasonous, authoritarian paedophile could hold office. The US is sick.

Trump is right wing and authoritarian. Just because you don't like certain words doesn't mean the rest of us shouldn't use them appropriately.

It's what the US has done to offset the loss of slavery. They have the highest incarceration rates in the world (with vast racial disparities) and then can use the incarcerated for cheap labor.

This isn't even a Trump thing, just how the US operates.

When will America rise up?

Here’s a perfect example. Ukrainian girl escapes a literal war zone only to be randomly stabbed to death by a homeless man who has been on and out of jail for years.

As she was a poor foreigner, she didn’t know she shouldn’t use public transportation, because American cities don’t do anything to protect innocent people. They reserve their pity for the poor, bedraggled criminals ….

He should have been locked away forever after the first five or so felonies, just so tired of this shit happening in my home country.

I think they already are, even farmers are starting to feel the damage.... America is waking up to a Trump nightmare. Trump is imposing martial law and it's costing a fortune. You wait until the litigation starts and Americans are hit with legal bills.

Meanwhile China just put on a display that would have unnerved many American military hawks. Suddenly America is now very beatable and China hasn't invaded a single country to do it. Its political power now stretches as far as Africa and South America..... meanwhile America is embroiled in Gaza, Iran, Syria, Russia, Iraq...and has upset it's allies.

The world is turning and Americans need to wake up to the shade.

British people need to take a critical look at what's happening in America and consider what Farage represents. Farage is part of a long campaign to undermine British politics and the roots of all this is the down to something called chaos economics. Billionaires or at least certain ones are known to fuel division in order to make money on the markets. One particular hedge fund manager owns GB news and his partner funds Black lives matter and a group that helps migrants....

PamIsAVolleyballChamp · 31/08/2025 17:02

But didn't the majority of Americans want the Trump? That's why he's in power?

It wasn’t a huge majority.
Trump got 49.8% of the popular vote.
Harris got 48.3% of the popular vote.
Trump got 77,302,580 votes
Kamala got 75,017,613 votes
Trump got 312 electoral votes
Kamala got 226 electoral votes.
