gardensparkle · 31/08/2025 17:00

Against the ever increasing authoritarianism of trump&co??? Or will they leave it until too late???

So many words of wisdom from wise folks

So little action

The ones most likely to rise up are the ones who voted Trump in. They're the ones who are armed to the teeth and preparing for a civil war.

PamIsAVolleyballChamp · 31/08/2025 17:02

But didn't the majority of Americans want the Trump? That's why he's in power?

MigGril · 31/08/2025 17:07

I don't think that a lot of Trump supporters are happy with him, as he promised to make cost of living cheap again but it's just gotten worse under Trump.

That said some are also totally blinded by him and think he will make it alright in the long run. I think the latter voters are more dangerous as those are the ones who would happily see him stay in the White House.

Cloanie · 31/08/2025 17:08

They voted him in.

LarkspurLane · 31/08/2025 17:09

Cloanie · 31/08/2025 17:08

They voted him in.

Many who did are unhappy with what he has done.

Well not the majority. Not even the majority of the people who voted.

But I don’t think there will be any big uprising against him.

LarkspurLane · 31/08/2025 17:09

Bit like with starmer then.

Not really.

LarkspurLane · 31/08/2025 17:09

Well tough shit. He wasn't exactly an unknown quantity, so acting all surprised now is disingenuous.

Jasrai · 31/08/2025 17:15

There has been some movement but not enough to make a difference. Either Americans don't know what he's doing, approve or it's a frog in water situation where they're not aware of the danger. The Trump supporters I've spoken to are like members of a cult; they simply can't see what he's doing wrong.

LarkspurLane · 31/08/2025 17:17

Some Americans I know have said they feel less comfortable openly criticising him as they are actually afraid of what others think now. This I think in new is a modern democracy.

Exactly like this although you won’t get many people on MN who will admit it. I don’t understand people in the UK and their obsession with Trump when our own government is turning into a bigger shit show every day.

gardensparkle · 31/08/2025 18:25

So how are you comparing starmer with trump?

I'm referring to trump acting as dictator

Not whether I like particular policies

OP posts:
gardensparkle · 31/08/2025 18:26

USA having fascist authoritarian dictator regime has huge implications for democracies across the world

That's why we are talking about it

That happened here in very recent history with gender ideology. To a degree, it’s still not easy to be openly gender critical.

They're comparing Trump to Starmer because Starmer has made it illegal to mess with the Union Jack, has got the army on the streets of London, is suing media companies if they criticise him, has sacked thousands of civil servants, has agents on the ground grabbing people off the street, is overriding international and national law, has pardoned thousands of criminals, is trying to control universities and scientific information, has filled the courts with sycophants, is stripping people of British citizenship and is paying billions to fund a genocide. They're exactly the same OP, can't you see it!

tarheelbaby · 31/08/2025 19:18

Seriously??
(would you want the UK population to stage an uprising...? and what issue would be so egregious as to unite them? What would spur all of the UK to revolt ...) I love how the good folk of MN are so outraged on behalf of the Americans ...

Most Americans, on both sides of the trump divide, were horrified by the 6 January attack on Congress and do not want that to become a regular option. They value considered, sensible rule of law and peaceful transfer of power.

So, no, the Americans will not be rising up to overthrow the trump government. (or any government) In some ways, the current government is no different from the average republican government and, at the next election, if the democrats win, lots of current/recently enacted legislation will be summarily overturned, just as happens when the republicans come to power after a few terms of democratic control of the House, Senate, Electorate or Judiciary. If you study American government/politics, you'll see that variety is the spice for the Americans: the government swings back and forth on the same issues every 8yrs or so.

There are a lot of different ways to be an American; there are lots of different opinions, lots of different realities, even with Trummp as president, but none of them makes me or any other American think there will be an uprising. The reasons for wanting or not wanting Trump are too varied to coalesce into a mass of impassioned citizens able to effect any change and Americans across all stripes were horrified by the Jan 6th events. If nothing else, they can agree that THAT is NOT who they are or what they want.

Some groups of non-uprising Americans:
They are sufficiently comfortable to ride it out

They know about the issues and don't care
They don't know they are being screwed/should be outraged
In a few years, there will be another election so they'll just wait til (Trump's) contract expires
All the above is true for many Britons too ...

A lot of us generally approve of the direction of the country. I am getting a lot of what I voted for, why the fuck would I want to change that?

If our PM was stepping into fascist authoritarianism and dictatorship then YES would definitely want to rise up
