Lifetime Social Housing Tenancies

Am I wrong or being unreasonable to think that this new policy that Labour are bringing in is very unfair?

I come from a poor-ish background (as in no one in my wider family has any money). However, my mum and Dad did fairly okay and managed to move up the property ladder (through sheer hard work and sacrifice). My dad died a few years ago and so now it’s just my mom. We never received any benefits - and now my DH and I live in a house and pay a high interest rate (thanks Truss) and I don’t know if we will ever pay off our house (if I am to have children and go part time), so we will need to downsize. We don’t qualify for any benefits either but we are in the squashed middle, so we really feel it when anything rises in cost and don’t get any help.

I feel really cross that someone can benefit from social housing for a lifetime, no matter how much they go on to earn, and then if they pass away, they can pass it down as an asset.

I have a friend who’s parents came to this country, got given social housing, their children paid it off (40% discount) and now they all get to keep a £650k house in London. It doesn’t seem fair to me at all. I feel really disillusioned living in the UK.

For the sake of balance:.

  • it seems to be more complex in terms of funding e.g. Cross-subsidisation: Profits from market-rate housing developments are used to fund affordable housing projects.
how is social housing funded

My understanding is that council housing finance is actually quite a complex system, especially as we now have various schemes like affordable housing, affordable rent, housing benefit, shared-ownership etc.

And again OP - instead of trying to blame peopld who are in social housing, look at yourself instead: you chose to buy a house. If you cannot now afford it that’s your problem.

This is an example of an inappropriate post which detracts from what has been in general an interesting discussion. OP’s financial situation has nothing to do with this thread.

I think if you read back through OPs posts she references her personal financial situation as an argument against lifetime tenancies on yhd basis of ‘it’s not fair’ bevause if she fell in hard times she couldn’t afford her mortgage.

Feel free to read.

I have done. I mean, I did think it was obvious, but I’ll explain simply. It was your comment “if you cannot now afford it..” was what I objected to since OP hasn’t hinted she can’t afford to pay her mortgage.

As a real life example… there are many other people in exactly the same boat as me. That doesn’t mean I wish to “kick people out of social housing,” or that I somehow hate people in social housing or HA.

Either way, personally attacking me isn’t conducive to this discussion - you are simply doing it to insult me and be hateful.

And actually @cloudyblueglass it isn’t “just my problem,” we are all part of this society. I’m critiquing the system in this discussion.
How about I say the same thing to people in temporary accommodation then… “don’t care, not my problem.” How ridiculous.

I do actually. But you are another one who just seems out to get me on this thread, and it’s very tiresome.

100%. How was a post on this thread telling me I don’t care in any way relevant to the discussion on this thread? That is a personal attack.

It was a question duck. Bless you though that you reported it ❤️

I'm out now. Honestly its been wild. Glad that lifetime tenancies are and will continue to be a thing. But you carry on being angry!

You have literally complained that you’re not afforded the same as someone offered lifetime tenancy (not always the case) - and yet aren’t willing to go through what it takes to (potentially) end up with one.

I’ve read your posts.
You chose the mortgage route - presumably because you wett in a position to raise the funds for a deposit - most social housing tenants could never dream of raising such funds.

And whilst you may not value communities over capitalism, others do.

If you’re so upset about your own circumstances being in the squeezed middie and council/HA tenants as a vehicle for complaint of unfairness I suggest you get yourself into social housing. I work for a local authority - happy to guide you through the process.

But the people who are in temporary accommodation mostly end up in social housing and your moaning about social housing.?

Pimlico Journal is a notorious right wing publication where few of its contributors have sufficient courage in their convictions to put their names to the articles they write. It’s not a credible source.

Rather than rolling out insults, why don’t you actually add something meaningful to the discussion then - you know, as a counter-argument? Do you know what that is?

Many posters including myself have told you how social housing works and the reasons why. You’ve embroiled yourself in an argument of your own making just to kick the hornet’s nest. You carry on soaking up right wing misinformation designed to stir up division and hatred. I’m out.
