Yoo-hoo! Melania!

MsAmerica · 17/05/2025 02:23

There was quite a bit of interest when I'd posted about Melania Trump, so I thought I'd share this. She generally comes off as the most aloof, least involved First Lady (although now set to monetize her name), but there was another article about her being so absent. She was not even accompanying Trump when he had to be in court from his trial.

She's still using her son as an excuse, claiming she needs to be in New York (i.e. not with her husband). But I don't know for how long she can claim this, because most kids, by the time they're 18 and in college - normal kids, that is - don't necessarily want to spend a lot of time with their mothers.

A Most Sensitive Subject in the White House: Where Is Melania?
By Shawn McCreesh

Every marriage has its highs and lows, but as with so many other things, the Trumps are in a league of their own. In the span of just a few months last year, the couple endured a public trial about his philandering, two assassination attempts and a presidential campaign...

She was asked where she planned to spend most of her time this term.

“I will be in the White House,” she answered. “And, you know, when I need to be in New York, I will be in New York. When I need to be in Palm Beach, I will be in Palm Beach. But my first priority is, you know, to be a mom, to be a first lady, to be a wife. And once we are in on Jan. 20, you serve the country.”

I don't understand the fuss about where MT is and where she isn't. She hasn't been elected to do anything.
Maybe it's more of an American thing?
I can't even remember the name of keir starmers wife and certainly wouldn't recognise her.

VillaDiodati · 17/05/2025 09:00

Why the obsession with Melania Trump? I knew it would be you Ms America before I even opened this thread. Do you get huge pleasure from goading people to be horrible about a woman I presume you've never met? Why not read a book or go for a walk or maybe listen to some music that moves you? Why not get a life?

This!

Well, I'm interested and a Brit.
Only because I watched Netflix's The Residence and am now reading the book the non-fiction parts were based on, so am fascinated with all things White House. I wonder how the staff view them compared with the Bidens.

noblegiraffe · 17/05/2025 11:24

The less I see of Trump's family members, the better.

Not sure why family members of the US president end up being eyed up for future presidencies either. The Bushes actually did it. Clinton was president so his wife also had a go. People talking about Michelle Obama running. Don't the US know that nepotism is bad?

MaynowJunesoon · 17/05/2025 11:26

Trump's biographer says the relationship between the two is purely transactional. Melania will do the bare minimum to fulfil her part of the pact. And there's nothing Trump can do about it because he's scared of her.

Paraphrasing from Rest is Politics interview with the writer.

Technically, you're absolutely right, and it does sometimes come up that being FLOTUS is not a paying job. That's been particularly relevant in recent years when First Ladies like Michelle Obama and Jill Biden had been actually working at their own jobs.
But in the U.S., the First Lady has been expected to be in the public eye, especially as role model, especially with some pet cases, in recent years. She is also expected to be adoringly at her husband's side (Nancy Reagan being an exemplar of this).
It's Melania's bad luck that she's the least "qualified" of First Ladies recently (the least educated, for one thing), is known to have no intellectual interests, and has shown signs of not particularly liking her husband.

First, any "obsession" is your own invention. I haven't posted about her in a while, and the last time, there was quite a lot of interest in it.

Second, Trump himself is foremost in the news, as he's wreaking havoc not only in the U.S., but across the world, so naturally Trump-adjacent people are in the news, too. I saw an interesting article, so I shared it.

Third, if you think posters shouldn't post about people they haven't met, then I think you need to be attacking pretty much everyone in the forum on that score.

Fourth, I'm not sure why you imagine that spending a half-hour posting about Melania once a month means I do nothing else.

Fifth, I notice you say nothing to rebut. I mean, if First Ladies were being graded, she'd probably be at the bottom. The main thing she has going for her is that she is the most attractive First Lady in a long time. Well, sure. She was a model. It's not as if she were something useful like a lawyer (Michelle Obama) or a teacher (Laura Bush). She is the least educated of any First Lady in a long time, and although she is reportedly self-conscious about the way she speaks, she never chose to spend any money to remedy that. She could have acquired some interests, but no. In fact, when she chose, as a cause, to combat bullying, she was widely mocked, because she's married to the biggest presidential bully of all time.

This sounds valid to me. Trump is transactional in just about everything. And Melania, in her days as a third-rate model, was originally probably a version of a gold-digger.

I'm not sure, though, how exactly Trump would be "scared" of her. Scared because it would look bad if she walked out on him? Scared that she might spill some secrets? Scared because he has financial things hidden under her name?

You could say she is taking a feminist approach to the role of First Lady, in that she's refusing to appear as an appendage to her husband, and refusing to get stuck in to policy when she's not elected, qualified or confirmed. (Yes that's slightly tongue in cheek).

Everything she did was criticised last time so I can imagine she's decided not to bother, basically. I mean, I thought she struck exactly the wrong note most of the time back then, but presumably she was trying her best, and if she got nowhere with that, why do it?

cramptramp · 18/05/2025 22:30

I like her for the very reason she seems to do her own thing, doesn’t trail after him, and she can wear really high pointy heels without wobbling or falling over.

As far as I know having a very well educated wife who adores you and does loads for charidee isn't a prerequisite to be POTUS.
I don't understand why people like to have so many digs at MT. She isn't being paid to be FLOTUS and probably doesn't want the title.
I don't blame her tbh. It sounds like a lot of work for little payback other than mocking and criticism.

The same could be said of any regular poster so please don’t come on threads that don’t interest you just to single out the poster.

You have time for that.

Edited for typos.

It's a long-established thing in the US system, the First Spouse has their own office, staff, projects etc.

The Starmer comparison is irrelevant, different country different system different customs.

But presumably the FL only has her own office, staff, projects etc if she wants it because it is after all a voluntary position.

It sounds like my worst nightmare, a voluntary public servant position where everyone in the country feels entitled to publicly criticise you, your clothes, your marriage, your children etc.

I don't blame ML for ducking out. I would too.

Sorry, here I thought I was quite clear as to why people make unkind remarks about Melania. She's uneducated, has done nothing to improve herself, has not had any admirable career, seems indifferent to the public, hasn't exerted herself in any way other than in decoration, and is generally considered a gold-digger. And doesn't seem to much care for her husband, either.

Technically, you have a point. Except the Bushes were a political family. So were the Kennedys. The difference is that the Trumps seem only characterized by self-aggrandizement and greed.

You seem to have the measure of someone I presume you've never met. She's married to a colossal cunt so I'm not surprised she doesn't want to be around him.

If Americans want the first lady to be an educated career woman, they shouldn't have voted for that festering pustule because they knew what they were getting. She's never pretended to be anything she's not.

It's something we don't have over here but in the US they have more of a Dynasty way of doing things ie it's a family affair

If by dynasty you mean generational nepotism above political skill to maintain family political influence I agree - the Kennedys and the Bushes spring to mind.

However, because MN is a largely UK based site there just aren't that many people in the UK who are interested in Melania Trump or have any sort of opinion on her.
