…… what do we do now?

Because hopefully with all these trade deals it may get better, that is if Trump does not fuck up the whole of the world’s economy and cause a global sovereign debt crisis.

footpath · 19/05/2025 17:22

I can think of all sorts of reasons, presumably the fact 99.5% are still here then they can to?

Goldenbear · 19/05/2025 17:37

Jackrussellsaremad · 19/05/2025 17:17

Why would you stay in Starmers Britain if you could leave?

I don't know, family, culture, familiarity because you are a British citizen...that said, I have Danish family so I don't think the wealthy in the UK pay much Tax in comparison.

We won't know for a few years as to how many have left and the impact on the rest of us re taxation.

I did originally type out "if you don't have family here" but them thought that was obvious. I mainly mean the non doms. The big tax payers who will have a disproportionate impact if they leave. Apparently significant capital flight is very real. And I don't blame them.

footpath · 19/05/2025 17:49

We won't know as you say so I'm not going to stress about it. Who knows what the global economy will look like then!

But that also depends on who carries out the research, is it objective with no vested interests.

It will become clear eventually through HMRC.

Oh you mean the ones where multi millions, billions is never enough!

No. I don't have any ideological objection to people who pay hefty amounts of tax in this country. I'm not a fool.

Unfortunately because RR has given taxation of trusts retrospective effect the non doms are off. Apparently income tax will rise in due course by 2p in the £ to fill the gap they leave. Great.

Why don't you blame them, they are not exactly victims are they unless one can be a victim of a money addiction. It isn't very progressive is it, the tiny few have excessive amounts, will continue to do so, whilst at the other end it is Dickensian style living! Why do we want a Mumbai like scenario, I'd rather have what my family have in Denmark in terms of welfare system and progressive tax.

For society to function fairly it isn't sustainable though, it is regressive and we should question how this is happened as in the past wealthy people existed but wealth inequality was nothing like today.

Unfortunately we live in a country which is attached to a health service.

Scandinavian countries are a lot nicer and better run with a lot less people to support in my experience.

And being called "progressive" is just a soundbite. It's meaningless. Reducing the number of tax payers, reducing the tax intake and therefore reducing the amount of money we have in tax is hardly "progress".

Denmark have progressive tax system, it is not a "soundbite".

Taxes were always going to have to go up though. We are broke

One big reason for that is that RR has unfortunately instigated quite a few policies that, rather than raise money, will cost the country rather a lot of money. Scaring off high value tax payers being one of them.

Why do you think they are better run- because they are not at the mercy of taxes from the incredibly wealthy, social equality is key for the collective good, those principles are paramount for what you perceive as 'better run'.

Araminta1003 · 19/05/2025 18:32

Actually I have full respect for non doms going back to eg India for Indian generated income- I think they need it more there. Why anyone would want to hand it all over here when it was generated there and into death, to a country that colonialised you previously, that’s just HMRC and the Brits being greedy.

Well so do we. We have tax bands last time I looked.

Anyway RR tax system is not working. So if that's what you call progressive then it's meaningless.

I don't know about Denmark but the hugely wealthy Scandinavian country that I do know about is better run due to its very low population and rich natural resources. You can't achieve that in the UK with nearly 70 million population, a vast and ever increasing state and the rich moving out in droves. It's bound to be rubbish.

BIossomtoes · 18/05/2025 20:08

The IHT threshold hasn’t gone up for 16 years @taxguru. It’s not governments encouraging people to reduce their hours and stuff their pensions to avoid paying tax. It’s human greed and people who are never satisfied that they have enough.

The residence nil rate band was introduced in 2017 effectively raising the threshold for those with their own homes being passed on to their children in their wills.

The main exemption may not have changed for a while, but other exemptions have been brought in.

GlobeTrotter2000 · 19/05/2025 18:38

@footpath

where are you going to?

Bulgaria. Had ties there since 2003.

Not too big a country. Black Sea in summer and the ski slopes in winter are all in driving distance.

Tax is a flat rate of 10%. Before they became an EU member it was 30%. I guess being a net taker (for each Euro they give to the EU, they get three back) helped them to do that.

I thought they amd their wealth were going to Italy and Dubai due to their alluring tax regime.

GlobeTrotter2000 · 19/05/2025 08:31

@Jackrussellsaremad

I think the issue is the proportion of people who contribute the most tax is decreasing rapidly.
Last year alone, London lost 11,300 dollar millionaires (only surpassed by Moscow)

This time next year, there will be one more - myself.

Paying tax is not my issue, but it’s what the government chooses to spend it on. Silly projects like HS2. Billions on track and trace app.

5 billion per year for asylum and hotels for people arriving from outside the UK whilst there are UK citizens on the streets.

lol - Tory policies and inherited from the Tories. Buh bye - don’t let the door hit your ass on the way out.

Nail on the head. She's not actually done anything to help grow the economy - just a handful of measures to damage it. Quite impressive really!
