Changes to immigration rules announced by Starmer

OneAmberFinch · 12/05/2025 14:27

Full white paper here is extensive and announces changes to all avenues of migration - basically their approach to resolving the issues of massively increased migration from 2019-2023/4.

https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/6821aec3f16c0654b19060ac/restoring-control-over-the-immigration-system-white-paper.pdf

And Starmer's commentary on the BBC: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/ce810e3z6dkt

Handful of headline changes: default timeline to get ILR to go to 10 years instead of 5; abolishing new care worker visas; raising skills threshold for Skilled Workers back up to graduate level; increasing minimum grades required for student visas; various bits and pieces around English language requirements among several other policies

Those who care about Social Care and the NHS won't vote Reform

That claim is in the pp so let them know instead.

If you’re unhappy with the care worker situation that’s Starmer not @1dayatatime

Who can honestly put their hand on their heart and say either are working? They are in a dire situation and in terminal decline. It’s about to get worse. Some patients are now being put into prison because they don’t have adequate social care - how is that a humane way to treat vulnerable patients? It’s in an absolute life endangering mess, and no major party have been courageous enough to deal with it.

The maths tells us it’s unsustainable we don’t need Nige to tell us that!!

I think you voted for reform lite in the last election according to the PM’s own speech yesterday.

How did it feel to know we are strangers in our own land? How does it feel to know now Labour haven’t got the magic money tree you promised us all Duncin, rather dishonestly.

I honestly don’t know how you have the sheer gall to come on here tbh.

EasternStandard · 13/05/2025 15:05

Digdongdoo · 13/05/2025 14:43

Collateral damage so we all learn our lesson and vote reform probably.

Here you go @DuncinToffee

I am an immigrant and I thought his rhetoric was awful

I never once said Labour had a magic money tree, Tory voters did though

Have we been on threads together before?

Did they when?

Can you give an example. Pre GE it was all Labour lot going on about his great they’d be. The pp has a point.

You and a handful of others were promising the world before the election, if only we would all vote for Labour and all would come good, and you haven’t even got the decency now to hold your hands up and admit this Labour government has failed.

It’s failed absolutely everyone!

Which is quite an achievement in itself. Most parties wish to at least try and keep their core voters on side.

Now we are seeing a mass defection to Reform, and Starmer has thrown the last of his supporters (and indeed minorities) under the proverbial bus - it just beggars belief. Even I am shocked and I knew Starmer would be terrible, was expecting an epic disaster but he has surpassed himself. Maybe he is trying to be sacked or has had a breakdown of some description??

There was a fair amount of that. Oh well he’s failing now. Hopefully gone at next GE.

I don’t think even Reform would dare to say the island of strangers comment nor the consequent comments about abuse - it really was jaw dropping.

I can see why you might be distancing yourself from your earlier position of Labour die hard given the new vista looks distinctly different from the opulent green fields of prosperity you were referring to pre election.

It’s all gone to shit so very quickly.

nearlylovemyusername · 13/05/2025 15:31

1dayatatime · 13/05/2025 13:46

@DuncinToffee

"That are sectors with high vacancy levels. How do you propose they fill those?"

By the same way every employer in a free market fills high vacancy levels - higher wages, better working conditions and better training.

Emydon't get to avoid this by importing cheap labour and then passing the benefit cost of 9 million economically inactive UK nationals on to the taxpayers.

I agree, but how do you make 25% of working age population who are economically inactive to join labour market and actually make an effort to work? The moment government start talking about benefits review the public shouts about cruelty etc

I will bow out now as it is getting far too personal and I don't have the advantage of knowing your previous usernames.

One has to be a special kind of person to make that judgement just 9 months in... it took 14 years to wreck the UK, Govt moves at a glacial pace.

e.g takes 3 years plus to train a nurse, yet Starmer is expected to solve NHS waiting lists inside of 9 months.

Same with education and their staff shortages or the justice system or road mtce or defence.

Plus may have passed you by but the country has no money, can't borrow and few can afford extra taxes.

Vote Reform or Con or LD or Pepper Pig, no Govt can put the country right in the time scales you and others want.

EasternStandard · 13/05/2025 15:43

It is an incredible decline in support in a short time. They have managed that.

Yes but junior doctors trained here are being sidelined for overseas doctors.

Even if we employed UK trained Junior Dr's it wont solve the NHS issues we have, which is one of ever increasing demand.

Overseas are employed primarily because of experience.

Btw i don't agree with that but its been gong on long before Labour got into power.

A lot of overseas doctors do not have a lot of the exams(college memberships etc) that UK doctors have but that is for another thread. We need to employ our own highly qualified doctors first so that they don't have to move overseas!

Overseas are employed primarily because of experience.

Not true.

Feetinthegrass · 13/05/2025 16:03

We have an incredibly high number of students capable of studying medicine however, and nowhere near enough places. Perhaps we could start there?

I know that a lot of Uk doctors get experience outside of the UK because they get exactly that… experience.

I don’t live in the UK and there are a number of British doctors here in our hospitals getting experience that they wouldn’t in a UK hospital. A lot of it is trauma based which is possibly a good reflection on the UK that you don’t necessarily get the same on the job experience in the UK. But I guess my point is that a lot of those non British doctors you are moaning about have a lot of good experience!
