Councils now run by Reform - end of the beginning or beginning of the end?

So after 1st May Local Elections Reform have outright control of ten top tier Councils, and are the largest, or close to the largest party, in a number of others.

How will they get on do we think? Suddenly having responsibility and accountability for real stuff.

Just for a bit of context the recent National Audit Office report on Local Government in England.
https://www.nao.org.uk/reports/local-government-financial-sustainability-2025/?nab=2

These are the Councils they won outright. Number of seats they won and total seats on each Council, plus a link to the more detailed results. Some of the Councils have really good info sets with clear summaries and maps showing who won where. Others are a bit more basic. These councils deliver services for some 8 million people

There are then 4 Councils where they are the largest party but short of a majority. Will Cons, or others, support them in any of these to give control? Or will others, incl Cons, coalesce to prevent that? We'll soon find out. If anyone knows already post away!

Cornwall 28/87. Cons have 7 seats so even combined well short of a majority. Lib Dems won 26 seats. I think more likely that Lib Dems will get support from sufficient Independents (19), Green (3) and Lab (4) to form an adminstration.
Cornwall Results

Leicestershire 25/55, so 3 short. Cons have 15 seats. So could easily support a Reform led adminstration. Or would they join with Lib Dems (11), Lab (2), Green (1) and Indie (1) to create a coalition administration that keeps Reform out?
Leicestershire Results

Warwickshire 23/57 so 5 short, Cons then have 9 seats, so could support to provide a majority. Lib Dems 14, Greens 7, Lab 3, Indie 1 - combined 25 so again short of a majority, Which way will Cons go?
Warwickshire Results

Worcestershire 27/57 so 2 short. Cons then have 12 seats, so could support to provide a majority. Or could join with the Greens (8), Lib Dems (6), Lab (2) and Indie (2) to thwart a Reform led Council. Equally only needs 2 of the 12 Cons to side with Reform to give them a majority and control though
Worcestshire Results

Of the remaining hung councils:

Northumberland Cons won 26/69, then Reform with 23, So the two combined have a comfortable majority, Or would the Cons look for support from 9 from Lab (8) Indie (7) Lib Dem (3) and Green (2) and avoid Reform. Northumberland Results

Buckinghamshire. Cons have 48/97 so 1 short of a majority. Reform only have 3 seats, but Cons only need support of 1. Equaly 1 of the 13 independents may provide that support. Buckinghamshire Results

In the others Devon, Gloucestershire and Hertfordshire support from Lab and Greens would give the Lib Dems control in each.
Hertfordshire Results
Gloucestshire Results
Devon Results

Lastly Wiltshire all down it seems to the Indies (7). Lib Dems have 43/98. Cons have 37 seats and Reform 10. Wiltshire Results

The final 3 Councils contested last Thursday all delivered Lib Dem majorities - Cambridgeshire, Oxfordshire and Shropshire

Reform councillor Barry Martin quits after saying role was 'dull and boring' - BBC News https://share.google/nJC8qgMxSzxhSic4X

He’s been commenting on Facebook news posts about this and sounds utterly unhinged.

The Ukrainian flag has been removed from outside Essex County Council's offices by the new Reform UK administration. Farage has backed the action.

Council leader Peter Harris said it was a "proud moment"

A councillor has resigned 10 days after winning a seat in the local elections because her "business commitments have expanded rapidly".
Reform UK's Danielle Cavanagh won one of three seats in the High Fell ward of Gateshead Council from Labour in the local elections on 7 May.

Aren’t any of them (Green or Reform) embarrassed? All their friends, neighbours, business acquaintances will know they’ve stood down, it hardly fills one with confidence.

boys3 · 19/05/2026 21:08

I know we had a fair number after the 2025 locals, but the aftermath this time seems to be on another scale completely - and it’s not even two weeks since elections.

And it's not like they didn't have last year to learn from.

This woman was elected in my dad's ward (he didn't vote for her or any Reform candidates but they won all three), I saw this morning and sent a screenshot to my dad. When I got up there at lunchtime a letter had been posted to all residents (obviously a few days ago) regarding her stepping down. 8

I am appalled and hope she is totally ashamed of herself but am pretty sure that won't be the case. I imagine further fellow elected candidates will follow. They bleat on about the Labour council which had been in situ for decades and social media folk are all "they can't be worse than the last lot". They may not be hugely different in terms of outcomes for the council and residents but at least other councillors past and present understood the serious responsibility they were taking on, that you can't conduct a term as a councillor shouting about hotels and boats and with no understanding of the actual responsibility and responsibilities you will hold. It's really pathetic and the stuff about her business growing is rubbish, well maybe her business has grown but... so what? Nobody even knows who she is as she has never campaigned or doorstepped or even been photographed 🤣 I'd think she didn't exist but apparently her mam is another Reform candidate, they obviously saw a nice little family side hustle opportunity but when the chips were down and work required it didn't seem quite so appealing. Sorry for the random rambling about it, it's sad and anger-inducing and the blind leading the blind (that's a kind way of putting it).

Going to protest against ours today - one suspended by Reform already, but not clear if he may go to council meeting, one switched to independent- 11 to go then!

Calderdale

At the first full council meeting since the historic local elections in May, the ruling Reform group voted in favour of reducing the number of scrutiny panels from four down to one.

Looking at the county council where I am and the nearest large unitary council they have 7 and 5 scrutiny panels - though covering the same broad topics. The county has Adult and Children’s as separate panels, whereas these are covered by one in the large unitary.

Four seems at the lower end, and just having one……well we might as well just pack up now.

Good luck if you live in Calderdale😕

Durham, with about half a million residents, still has 6. They all do different jobs.

A Reform UK councillor who vowed to try and address anti-social behaviour and "people feeling unsafe" during her campaign was convicted of assault four months before the local elections.
Bouncer Emma Beck, 47, was found guilty of assault by beating after shoving a woman in her 60s to the floor while working the doors at a bar in St Helens, Merseyside.
Details of the conviction were not aired during the campaign, which saw Beck elected to represent the Thatto Heath ward on St Helens Council.

They are in charge of our council which is Calderdale and have already abolished the scrutiny boards, picked their own far right Mayor rather than sticking with tradition which means it should have been Labours turn (conservative last time) and have sacked the independent chair of the standards committee. It’s scary times especially for Muslims.
