Councils now run by Reform - end of the beginning or beginning of the end?

boys3 · 05/05/2025 21:31

So after 1st May Local Elections Reform have outright control of ten top tier Councils, and are the largest, or close to the largest party, in a number of others.

How will they get on do we think? Suddenly having responsibility and accountability for real stuff.

Just for a bit of context the recent National Audit Office report on Local Government in England.
https://www.nao.org.uk/reports/local-government-financial-sustainability-2025/?nab=2

These are the Councils they won outright. Number of seats they won and total seats on each Council, plus a link to the more detailed results. Some of the Councils have really good info sets with clear summaries and maps showing who won where. Others are a bit more basic. These councils deliver services for some 8 million people

There are then 4 Councils where they are the largest party but short of a majority. Will Cons, or others, support them in any of these to give control? Or will others, incl Cons, coalesce to prevent that? We'll soon find out. If anyone knows already post away!

Cornwall 28/87. Cons have 7 seats so even combined well short of a majority. Lib Dems won 26 seats. I think more likely that Lib Dems will get support from sufficient Independents (19), Green (3) and Lab (4) to form an adminstration.
Cornwall Results

Leicestershire 25/55, so 3 short. Cons have 15 seats. So could easily support a Reform led adminstration. Or would they join with Lib Dems (11), Lab (2), Green (1) and Indie (1) to create a coalition administration that keeps Reform out?
Leicestershire Results

Warwickshire 23/57 so 5 short, Cons then have 9 seats, so could support to provide a majority. Lib Dems 14, Greens 7, Lab 3, Indie 1 - combined 25 so again short of a majority, Which way will Cons go?
Warwickshire Results

Worcestershire 27/57 so 2 short. Cons then have 12 seats, so could support to provide a majority. Or could join with the Greens (8), Lib Dems (6), Lab (2) and Indie (2) to thwart a Reform led Council. Equally only needs 2 of the 12 Cons to side with Reform to give them a majority and control though
Worcestshire Results

Of the remaining hung councils:

Northumberland Cons won 26/69, then Reform with 23, So the two combined have a comfortable majority, Or would the Cons look for support from 9 from Lab (8) Indie (7) Lib Dem (3) and Green (2) and avoid Reform. Northumberland Results

Buckinghamshire. Cons have 48/97 so 1 short of a majority. Reform only have 3 seats, but Cons only need support of 1. Equaly 1 of the 13 independents may provide that support. Buckinghamshire Results

In the others Devon, Gloucestershire and Hertfordshire support from Lab and Greens would give the Lib Dems control in each.
Hertfordshire Results
Gloucestshire Results
Devon Results

Lastly Wiltshire all down it seems to the Indies (7). Lib Dems have 43/98. Cons have 37 seats and Reform 10. Wiltshire Results

The final 3 Councils contested last Thursday all delivered Lib Dem majorities - Cambridgeshire, Oxfordshire and Shropshire

Thanks @DuncinToffee- so many councillors to make us proud already! I ought to find a link but one of our local Reform newbies called those who build the Olympiastadion ‘real visionaries’ and self describes as an ethno nationalist- I’m just glad he’s not in my ward.

Another on in Sunderland, Glenn Gibbins who said Nigerians should be melted down to ‘fill in the pot holes’ has won a seat.

Oh wow - so I can accept there are some nasty, racist scummy people in the world - but then 1000s of folk are voting for them and that’s so hard and depressing to believe - who are we now?

DuncinToffee · 09/05/2026 19:15

Voters might not have been aware who exactly they voted for.

boys3 · 09/05/2026 20:00

Their vetting seems to perhaps be in need of further work - something of an understatement. We’ll likely find similarly unacceptable comments made by some elected on the other side of the populist coin. The success of the two populist parties highlights the scale of disillusionment.

Clearly last year it was the end of the beginning for Reform, with the same now likely true for the Green’s successes last Thursday.

we’ll no doubt have another glut of by elections being required over the coming months.

You'd think they would have smoothed out the wrinkles in the past year. Looks like they are still signing up randoms in the pubs and WMCs.

The greens in Newcastle expelled couple of their candidates with a less than lovely social media presence, before the election. No idea if they got voted in, anyhow.

DuncinToffee · 09/05/2026 20:24

I agree that all parties have problems with racism/anti semitism/islamophobia but not to the scale of Reform and they are working hard to counter it.

Shayne Pooley, the chairman of Reform UK in Ipswich, has publicly stated that the party's new councillors will not be speaking to the media, just hours after Reform won 10 of 16 seats on the borough council and took majority control of the county council.

Looks like we may have our first by- election requirement.

Scroll down a few paragraphs in the article.

This is a Green but likely plenty of paper candidates so expect to see some Reform ones as well.

We had this similarly last time - a Reform councillor already worked for the council, which isn’t allowed, or at least he had to resign, but hadn’t realised apparently.

Baffles me that candidates can’t read the rules around the job they are standing for - worries me considering councils are run on checking rules and red tape too.

boys3 · 10/05/2026 10:06

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2026/may/09/tyrone-scott-hackney-council-greens-paper-candidate

it seems more than a few standing in seats with no expectation of winning. The Greens have done exceptionally well (understatement) in a number of London Boroughs, and quite possibly exceeded their expectations. Likewise Reform in many very traditional always been Labour heartlands.

Given the numbers more of the latter party most likely I’d expect to have problems with unexpected election wins.

‘I’ll talk to work on Monday’: what happens when a ‘paper candidate’ actually wins?

They should be able to fine candidates that do this for wasting public funds!

As well as fine the parties for the candidates they field knowing they don't want to take up a position, if elected.

boys3 · 11/05/2026 10:48

If a political party had to meet the cost of any by-election caused due to this that might focus their minds.

It will be interesting to keep a record of all these. I don't imagine this will be the only one.

MsJinks · 11/05/2026 18:13

My city had 1/3 seats up for grabs and Lib Dem held just a low amount and Labour 1 I think - others went Green or Reform. Now someone is annoyed as if it had been a full seat election they believe Reform would’ve won (I don’t based on knowledge of areas) but as it is current Labour councillors will hook up with Green - they think, don’t know yet - when actually it’s Reform should be running it. Woulda, coulda, shouldas holding some weight there and showing a concerning lack of understanding- sigh.

https://www.markpack.org.uk/176783/how-many-councillors-has-reform-uk-lost-since-the-may-2026-elections/

73 on the initial listing, though 55 looks still to be Councillors just under a different banner and quite often now badged as an “independent”.

based on that ratio maybe c200 drop outs (maybe 75% of those party shifting) from last weeks results.

or maybe more.

How many councillors has Reform UK lost since the May 2026 elections?

A list of all the Reform local authority councillors elected on or after 7 May 2026 who the party has already shed.
